Syria: No peace talks without Israeli promise to return Golan

Syrian President Bashar Assad said he would begin peace talks with Israel only after Netanyahu "guarantees the full return of land and rights," the Syrian News Service reported.

Assad met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris where they spoke about the future of peace talks between Israel and Syria, reported the Syrian News Service.

Sarkozy told Assad that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wanted to start talks with Syria with no preconditions.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Golan Talks Fail,We’ll Turn To Resistance

Syrian President Bashar Assad warned on Monday that if the Golan Heights are not returned peacefully – Syria will turn to resistance. Speaking at an economic forum of the Organization of Islamic Conference in Istanbul, Assad said, “The failure of negotiations towards the full restoration of rights automatically means resistance is the alternative solution.”

According to Assad, “Resisting the occupation is a national duty. It is our legitimate and moral obligation to support it, and it is an honor that we take pride in. This does not contradict the constant desire to achieve a just and inclusive peace on the basis of the restoration of the occupied lands, starting with the occupied Syrian Golan.”

Syria Gives Israel The ‘Diplomatic’ Finger

Advisers to Turkey’s prime minister have said that Syria would accept only their country as a mediator in peace talks with Israel, after Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu recently voiced doubts that Ankara could continue in the role.

Following a crisis in relations between Israel and Turkey last week, Netanyahu said he objects to Turkey resuming its role as mediator and does not see how the country can remain “an honest broker.”

They said neither the Syrians nor the Turks are of the belief that Israel is interested in advancing peace talks with Syria, given Netanyahu’s public refusal to relinquish the occupied Golan Heights, a key Syrian demand.

Israel obstacle to nuke-free Mideast, says Syria

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem urges Israel to yield to the demands pressed by the UN nuclear watchdog and open its nuclear sites to inspection.

The Syrian diplomat said on Monday that the Israeli regime must place all its nuclear installations under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, and adhere to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

ISRAEL DETERMINED TO PROVOKE SOMEONE IN ORDER TO KICK-START A REGIME CHANGING WAR AGAINST IRAN.

Israel seems determined to provoke its enemies hook or by crook in order to get a war going against Iran. If they’re not continually directly accusing Iran of having a nuclear weapons program – despite the total lack of any evidence to even suggest Iran has any nuclear weapons program – then Israel is accusing Hezbollah of wanting to attack Israelis and Israeli interests outside of Israel warning that, if any Israeli is harmed, Hezbollah will be held responsible. Just to help the provocation along, Israel is also still sending their military jets into sovereign Lebanese airspace. In their latest piece of warmongering chutzpah, Israel is accusing Hezbollah of stockpiling rockets in order to strike Israel.

Russia set to build up its naval facilities in Syria

The Russian Navy will expand and modernize its Soviet-era naval maintenance site near Tartus in Syria to support anti-piracy operations off the Somali coast, a high-ranking navy source said on Monday.

The Navy maintenance site near Tartus is the only Russian foothold in the Mediterranean. Russian navy commanders have long been calling for the expansion and modernization of the Tartus base.

FLASHBACK - Trish Schuh: The Salvador Option in Beirut

Unlike Iraq, there is no “weapons of mass destruction threat” to facilitate toppling the Syrian regime. This time, a United Nations Tribunal could provide the means, deploying Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri's murder as the weapon. But like the US show trial to convict Saddam Hussein, the show trial to convict Syria for Hariri's murder, built by the United Nation's International Independent Investigation Commission (UNIIIC), has a history of problems.

Israel, ElBaradei Trade Condemnations Over Syria Investigation

Israeli Ambassador Israel Michaeli publicly chastised International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Muhamed ElBaradei today for what he called “political bias” in his investigation of Israeli accusations of Syrian activity. Michaeli added that if ElBaradei wanted Israeli cooperation he should “refrain from publicly lashing at Israel.”

ElBaradei angrily denied the accusation of bias, adding that international law applies to every nation and that the 2007 Israeli attack on the alleged Syrian facility was “not only making it almost impossible for us to establish the facts, but it was a clear violation of international law.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Apparently, for Ambassador Michaeli, "lashing out" means telling the honest truth

You've gotta love El Baradei for his dedication to what must be an exhausting and thankless task.

U.S. to send military team to Syria

In a sign of improving relations between Washington and Damascus, the United States is sending a military delegation to Syria in the coming weeks to discuss Iraq, U.S. and Syrian officials said on Wednesday.

Separately, the Obama administration's Middle East envoy George Mitchell will go to Damascus, possibly next week, to assess whether the time is right to revive talks between Israel and Syria, a U.S. official said.

Israel has begun its largest-ever defence drill, testing the response of its emergency services to a "doomsday scenario" of missile attacks, bombings and natural disasters.

The five-day national exercise got under way on Sunday, with defence officials playing down any connection to recent and growing tensions with Iran.

The drill simulates simultaneous rocket strikes from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon and missile attacks from Iran and Syria.

It will test the way rescue services deal with attacks, including conventional, chemical and biological strikes against large population centres.

Deputy FM: Assad just wants peace process, not peace

Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon said Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad was only interested in conducting a peace process with Israel, instead of actually reaching a peace accord.

"The Syrian President fully realizes that the price of peace would be opening up to the West, which is a threat to the stability of his regime," said Ayalon during a lecture in Be'er Sheva.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Syria's alliance with Iran has been due to self-preservation, and a serious sense that the US and Israel cannot be trusted to keep their word.

And the really interesting "kicker" in the equation is the very real possibility that next month's election in Lebanon may well see Shiite Hezbollah candidates increase their influence in Lebanon's government, extending both Iran and Syria's regional sphere of influence.

If there is a sincere desire for peace in the region, both Israel - and the US - will need to offer far more carrots than sticks to Syria to begin any kind of serious rapprochement here.

The Death of Rendition Victim Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi

From Libya comes news of the death of Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, a former “ghost prisoner” of the United States, whose false confession about a connection between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein — extracted under torture in Egypt — was used to justify the invasion of Iraq. The news will only add to the woes of the senior Bush administration officials who conceived the program of “extraordinary rendition” and torture within days of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and then, in a netherworld of secret memoranda, sought legal justification for their actions.

Israel ignoring 65 UN resolutions

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559 was created because of an Israeli false flag. It called on Syrian troops to be removed from Lebanon after a vicious car bombing which killed the former prime minister of Lebanon Rafik al-Hariri. This was blamed on Syria, later because of a lack of evidence the blame was shifted to a Palestinian however UN investigations cleared the suspect of being capable of the attack and later it was discovered that Israeli agents were responsible for the attacks. The result was a call by the UN to remove Syria's troops from Lebanon something Israel desperately wanted. Bush even goofed up admitting this accidentally while having lunch with Tony Blair and speaking into a mic he didn't know was still on.

Unnamed US officials said the attack had targeted and killed a “smuggler of foreign fighters into Iraq” and said they didn’t kill any of the women and children found at the attacked site. Report: Bush offers swift Golan withdrawal

US President George W. Bush suggested to Syrian President Bashar Assad that Israel would withdraw from the Golan Heights in exchange for a complete disbandment of the Syrian-Iranian alliance, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida reported Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

(Ahem).

Memo to the White House and US State Department; the last time I checked, it is Israel which is currently in control of the Golan Heights.

The US has absolutely no control here.

And one has to wonder; did Bush and his minions happen to mention anything to the folks at the top of the Israeli political food-chain, who are this very moment scrambling for supremacy in either the coalition Livni is struggling to achieve, or in the general elections which will happen if the coalition is not achieved by the deadline?

My guess would be that this absolutely hasn't happened.

Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad is many things, but he is no idiot. In fact, he appears to be a smart human being.

He and the Syrian government will recognise this for precisely what it is; a promise the US can't keep, because it's not the US's promise to make, should such a deal be struck. It is Israel which must make this promise for such a deal to even be considered.

Partial results of samples from a Syrian site bombed by Israel show nothing to back up US assertions that the target was a secret nuclear reactor, diplomats said Saturday.

Syrian Tripwire For WWIII

The Russians are making clear their intentions of using the large Russian naval presence in Tartus as a deterrent to Israeli air strikes against Syria using the powerful anti-air missiles on-board the Russian naval warships. These missile systems can sweep the sky over most of Syria and knock down Israeli F-15 and F-16 fighters. This changes the balance of power in the air over Syria.

Syrian commandos invade seven N. Lebanese villages outside Tripoli

It is the largest Syrian force to invade Lebanon since Damascus was forced to end its occupation of the country in May 2005, three months after former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri was assassinated.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Syria took the blame for Hariri's assassination, and it was the political fallout from that murder that forced Syria to leave Lebanon. Of course, this is what cleared the way for Israel to send two soldiers over the border into Lebanon, call their subsequent capture a kidnapping, and then invade Lebanon, possibly to seize the Litani river as a water supply.

Now that motive is more clearly seen, Syria appears to have decided that they are not going to continue taking the blame for Harari's assassination, and will return to status quo ante.

This will forestall any further plans by Israel to invade Lebanon.

Syrian Leader Highlights Solidarity, Seeks Arms, In Visit To Russia

Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, in Russia on a two-day visit, backed Moscow's military action against Georgia at talks with President Dmitry Medvedev that were expected to cover purchases of Russian arms.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Bush and the Neocons have royally screwed this nation. Their slavish backing of Israel aggressions against other Mideast nations has opened up an opportunity for Russia to move into the region and greatly expand her sphere of influence.

US Foreign Policy regarding Israel has long by justified with the claim that Israel was our only friend in the Mideast, and now that has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. The United States has lost the initiative in the Mideast.
