Surf hero Laird Hamilton rescues dozens of residents and tourists stranded by Hawaii floodwaters as more than TWO FEET of rain falls

Dozens of people were rescued after floodwaters swept the Hawaiian island of Kauai by legendary surfer Laird Hamilton.

Several homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed after more than 28 inches of rain over the 24-hour period this past weekend.

Residents and tourists alike were left stranded following landsllides or washed out roads.

Among them was the Gwilliam family from Encitas, California. Jamas and Erin Gwilliam and their three children were vacationing in the town of Hanalei in a house along the river when the torrential downpour began.

The family told NBC 7 that they were stranded because the rains were so strong that the nearby roads and surrounding bridge were washed away.
