Thousands of Iraqis Protest in Nasiriyah After Crackdown on Protesters As Death Toll Rises

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah on Monday, attending a funeral march for protesters who died in last week’s clashes between the demonstrators and supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr.

Last week’s clashes culminated Friday when Ridha al-Rikaby was shot in the head and died. His funeral was where the Monday rally started. This brings the death toll to eight. PM Kadhemi sent officials to talk with the protesters.

The protesters are complaining that, just like last year, they are being killed right under the government’s nose, and officials have failed to hold anyone accountable.
