Mr. Ruml read this paper before the American Bar Association during the last year of the war [World War II]. It attracted then less attention than it deserved and is even more timely now, with the tax structure undergoing change for peacetime. His thesis is that given (1) control of a central banking system and (2) an inconvertible currency, a sovereign national government is finally free of money worries and need no longer levy taxes for the purpose of providing itself with revenue. All taxation, therefore, should be regarded from the point of view of social and economic consequences. The paragraph that embodies this idea will be found italicized in the text. Mr. Ruml does not say precisely how in that case the government would pay its own bills.

Zsa Zsa Gabor Blames Bernie Madoff for $118,321 Tax Bill

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, the IRS filed a lien of more than $118,000 for the years 2001 and 2002 against the 92-year-old actress on Oct. 5 in the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds.

Gabor lawyer Chris Fields estimates that Gabor lost about $7 million in Madoff's Ponzi scheme and the tax bill is part of the fallout. Fields says third-party money managers invested Gabor's money with Madoff.

Husband’s suit faults IRS for wife’s suicide

After reviewing the information, Springmann granted the warrant, and Muschell and a number of armed agents served it on the home shortly after 7 a.m. Nov. 6, 2007, while Denise Simon was getting the couple’s youngest child, 11, ready for school. James Simon was out of the country on business, according to court documents.

Three days later, Denise Simon, a former board member of SCAN and president of the Fort Wayne chapter of the American Red Cross, took her own life.

In her typed suicide note she wrote: "I am truly innocent of any attempt to evade taxes, launder money, commit fraud or the other things I am being accused of … I also have no faith in the legal system or the ability of the government to seek the truth."

Netherlands to levy 'green' road tax by the kilometre

The Dutch government said Friday it wants to introduce a "green" road tax by the kilometre from 2012 aimed at cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 10 percent and halving congestion.

"Each vehicle will be equipped with a GPS device that tracks how many kilometres are driven and when and where. This data will be then be sent to a collection agency that will send out the bill," the transport ministry said in a statement.

Environment boss wants to put carbon tax on driving, heating and holidays

Drivers, households and holidaymakers should be hit with a carbon tax to tackle global warming, the head of the Environment Agency will say today.

Lord Smith, the former culture secretary, wants to see personal carbon allowances for individuals to cut greenhouse gases by penalising people for using too much fuel.

Every time someone used their car, took a flight or turned their central heating on, their personal allowance would go down.

If it hit zero, they would have to pay to get more carbon credits.

I'll take considerable heat for my opinion on this, since the IRS encourages electronic filing, as do many accountants. In fact, the IRS boasts that two out of three 2008 returns were filed electronically. Clearly, electronic filing is the thing of the future and will be required for every return someday soon.

Until then, I suggest filing the old fashioned way, particularly if you're worried about an audit. Why? Paper filing means it's more work for the IRS to access all the information in your return. Your duty as a taxpayer is to be truthful and accurate, but you don't have to make it easy for the IRS.

TIGTA today publicly released its audit report of the IRS's processing of taxpayer requests for copies of tax returns and transcripts.

TIGTA's audit concluded that the IRS needs to strengthen its controls over taxpayer requests for copies of tax returns and transcripts in order to prevent unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information. Tax transcripts provide most of the information contained in a tax return. Taxpayers request copies of their tax returns or transcripts for many reasons -- to obtain a loan to start a business, to buy a home, to attend college or to verify income for child support. In addition, third parties such as financial institutions, insurance companies or universities could also submit requests for tax returns or transcripts to the IRS on behalf of taxpayers.

ALJ Says Billionaire Spent 179 (Not 183) Days in NYC, So Not Subject to NYC Tax

A New York state administrative law judge has ruled that billionaire former hedge fund manager Julian H. Robertson Jr. spent only 179 days in New York City in 2000, not the 183 days alleged by New York tax authorities. As a result, the ALJ ruled that Robertson was not a New York City resident and thus not liable for $47.7 million in New York City income taxes and interest for that year.

The real war is not between the left and the right. It is between the average American and the ruling class. If we come together on this single issue, everything else will resolve itself. It's time we took back our government from those who would make us their slaves.

A general strike is a way for people to express disapproval of and/or discontent with the actions or policies undertaken by their government in their name. An effective way to reassert collective power.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD IDEA.

General strikes in 2009: Greece; France; Italy; South Korea; Puerto Rico. A general strike has also been proposed for the United States (notably adbusters, Mr. Larry Flynt, and strike911.org).

Because nothing will change until we take corporate money out of politics. Nothing will improve until our politicians are once again answerable to their constituents, not the rich and powerful. Let's set a date. No one goes to work. No one buys anything. And if that isn't effective -- if the politicians ignore us -- we do it again. And again. And again.

Chicago Property Taxes Increase 9.6%; Obama's Property Tax Increases 1.0%

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that property taxes in Chicago have increased an average of 9.6% this year. The property taxes on President Obama's home at 5046 South Greenwood Avenue increased 1.0%. Other Chicago politicians with below average property tax increases include:

* Alexi Giannoulias (Illinois Treasurer): 1.0%
* Richard Daley (Chicago Mayor): 3.5%
* Rahm Emanuel (President Obama's Chief of Staff): 3.7%
* Lisa Madigan (Illinois Attorney General): 4.4%
