BP bets on Kevin Costner's oil cleaning machine

It was treated as an oddball twist in the otherwise wrenching saga of the BP oil spill when Kevin Costner stepped forward to promote a device he said could work wonders in containing the spill's damage. But as Henry Fountain explains in the New York Times, the gadget in question - an oil-separating centrifuge - marks a major breakthrough in spill cleanup technology. And BP, after trial runs with the device, is ordering 32 more of the Costner-endorsed centrifuges to aid the Gulf cleanup.

===

Maybe it will work on some of the oil. But it won't touch the toxic mess they created with Corexit in lower levels of the gulf. That mess is going to be affecting the whole gulf area and more for generations - long after BP has ceased to pay for damages.

Allegations Emerge BP Is Dumping Sand To Cover Oil

C.S.'s original goal was to gain access to some of the areas being guarded by BP contractors and deemed "off limits" to reporters, but yesterday he, along with Save Our Shores's Judson Parker, made an unexpected discovery.

They believe that BP has been dumping sand on the beaches in order to cover up oil.

Allegations Emerge BP Is Dumping Sand To Cover Oil

Yesterday, I contacted a friend of mine, C.S. Muncy, who is a photojournalist currently raising all kinds of hell down in southern Louisiana.

You can view some video Judson shot of the beach over here.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If this is true, why the heck is Obama's administration allowing BP to get away with this?!?!

That means that the toxic legacy of this oil may be left on the Gulf's shores for decades!!

"Are You F_cking Happy? The Rig's On Fire!"

Repost of article by Josh Harkinson for MotherJones

...Tony Buzbee, a lawyer representing 15 rig workers and dozens of shrimpers, seafood restaurants, and dock workers, says he has obtained a three-page signed statement from a crew member on the boat that rescued the burning rig's workers. The sailor, who Buzbee refuses to name for fear of costing him his job, was on the ship's bridge when Deepwater Horizon installation manager Jimmy Harrell, a top employee of rig owner Transocean, was speaking with someone in Houston via satellite phone. Buzbee told Mother Jones that, according to this witness account, Harrell was screaming, "Are you fucking happy? Are you fucking happy? The rig's on fire! I told you this was gonna happen."

Whistle blower to testify on oil spill worst fear:BP deliberately sinks oil with Corexit as cover up

In a shocking interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on June 29th, Allegiance Capitol Corporation V.P. Fred McCallister said that BP is deliberately sinking oil with the toxic chemical disbursant Corexit, to hide the size of the oil spill. By sinking the oil before it can be collected, BP won’t have to pay fines on it.

McCallister said, “Everybody in Europe, where the standard practice is to raise the oil and collect it, is scratching their heads, and quite honestly laughing at what’s happening in the Gulf.” He added, “Everyone is looking at us and wondering why we’re allowing this to happen.”

BP SPILL: IS THE BORE HOLE ERODING?

I am looking at cameras 8 and 9 in this display and it seems pretty obvious that the amount of oil leaking out from the top of the blowout preventer is increasing.

We now know that both the drill pipes and the well casing were destroyed in the original "kick", and debris from the drill pipe blown up into the BOP is what kept the pincher system from working. We knew that the well casing was breached from the failure of the top kill and the seepage coming up from cracks in the surrounding sea floor.

So, it appears that the oil is blasting up through the drilled bore hole without the protection of the drill pipe or the well casing. Inevitably the flow has to be eroding the sides of the bore. Which means the hole is enlarging, slowly, but still enlarging.

'Not Enough Money' for BP Oil Spill Claims

An estimated 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil a day has been gushing out of the ruptured well since the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig sank on April 22 some 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana.

Some 423 miles (681 kilometers) of US shorelines have now been oiled as crude gushes into the sea at an alarming rate, 10 weeks into the worst environmental disaster in US history.

Feinberg, who Obama named to administer the 20-billion-dollar claims fund, insisted that BP will "pay every eligible claim," but cautioned that many perceived damages may not qualify.

"I use that famous example of a restaurant in Boston that says, 'I can't get shrimp from Louisiana, and my menu suffers and my business is off,'" Feinberg told the House of Representatives Committee on Small Business on Wednesday.

Living on a dying delta

In case anyone wasn’t clear about the priorities of the US government, included in Biden’s entourage are BP’s chief operating officer Doug Suttles, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. It was Jindal who, on June 2nd, sent an urgent letter to President Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar regarding his grave concerns at the time of the administration’s decision to place a moratorium on deepwater drilling.

The lead paragraph in that letter made it very clear how Jindal’s concern is not with the ongoing catastrophic loss of ecosystems, or even the fisherpersons of his state, but with placating big oil

A Governor Seals Oil-Spill Records

For more than two months, Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, has made it clear that he considers the federal government and BP’s response to the gulf oil leak a failure on many fronts.

But elected officials in Louisiana and members of the public seeking details on how Mr. Jindal and his administration fared in their own response to the disaster are out of luck: late last week the governor vetoed an amendment to a state bill that would have made public all records from his office related to the oil spill.

In the past an almost double-digit percentage increase in the BP share price would have signalled a spectacular oil strike. It is a measure of the decline in the company's fortunes that such a surge was triggered by hopes of a takeover or break-up.

The company's stock soared 9% to 331p at one point as a growing list of companies from China to Russia were linked with potential mega-mergers that could see the end of independence for what was once Britain's biggest firm.

Department of Energy: Oil Well Drill Pipe Was Violently Ejected Upwards Into the Blowout Preventer

A team of scientists from the Energy Department discovered a new twist: Their sophisticated imaging equipment detected not one but two drill pipes, side by side, inside the wreckage of the well's blowout preventer on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

BP officials said it was impossible. The Deepwater Horizon rig, which drilled the well, used a single pipe, connected in segments, to bore 13,000 feet below the ocean floor. But when workers cut into the wreckage to install a containment cap this month, sure enough, they found two pipes.

The discovery suggested that the force of the erupting petroleum from BP's well on April 20 was so violent that it sent pipe segments hurtling into the blowout preventer, like derailing freight cars.

Obama Wants The Oil Spill Crisis To Get Worse

Why did Obama reject all the help he could get unless the federal government wants the crisis to get worse so it can exploit the hysteria surrounding the issue to push its ultimate goal of imposing a consumption tax on the American people?

How will imposing a carbon tax fix the oil spill? It won’t, but by exploiting the crisis in the name of ‘reducing our dependence on oil’, the government will seek to raise prices, much to the glee of companies like BP who are founding members of the cap and trade lobby. Reducing your dependence on oil means reducing your ability to fill your tank because it will be so much more expensive once the carbon tax is in place.

Florida least affected as oil spill fishing closure now covers about 33% of the Gulf of Mexico

As July quickly approaches the latest fishing closure has expanded to encompass about 33% of the Gulf. The closed fishing area is reduced slightly from the high of 36.6 % that occurred on June 2. The first closure was issued on May 2, 2010 and covered only 2.8 % of the Gulf EEZ.

The press release explains that all vessels must comply with the federal closure but if state waters are not closed federally permitted vessels may fish in those waters. In this case, all state fishing laws must be adhered to.

Top scientist: Only one ship testing methane levels in Gulf, NOAA hiding results; Amount is “just startlingly high”

[UGA marine scientist Samantha Joye] notes “I have read the reports from NOAA and I have yet to see methane measurements.”

She says “the biggest hole [in research on the disaster] is the gas data.” …

Joye says the amount of methane that’s getting into the air is unknown because only one ship is actually doing any measuring of gases in the air.

“BP affirms that it [methane] has seeped into the atmosphere, as if it doesn’t matter,” says Joye. “But it’s a potent greenhouse gas. We don’t have enough data right now.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Nobody is measuring the methane in the atmosphere because you cannot blame that on people and tax them for it. The focus (and measurements) remain on CO2 because the public can be tricked into accepting the blame for it, and paying a carbon tax.

Obama Underwrites Offshore Drilling

You read that headline correctly. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration is financing oil exploration off Brazil.

The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil's Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil's planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obama shuts down our oil and caps our production -- and now signs exec order for US loan of $2 billion for offshore drilling in Brazil in operation that will supply China exclusively

U.S. Export-Import Bank tells us it has issued a "preliminary
commitment" letter

Obama executive order to underwrite offshore drilling to the tune of $2 billion ... in Brazil . (Have we seen that kind of money in the Gulf?)

President Obama is stopping off shore drilling for our country, yet he has now signed an executive order to loan 2 Billion of our taxpayers dollars underwriting a Brazilian Oil Exploration Company (which is the 8th largest company in the entire world) to drill for oil off the coast of Brazil ! The oil that comes from this operation is for the sole purpose and use of China and NOT THE USA ! Now here's the real clincher...the Chinese government is under contract to purchase all the oil that this oil field will produce, which is hundreds of millions of barrels of oil"..

And that is how a slave president of a slave country works off the
debt of its debt slavery. Yet this debt payment does not show up on the books -- it does not pay down our debt.

We have absolutely no gain from this transaction whatsoever!

Wait, it gets more interesting.

Guess who is the largest individual stockholder of this Brazilian Oil Company and who would benefit most from this? It is American
BILLIONAIRE, George Soros, who was one of President Obama's most
generous financial supporter during his campaign.

Bureaucracy Bungling Gulf Oil Spill Cleanup

As crude oil washes over Gulf beaches, the federal bureaucracy is denying use of effective tools to mitigate damage. Sitting in Norfolk, Virginia, a converted oil tanker is awaiting permission to go to the gulf to help clean up the oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon break.

The ship, called the S.S. A-Whale, a giant oil tanker, was built in South Korea, modified in Portugal, is owned by Taiwanese, and flagged in Liberia. Hence its use is stopped by the Jones Act which has yet to be waived to allow foreign ships to help. This ship has the capacity to gather up 500,000 barrels of oil a day from surface waters. To put that in perspective, the current government authorized fleet has taken 70 days to collect 600,000 barrels of oil.

Obama Is Deliberately Protracting Gulf Oil Disaster

* Obama inexplicably and irrationally refused 13 countries’ offers to help.
* The Obama administration is also thwarting Gulf coast states and private citizens from helping.
The unavoidable conclusion is this:
(A) Obama is either grossly incompetent and unfeeling; or
(B) He’s so evil that he’s deliberately protracting and worsening the spill so as to foist on us the Cap ‘n Trade Tax “climate change” bill. Just as ObamaCare is not about health care, so Cap ‘n Tax is not about the climate. It’s all about more power to the already too-big too-powerful government.

Red tape keeps prized oil-fighting skimmers from Gulf, coastline

Chris Kirkham, The Times-Picayune
On the Senate floor last week, Sen. George LeMieux, R-Fla., pointed to a Coast Guard map detailing more than 850 skimmers available in the southeastern United States -- and more than 1,600 available in the continental United States.
"We are literally talking about more than a thousand skimmers that are available, but we only have 400 - if this number is correct -- at work," LeMieux said. Panic brews on Gulf coast under suspicions of oil spill media blackout of threats to public safety

A quiet panic is brewing among residents of Florida’s Gulf coast. People are starved for updates and official information, and the lack of them is accelerating conspiracy theories and rumors of a media blackout. Founded or not, to residents they are quite real.

Unconfirmed reports of evacuations have been circling the internet, along with suggestions that they will never be implemented because the scale is too enormous. Why announce a plan that can’t be carried out? That has led to theories that human life is more expendable than political careers and BP’s public image.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is exactly the situation I warned about ten years ago. Because of all the US Government lies, about Saddam's "nookular" bombs, about the economy, about 9-11, about TWA-800, OK City, Osama Bin Laden, Waco, Israel's attack on the Aid Flotilla, etc. the US Government has a credibility crisis of their own making. SBA declines 70 percent of Louisiana businesses applying for oil spill loans, state complains

In an eerie repeat of difficulties after Hurricane Katrina, the Small Business Administration is turning down more than two-thirds of Louisiana companies seeking Gulf oil spill relief loans, according to a top state official's complaint to the federal agency Thursday.

Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret sent a letter to SBA Administrator Karen Mills complaining that the SBA is using its normal loan approval processes even though the circumstances are extraordinary, and that the agency is turning down far too many Louisiana businesses because of "credit concerns" or because they can't prove they'll be able to repay quickly.

Florida Beaches Reopen: 400 Get Sick

The Escambia County Health Department lifted a health advisory on Pensacola Beach on Friday on the advice of a beach official and against the advice of a federal environmental official....[leaving] the decision to swim in the Gulf of Mexico up to the discretion of individual beachgoers.

The oil impact signs would be posted indefinitely and warn beachgoers that oil has washed up on the beaches. But... would not prohibit people from going swimming... would warn beachgoers to avoid touching oily product on the beach and in the water... would advise them leaving the beach and seeking medical help if they experience respiratory problems.

Truth And Consequences

Imagine you're in a television station newsroom and you've just been given an
assignment. It's about a blowout in an oil well and you have to have it on air tonight.
The story has been rolling for a couple of months, and it's time for a new angle. You instantly
think of something dramatic like "Extinction Level Event." But you know that won't fly.
It stands to reason that television without pictures is like newspapers without print so the first
thing you do is begin visualizing the images you'll need to cover the story.
(Everybody imagines some sort of movie in their mind when they're talking or listening or
reading. So listen up and turn on your inner DVD player as we get to the story about the
future - including several variations on a theme.)

Avertible catastrophe

he Americans, overwhelmed by the catastrophic consequences of the BP spill, finally relented and took the Dutch up on their offer — but only partly. Because the U.S. didn’t want Dutch ships working the Gulf, the U.S. airlifted the Dutch equipment to the Gulf and then retrofitted it to U.S. vessels. And rather than have experienced Dutch crews immediately operate the oil-skimming equipment, to appease labour unions the U.S. postponed the clean-up operation to allow U.S. crews to be trained.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There can be only one characterization of the US government's response to the Dutch offer of help: collectively, catastrophically insane.

No skimmers in sight as oil floods into Mississippi waters

A morning flight over the Mississippi Sound showed long, wide ribbons of orange-colored oil for as far as the eye could see and acres of both heavy and light sheen moving into the Sound between the barrier islands. What was missing was any sign of skimming operations from Horn Island to Pass Christian.

Saturday’s briefing projected oil would be on the beaches of the barrier islands, the Chandeleurs, in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. For Sunday the projection of beached oil showed thicker lines as the bulk of the oil body moved closer.

For Monday the projection was more of the same, except it included a red X at Bay St. Louis, meaning the forecast is oil will reach the mainland there.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Gulf Coast Toxicity Syndrome

While the situation in the Gulf is grim it will soon get a lot grimmer. There are certain chemicals mixed in with the oil that release toxic gases, finding a way to make it up into the air. Many different gases from hydrogen sulfate to benzene are being released into the air at around 4000 times what it considered safe to humans. As a result of this people are going to become gravely ill. People are going to be poisoned and unfortunately some are going to die. We have already seen breathing problems in the Gulf region and now reports are coming in as far away as Atlanta, Georgia.

Reaching too Far, Delving too Deep: The Well from Hell

Some geologists say that BP's arrogance has set off a series of events that may be irreversible. There are some that think that BP has drilled into an deep-core oil volcano that cannot be stopped, regardless of the horizontal drills the company claims will stop the oil plume in August.

Geologist, Chris Landau, for instance, has called for a showing of the mudlogs. A mudlog is a schematic cross sectional drawing of the lithology (rock type) of the well that has been bored.

So far, no one has seen them... BP keeps them hidden.

Toxic Rain Hysteria Fueled by Internet Hoaxer…

It’s worth noting that some of this oily-rain hysteria is fueled by an online article which cites a Russian ministerial report warning that toxic oil-spill rains could “destroy all life” on the North American continent. Crucially, the report states that Corexit — the toxic dispersant BP is using — could undergo “phase transition” and then fall with rain. A paragraph on evaporation is simply cut-n-pasted from Wikipedia without attribution.

The author (Sorcha Faal AKA David Booth) is a well-known disinfo hoaxer, often citing imaginary high-level Russian sources in his fantastical and apocalyptic “analysis.”

Is Toxic Corexit Rain Killing Crops in Mississippi?

Yobie Benjamin, writing for The San Francisco Chronicle, is reporting what nobody else in the corporate media is reporting — a mysterious disease has stricken crops in Mississippi and it may be connected to the BP oil gusher.

“It seems like damage brought by the oil gusher has spread way beyond the ocean, coastal areas and beaches. Collateral damage now appears to include agricultural damage way inland Mississippi,” writes Benjamin. The disease has caused widespread damage to plants from weeds to farmed organic and conventionally grown crops.

Last May 24, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson promised, "We will conduct our own tests to determine the least toxic, most effective dispersant available in the volumes necessary for a crisis of this magnitude... I am not satisfied that BP has done an extensive enough analysis of other dispersant options."

As of today, those tests have not been completed, according to the EPA. In the meantime, BP has dumped 1.4 million gallons of Corexit on the gulf.

t seems like damage brought by the oil gusher has spread way beyond the ocean, coastal areas and beaches. Collateral damage now appears to include agricultural damage way inland Mississippi.

The Coming Gulf Coast Firestorm: How the BP oil catastrophe could destroy a major U.S. city

How the fire happens
So let's say the oil blowout continues, and the Gulf of Mexico is carrying millions of gallons of crude oil as a massive hurricane approaches. It's a hot July day in the Gulf of Mexico, with temperatures soaring towards 110 degrees, accelerating the evaporation of volatile oils which get mixed in with hurricane-force winds.

The hurricane makes landfall in New Orleans, let's say, dumping potentially hundreds of thousands of gallons of what is essentially "volatile fuel" on the city of New Orleans. Now, at first it's just a wet, slippery toxic mess that kills trees and grass. But what happens after the storm when the sun dries out the city?

BP Makes Largest Political Contribution in U.S. History

The fund is a desperate maneuver by BP. Any corporation would look at Obama’s history regarding corporations in crisis and try to preempt the ‘a**-kicking’ effect.

Though too late for BP, there is still a broader hope. Feinberg is encouraging claimants to avoid the civil process and work directly with the BP Escrow Fund. He wants voters to eat out of their hands (sounds familiar), not pursue restitution through the legal process. What can you do? Don’t take their money.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Some Gulf families and businesses absolutely do not have the time it would take to pursue their claims through the court systemwithout getting totally ruined financially, if they are not already there at this point.

What the US government should have done was to have had the inspections and "best safe practices" in place to have prevented this disaster, and in this respect, have failed the people who have been effected miserably.

USF scientists find long line of oil 6 inches under the sand at Pensacola Beach

PENSACOLA BEACH — The sugar-sand beach here appeared cleaner Thursday, after workers picked up tar balls overnight with shovels and nets. By noon they had collected 44,955 pounds of tar balls and oil material, according to the Escambia County Emergency Operations Center.

But a University of South Florida geologist made a grim discovery Thursday morning, 24 hours after the worst oil onslaught in Florida so far.

Ping Wang, 43, who has studied beaches for 20 years, dug a narrow trench perpendicular to the shoreline, about a foot deep and 5 feet long. A dark, contiguous vein of oil ran horizontally along the walls of the trench, about 6 inches beneath the surface of the sand.

We all live in an oil slick now

Extracting oil from the ground has always been disastrous for the people who live nearby. The only thing that is unusual about this morphing of "Drill, Baby, Drill" into "Spill, Baby, Spill" is that, this time, the world noticed the victims. To pluck one random example, in Ecuador the petrol companies have to pump water into the Amazonian oil fields in order to extract it. This leaves behind a toxic soup of mercury, benzene and chromium 6. For decades, it was simply pumped into the local rivers – causing an epidemic of cancers and severely deformed babies. A US court calculated that the unpaid liabilities for destroying so many lives could total more than $27bn. Who has heard of it?

Tsunami and Earthquake Reporting: Gulf Methane Bubble Could Be Horrific.
A new and less well known asymmetric threat has surfaced in the Gulf of Mexico oil gusher. Methane or CH4 gas is being released in vast quantities in the Gulf waters. Seismic data shows huge pools of methane gas at the location immediately below and around the damaged "Macondo" oil well. Methane is a colourless, odourless and highly flammable substance which forms a major component in natural gas. This is the same gas that blew the top off Deepwater Horizon and killed 11 people. The "flow team" of the US Geological Survey estimates that 2,900 cubic feet of natural gas, which primarily contains methane, is being released into the Gulf waters with every barrel of oil.

An Oilicane?

Should a major hurricane push the spill towards the gulf coast there will be nothing that can be done to stop it. No amount of planning or engineering will help. No number of visits to the gulf by the president or any other official will stop the inevitable. The storm surge will drive the water and the oil miles inland. Everything in its path will be coated in a greasy bath of crude. Even the wind may have oil in it. In New England, I have seen hurricanes and tropical storms that have blown salt spray many miles inland from the coast. The leaves of the trees eventually turn brown and fall off. In the case of the gulf it will be oil that will spray the trees, buildings and everything else in the way.
