MSNBC host Chris Matthews, 74, RESIGNS live on air after GQ columnist revealed he made sleazy remarks about 'falling in love' with her when she was a guest on Hardball

Longtime MSNBC host Chris Matthews has resigned from the network after facing harsh criticism in the past week over a series of on-air flubs and a journalist's accusation that he made sexist remarks to her.

Matthews made the unexpected announcement live during Monday's episode of Hardball, revealing that he and MSNBC that mutually agreed to part ways.

He cited his inappropriate comments about women as the catalyst for his departure, which came days after freelance journalist Laura Bassett published an article in GQ accusing Matthews of being 'gross and inappropriate' with her before she appeared on his show.

Before Bassett took aim at Matthews, the Hardball host was already in hot water at MSNBC after he berated Sen Elizabeth Warren in a post-debate interview and compared Sen Bernie Sanders' Nevada caucus victory to Nazi Germany's invasion of France in 1940.
