According to US Senate Intelligence Committee sources, the Bush administration initially green lighted the intended May 11 Israel 'demonstration of solidarity with the pro-Bush administration militias, some with which Israel has maintained ties since the days of Bashir Gemayal and Ariel Sharon.
In the end, 'the Bush administration got cold feet', a Congressional source revealed. So did Israel.
Israel was not willing to proceed with the original Bush Administration idea which was to have Bush attend the May 15 Israel anniversary celebrations following the Israeli attack meant to hit Hezbollah hard, and give Bush the credit for coming to the dangerous region. The message was to be that Bush comes to the rescue 'on horseback and leads the US Calvary charge straight out of a B western movie where the bugle would sound and flag would be unfurled and the white hat good guys would show their stuff before riding into the sunset and back to Texas, leaving the results to the likely Obama administration to sort out.

The announcement from Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer, to increase supplies by 3.3 per cent to 9.45 million barrels per day came during the second trip made by President Bush this year to visit King Abdullah in Riyadh. Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said: "On May 10, we raised supplies to customers by increasing 300,000 barrels per day of oil (output) ... In the future if the need appears, Saudi Arabia has no objection to producing more." Essentially, what the Oil Ministers in Riyadh is saying is that they have alreadydone as much as they can do right now, and did increase their output of oil another 300,000 barrels per day as of 10 May of this year. The problem of the price of oil has infinitely more to do with the dollar's slide in value rather than the production of oil per se, and the Saudis understand this. But it's very obvious, no matter how this paper decides to spin this, that the Saudis can do nothing more at this time. Whatever "pleas" came from the white house in the US had to be before the 10 May date they're talking about here, and not at all as a result of the current meeting between Bush and King Adbullah. - M. And as for those forty-one members of the house who asked Bush to consider an "aid intervention", consider this: after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, when two dozens nations offered immediate aid, their aid was refused by the Bush administration. Both the governments of the US and Myanmar didn't want to be embarrassed internationally by the shocking lack of resources, infrastructure, and preparedness which led to the devastation both Hurricane Katrina and Cyclone Nargis left behind. - M. A group of Democratic senators wants to make a massive arms sale to Saudi Arabia contingent on getting cheaper oil, reports AFP. "We are saying to the Saudis that, if you don't help us, why should we be helping you?" says Chuck Schumer, a Democratic senator from New York. "We are saying that we need real relief, and we need it quickly. You need our arms, but we need you to cooperate and not strangle American consumers."
