Watch Live: As Anxieties Grow, Mnuchin Promises 'Paycheck Protection Program' Will Be On-Line "Tomorrow"

Following reports that small banks were on the verge of pulling out of the administration's $350 billion "Paycheck Protection Program" over fears they might be blamed for corruption and fraud due to hurried oversight, the White House got Jovita Carranza (the woman who replaced Linda McMahon at the helm of the SBA) and Steve Mnuchin out in front of the cameras to deny reports about a "power struggle" or someother breakdown between them.

In addition to assuring the press that they had stayed up "until 4 am" to smooth out all issues, Mnuchin and Carranza insisted that checks would start landing in bank accounts and small businesses would have access to the loan programs (remember, this money was supposed to cover rent, utilities and payroll due on April 1) which would be "up and running tomorrow."

"This Is Turning Into A Disaster" - Some Americans Might Wait 20 Weeks Or Longer For Stimulus Checks

It looks like the real inside scoop as to what's happening over at Treasury right now is coming courtesy of the CEO of Lendio, a startup focusing on lending to small businesses, who says he was on a recent conference call with the SBA and Treasury.

CEO Brock Blake said that a "power struggle" between the SBA and Treasury is holding up the extremely critical $350 billion loan program that's supposed to save all of America's non-chain restaurants, and other small and family-owned businesses.

GE Aviation Lays Off 50% Of Engine Manufacturing Staff

Unlike Boeing, which offered all of its 160,000 employees "voluntary buyouts" just so it can still keep its bailout option alive which would certainly be snuffed if the company were to announce mass layoffs, General Electric has no such qualms and moments ago the company told CNBC that it is planning to furlough half of its aviation unit’s engine-manufacturing staff as the coronavirus roils the industry.

“Due to the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on the commercial aviation industry, GE Aviation is implementing a temporary reduction in commercial engine assembly and some component manufacturing operations for up to four weeks,” a GE spokesperson said. “We appreciate the commitment of all our employees during this difficult time, and we regret having to take this action. We will continue to deliver for our customers and preserve our capability to respond when the industry recovers.”

Intensified Tornado, Hurricane Seasons Forecasted Due to Abnormally Warm Gulf of Mexico

As sea surface temperatures continue to rise in the Gulf of Mexico, experts warn that the recent uptick may result in an increase of severe weather and storms over the next few months as tornado and hurricane seasons approach.

A recent report from meteorologist Matthew Cappucci of the Washington Post sounded the alarm over water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico that have risen to levels of up to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.

The forecaster noted that during comparable conditions, the US experienced an above-average tornado season in the spring of 2017 and then had the Texas Gulf Coast hit with Category 4 Hurricane Harvey.

Netanyahu Showed Clip From TV Series to Cabinet as Proof of Iranian Coronavirus Cover-Up – Report

As reported separately by Barak Ravid of Israel’s Channel 13 news and the Ynet news site, Netanyahu shared a clip of corpses in body bags rolling down a hole with members of his cabinet during a briefing on coronavirus response on Monday.

He showed it to illustrate his “assertions that Iran was being untruthful about the real consequences of coronavirus,” Raz Zimmit, a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, told Ynet.

Netanyahu’s office later realised, however, that the clip was taken from Pandemic, a mini-series about an unknown virus infecting Los Angeles, which aired on the Hallmark Channel in 2007.

Impeachment 2.0? How Dems & Soros Using COVID-19 Crisis to Disrupt Trump's 2020 Bid

Rich Democratic donors, including George Soros, have thrown their weight behind super PACs' effort to lambast Donald Trump's handling of the COVID-19 outbreak. Vladimir Golstein, associate professor at Rhode Island's Brown University, foresees that the Dems will try to "milk" the crisis until November in order to undermine Trump's re-election bid.

On Monday, CNN reported that Priorities USA Action, the largest Democratic Party super PAC, is launching a $6 million ad campaign slamming President Donald Trump for his response to the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, another Dem super PAC, PACRONYM, announced a similar campaign on 17 March, vowing to spend $5 million on it, according to The Washington Post.

US aircraft carrier's commander fired after pleading for help for sailors with coronavirus

The US Navy has fired the commander of an aircraft carrier who had warned American sailors aboard the vessel would die unless the coronaviru-hit ship was evacuated.

Captain Brett Crozier, the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt with 5,000 people onboard, had called for help to save the lives of his sailors after an unconfirmed number tested positive for Covid-19 more than a week ago while the carrier was in the pacific.

In a letter, which was published by the San Francisco Chronicle and caught the Navy by surprise, Crozier described how bleak the situation was onboard the nuclear-powered carrier as more sailors were diagnosed with the virus.

China rolls out the Health Silk Road

When President Xi Jinping was on a phone call in mid-March with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conti, before the arrival of a China Eastern flight from Shanghai to Milan full of medical help, the key takeaway was the Chinese pledge to develop a Health Silk Road (Jiankang Sichou Zhilu).

That was in fact already inbuilt in the Belt and Road Initiative playbook since at least 2017, under the framework of enhanced, pan-Eurasian health connectivity. The pandemic only accelerated the timeline. The Health Silk Road will run in parallel to the multiple overland Silk Road corridors and the Maritime Silk Road.

Beijing Ramps Up South China Sea War Drills As Pandemic Swallows West

China conducted war drills in the South China Sea this week as the COVID-19 pandemic terrorizes the US, forcing the Pentagon to divert its attention to the Homeland to manage the public health crisis that is unfolding rather than countering Beijing in the open seas.

Asia Times reports that in recent days China ramped up military drills and deployed military assets in the highly contested waters of the South China Sea, specifically in areas that are known to have massive fossil fuel reserves.

While some see China's nationalistic messaging as a bid to rally its people during difficult Covid-19 times, others view the increasingly aggressive naval maneuvers as a bid to exploit America's weakened condition to secure new advantage in the hot spot theater. -Asia Times

Chinese ship hits and sinks Vietnamese fishing boat in South China Sea, detains crew

A Vietnamese fishing boat with eight crew members on board was sunk after being hit by a Chinese ship near the disputed Paracel Islands, local authorities said on Friday, a move that may increase tension in the South China Sea.

“This is the first time a Chinese ship has hit and sunk boats in our commune this year,” said Nguyen Van Hai, a local official from the Quang Ngai province, a few hundred kilometres from the Paracel Islands.

Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea as its territory and has built artificial islands with military-capable facilities over reefs and outcrops in the area, which are also claimed in part by Vietnam.

The Clinton-Silsby Trafficking Scandal And How The Media Covered It Up

Contrary to reports in the media, the crowd sourced investigation labeled by some as “Pizzagate” did not begin with internet sleuths digging through the Wikileaks Podesta Files releases looking for pizza parlors and encoded language discussing human trafficking. It began with the shocking discovery that Hillary and Bill Clinton provided assistance to convicted child trafficker, Laura Silsby, resulting in a reduced sentence for child trafficking.

Silsby was arrested at the Haitian border attempting to smuggle 33 children out of Haiti without documentation. Her sentence and charges were reduced after an intervention by Bill Clinton. In the aftermath of Silsby’s arrest, her originally retained lawyer Jorge Puello was arrested in connection with an international smuggling ring accused of trafficking women and minors from Central America and Haiti. The revelation of this news in November was either ignored by the Western media or attacked by Clinton controlled publications.

First quarantine, now digital leper bells: How much freedom are Britons willing to surrender in a fit of Covid-19 panic?

The NHS is planning to launch a coronavirus contact tracking app to help slow the spread of the disease through the population. It is reportedly planned for launch just before or just after the end of the lockdown, and is being modelled on TraceTogether, a Bluetooth based-app used in Singapore to curb the country’s Covid-19 spread. The idea behind this very 21st century way of keeping tabs on the health of the nation is for patients to upload their diagnostic data to the app. It will then communicate via Bluetooth with other nearby phones. If someone in the vicinity has tested positive for the disease then, after a short delay, those within an as yet to be revealed radius will be notified that they have been near someone with Covid-19.

Ground Control to Planet Lockdown: This Is Only a Test

As much as Covid-19 is a circuit breaker, a time bomb and an actual weapon of mass destruction (WMD), a fierce debate is raging worldwide on the wisdom of mass quarantine applied to entire cities, states and nations.

Those against it argue Planet Lockdown not only is not stopping the spread of Covid-19 but also has landed the global economy into a cryogenic state – with unforeseen, dire consequences. Thus quarantine should apply essentially to the population with the greatest risk of death: the elderly.

Mnuchin Says Energy Firms Can Be Bailed Out By The Fed

As part of the Coronavirus CARES Act, the $2 trillion fiscal stimulus meant to resuscitate the US economy, Congress allocated $454 billion to help underwrite the special lending programs from the Federal Reserve. This could generate up to $4.540 trillion in new lending (assuming 10x leverage for highly-rated assets) likely geared toward small and medium-sized businesses.

It now turns out that the first industry to benefit from direct Fed loans is the imploding US energy sector, which for the past decade benefited indirectly from Fed generosity by issuing junk bonds to yield starved investors who are now facing near certain bankruptcy in the face, as the price of oil - if it stays at this level - assures they will never be repaid.

Wall Street Wins Again: Banks Force Treasury To Double Rate On Small Business Rescue Loan

And so Wall Street wins again.

After we warned earlier that the SBA's $350BN Paycheck Protection Program, which is expected to be launched at midnight tonight and is meant to bailout America's small and medium business (<500 employees), may never even get off the ground because the proposed interest rate on the loan of 0.5% is too low lender banks (alongside with various other considerations as listed below) with JPM saying it “will most likely not be able to start accepting applications on Friday, April 3rd as we had hoped", in a press conference late on Thursday, Steven Mnuchin said that he will double the interest rate on the SBA loan from 0.50% to 1.00% in order to appease banks seeking higher interest rates to participate in the Treasury's bailout program and lend money to the same taxpayers who bailed them out 12 years ago.

Amazon has banned the sale of N95 and surgical masks to the general public, claiming it would restrict sales to hospitals and government organizations dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

EXCLUSIVE: Mexican Chemists Help Sinaloa Cartel Cut China Out of Fentanyl Trade

The Sinaloa Cartel’s fentanyl production continues despite the global pandemic’s limits to Chinese trade, thanks to rogue university chemists.

China is documented as the largest source of illicit chemical precursors going to Mexico for opioid production. They are responsible for the shipment of two primary ingredients known as NPP and 4aNPP, which are essential in the manufacture of fentanyl. If economists are correct, then the global Coronavirus-related shutdowns should have some effect on Mexican cartels’ abilities to manufacture fentanyl. However, recent CBP seizure data indicate near-record amounts of fentanyl appearing in the U.S. on a monthly basis. In February, for example, CBP seized 255 pounds just at ports of entry.

UK company behind La Stampa’s article claiming Russian aid to Italy useless — diplomat

A company registered in the UK is behind the article published in Italy’s La Stampa daily claiming that Russian humanitarian aid to Italy is useless in the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Thursday.

"They have published another fake article with the aim to distort Russia’s actions in relation to the sanitary-epidemiological crisis in Italy. The world is in a sick place. We’re not just talking about the escalating coronavirus pandemic, serious though that is with global deaths doubling over the past week. What is also sick is the way gestures of solidarity are being cynically twisted.

That was promptly arranged after US President Donald Trump asked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone call for help in coping with the coronavirus crisis. Even before the Antonov-124 cargo plane touched down at JFK airport certain US media outlets were labelling the gesture of solidarity as a “propaganda gimmick” by the Kremlin.

The death sentence of the prime accused, British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, was commuted to seven years in prison while the other three convicts, Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil— who were earlier handed life sentences — were set free by the court.

Since Sheikh has been in prison for the past 18 years, his seven-year sentence will be counted from the time served.
