$40 Billion More the Ukraine War: A Wakeup Call for Those Who Still Believe in Lesser-Evilism

The US House of Representatives just approved another massive military "aid" package for the Ukraine War. The Biden administration had initially requested $33 billion in new money for the war, but leaders of both parties in Congress, eager to support the war, quickly said this was not enough, and raised the total for this package to $40 billion, a truly staggering total. The administration had already spent $14 billion before this latest weapons package. The latest spending spree (at a time when many Americans are struggling with crushing debt loads, lack of baby formula and other key supplies, and skyrocketing inflation) brings the total spent in Ukraine in 3 months to $54 billion on the books (not counting all the dark money for the spy agencies). The official annual budget for the War in Afghanistan averaged $46 billion…The sum the US has already spent on this war in a few months is quickly approaching the annual military budget of the entire Russian military.

This money goes to companies like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, etc. These merchants of death make up the military industrial complex; they promote the permanent war economy, and have a vested interest in ensuring the US continues to engage in and support devastating wars abroad that destroy whole countries and societies, lead to millions of deaths and untold horrors like what we have seen in Yemen over the past few years. These same corporate and state ghouls are salivating over the profits to be made in a new cold war with China. In this conflict for global dominance they see a shining opportunity to bleed the taxpayers of this country dry, looking to get blood from a stone in our country where the rich pay and big corporations no real taxes, but the middle class and poor are bled dry, being pushed deeper and deeper into debt-peonage and wage slavery by rising tax rates, shrinking paychecks, and red hot inflation (itself a result of the Federal Reserve’s reckless money printing to bailout the banks numerous times since 2008).

Russia Says It Strikes Ukraine Positions in Battle for Donbas

Russia said on Sunday it had pummelled Ukrainian positions in the east with missiles, targeting command centres and arsenals as its forces seek to encircle Ukrainian army units in the battle for Donbas.

Nearly three months since the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, Russian and Russian-backed forces are still in control of an area of Ukraine about the size of Greece along the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea and in Ukraine's east bordering Russia.

Russian forces have been driven out of the area around the city of Kharkiv in the northeast in the past two weeks, their most rapid losses since being expelled from areas around Kyiv and the north of Ukraine at the start of April.

Zelensky Says Macron Urged Him to Cede Territory to Achieve Ceasefire With Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that French President Emmanuel Macron asked Ukraine to make territorial concessions to Russia to achieve a ceasefire.

“Macron wanted to see results in mediation between us … and suggested to me certain things related to concessions on our sovereignty in order to help Putin save his face,” Zelensky said in an interview with Italian TV. “We are not ready to help someone to save something and lose our territories for it.”

Earlier in the war, Russian demanded that Ukraine drop its claim to Crimea, which has been under Russian control since 2014 and recognize the independence of the breakaway Donbas republics. Macron is one of the few NATO leaders that has favored negotiations as a way to end the fighting, although his office rejected Zelensky’s characterization.

Sen. McConnell Expects Wednesday Vote on $40 Billion Ukraine Aid

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Sunday that he expects the Senate will hold a vote on the nearly $40 billion aid package for Ukraine on Wednesday.

“We expect to invoke cloture — hopefully by a significant margin — on the motion to proceed on Monday, which would set us up to approve the supplemental on Wednesday,” McConnell said in Sweden after visiting Ukraine on Saturday.

By invoking cloture, the Senate can limit the debate on an issue to 30 hours and hold a vote after that time. This past Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) blocked the Senate from voting on the massive aid package, which had already passed in the House.

Russian Envoy Says Russian Diplomats in the US Being Approached by CIA, FBI

Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said Saturday that Russian diplomats working in Washington are receiving threats of violence and are also being approached by the FBI and CIA for information.

“It’s like a besieged fortress. Basically, our embassy is operating in a hostile environment … Embassy employees are receiving threats, including threats of physical violence,” Antonov said, according to Russia’s Tass news agency.

“Agents from US security services are hanging around outside the Russian embassy, handing out CIA and FBI phone numbers, which can be called to establish contact,” Antonov added.

Blinken ‘Confident’ NATO Will Admit Finland, Sweden After Speaking With Turkish FM

On Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he is “confident” that NATO will reach a consensus on accepting Finland and Sweden after speaking with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Blinken attended a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin on Sunday. “I don’t want to characterize the specific conversation that we had either with the foreign minister or within the NATO sessions themselves, but I can say this much: I heard, almost across the board, very strong support for [Finland and NATO] joining the alliance if that’s what they choose to do. And I’m very confident that we will reach consensus on that,” Blinken told reporters.

On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara “doesn’t hold positive views” of Finland and Sweden’s potential membership, signaling Turkey might block them from joining the alliance. Turkey’s issue is Helsinki and Stockholm’s alleged support for the PKK, a Kurdish militant group Ankara considers to be a terrorist organization.

Israel Attacks Syrian City of Hama, Killing Five

Syrian state media reported an Israeli attack Friday night on the city of Hama. The missiles fired hit the city’s outskirts, killing at least five people, including a civilian.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called the targets “weapons depots.” This was not confirmed by state media, which did report material damage was caused.

In keeping with their policy, Israel declined all comment on the matter. In recent months Israel seems to be attacking Syria at least once a week. Satellite images suggested the attack targeted an underground facility, with signs it may have been destroyed outright.

Evidence Links Spanish, EU Arms Sales to Saudis to Yemen War Crimes

A new report (PDF) from the European Center for Constitutional And Human Rights investigates arms sales by EU nation companies, notably Airbus Spain, to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The report finds direct links between the arms sales and war crimes committed in Yemen over the last seven years. It concludes that this raises the question of complicity, particularly by Spain, in international crimes.

In the context of the EU, the concern is particularly about Spain, but internationally it would be even more so nations like the US and UK, who have been selling arms to the Saudis for the war.

Wheat Prices Soar As India Restricts Exports

Ford Dumped 7 Million More Rivian Shares On Friday

After selling 8 million shares at $26.80 on Monday in a move that would cause Rivian shares to open last week's trading in shaky fashion, Ford reportedly dumped another 7 million shares at $26.88 on Friday.

That brought Ford's total shares sold to more than $400 million, according to Bloomberg. It also cuts the automaker's stake in Rivian to nearly 87 million shares. The sales come after a lockup ended last week.

Ford had initially invested $1.2 billion in Rivian and saw the value of its investment balloon since Rivian's public market debut. But since then, its stock has crashed from highs near $172 to a low of $19.25 this past week.

NATO to keep anti-Russian sanctions for as long as necessary — Blinken

All NATO member states are committed to keep the anti-Russian sanctions in place for as long as is necessary, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a news conference on Sunday after an informal meeting of NATO top diplomats in Berlin.

"Every member of the alliance wants to bring this war to an end as soon as possible. We are clearly determined to maintain our security assistance to Ukraine, to continue our sanctions, export control and diplomatic pressure on Russia for as long as is necessary," he said, adding that his country and its NATO allies are "focused on giving Ukraine as strong support as possible on battlefield and at a negotiation table."

Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said earlier that Ukraine’s militarization by the West "directly threatens European and global security." Moscow is calling on "the sponsors of the Kiev regime to stop instigating bloodshed in Ukraine and think about the consequences of their actions," he said, commenting on weapons supplies to Ukraine.

Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators rallied in many US cities, including New York, Boston, Washington, Montreal and Dearborn, Michigan, on Saturday, to show solidarity with Palestinians and call for an end to Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip.

PRO-IRANIAN GROUP ATTACKS THREE US SUPPLY CONVOYS IN SOUTHERN IRAQ

On May 15 morning, three convoys moving logistic supplies and equipment for the US-led coalition came under attack in southern Iraq.

Military Throwing Cash at Recruiting Crisis as Troops Head for the Exits

Hints that the armed services might soon face a problem keeping their ranks full began quietly, with officials spending the last decade warning that a dwindling slice of the American public could serve.

Only about one-quarter of young Americans are even eligible for service these days, a shrinking pool limited by an increasing number of potential recruits who are overweight or are screened out due to minor criminal infractions, including the use of recreational drugs such as marijuana.

US provided $219 million military aid to Iraq, Syria in 2022

The US Central Command on Saturday announced that they had provided around $219 million in the first quarter of the 2022 fiscal year in aid to their allies in Iraq and Syria through the Global Coalition against Islamic State (ISIS).

“Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve provided approximately $219 million in assistance to Iraq partner forces and vetted Syrian partner forces in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2022 through the Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund, or CTEF,” read the statement from the US Central Command.

The statement added that since its inception in 2014, the CTEF has provided over $8.9 billion in assistance to its allies in Iraq in Syria, and the aid has included military vehicles, forklifts, ambulances, wreckers, fuel and water tankers, and communication assets ranging from radios to air traffic control systems and weapons packages.

Troops sent to bolster NATO begin turnover as US mulls larger footprint in Europe

The Pentagon is deploying 10,500 troops in the coming months to replace military units that were rapidly deployed to Europe to bolster NATO’s eastern edge after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

“The deployments are one-for-one unit replacements, which will leave our overall force posture in the region — approximately 100,000 — unchanged,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Friday afternoon. “The units being replaced will return to their home station following an appropriate turnover of responsibilities.”

The storming coincided with Palestinians marking the 74th anniversary of the Nakba – the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their land by Zionist militias during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

Palestinian guards from the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf (Religious Endowment) told The New Arab's Arabic-language service that dozens of settlers took part in the incursions into the mosque courtyard, under the protection of Israeli security forces.

The Russian military discovered evidence of the US conducting experiments with viruses in biological laboratories on the territory of Ukraine. The documents were discovered in laboratories seized as a part of the Russian special military operation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the main goal of the US-funded biological laboratories on the territories of the former soviet republics was to gather biological material and study the spread patterns of viruses.

He added that Russia has obtained, in the course of the special military operation in Ukraine, documents evidencing that these laboratories had engaged in the production of components that could be used to create biological weapons.

China Voices Firm Protest Over G7 Statement Regarding Taiwan and Xinjiang

On Sunday, the Group of Seven raised concern over "the situation in and around the East and South China Seas", saying that Beijing should "abstain from threats, coercion, intimidation measures or the use of force". They also urged China to allow access to Xinjiang and Tibet for independent observers.

Beijing criticised the G7 on Monday, following the group's statement on Taiwan and Xinjiang.

"China is delivering a firm protest to the G7 presidency," Chinese foreign ministry representative Zhao Lijian said at a briefing. "Our stance on the issue of Taiwan and foreign interference in the affairs of Hong Kong, as well as Xinjiang, remains unambiguous."

Russia noted that the US is deliberately concealing information regarding Pentagon-sponsored bio-warfare research in Ukraine.

Moscow intends to initiate a UN probe into posible violations of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), Russian senator Konstantin Kosachev stated on Monday. He noted that the parliament commission on biolabs received evidence from the Russian diplomats, suggesting that the US and Ukraine do not follow the convention.

"We are talking about our activities at a UN platform, where, we hope, an international investigation will be initiated in full accordance with Articles 5 and 6 of the UN Convention [banning the development of bioweapons]", he stated.

California regulator rejects desalination plant despite historic drought

California regulators on Thursday rejected a $1.4 billion desalination plant on environmental grounds, dealing a setback to Governor Gavin Newsom, who had supported the project as a partial solution for the state's sustained drought.

The California Coastal Commission voted 11-0 to reject the proposal by Poseidon Water, controlled by the infrastructure arm of Canada's Brookfield Asset Management, to build the plant on a low-lying coastal site at Huntington Beach, near the town of Costa Mesa, about 30 miles (50 km) south of Los Angeles.

The plant was designed to convert Pacific Ocean water into 50 million gallons (189.3 million liters) of drinking water a day.

US could suspend weapons shipments to Ukraine

The flow of US weapons to Ukraine might be cut off, at least temporarily, unless Congress quickly approves nearly $40 billion in new spending to help Kiev repel Russia’s offensive in the former Soviet republic, the Pentagon has warned.

“May 19 is the day we really, without additional authorities, we begin to not have the ability to send new stuff in . . .,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Friday. “By the 19th of May, it’ll start impacting our ability to provide aid uninterrupted.”

Weapons shipments to Kiev wouldn’t immediately stop on May 20 without new funding because there would still be some supplies in the pipeline purchased under the approximately $100 million in spending authority that the Pentagon currently has remaining for Ukraine aid, Kirby said. However, he added, but by losing its ability to source new cargoes, the Pentagon would face “a period of time with nothing moving” if there’s an extended delay in the new funding approval.

Two arguments are crucial here.

First, while the George H.W. Bush administration managed the politics of the USSR’s collapse with grace and treated the Soviet Union’s successor states — in particular, Russia — with respect; its successors proved unable to resist the temptation to crow and strut over the USSR’s collapse, and in so doing, initiated a pattern of disrespect and of ignoring Russia’s security concerns that extended from NATO’s air campaign against Serbia in 1999, through Russia’s assault on Georgia in 2008, to its annexation of Crimea in 2014, to its invasion of Ukraine in February this year.

From record gasoline prices to higher airfares to fears of diesel rationing ahead, America’s runaway energy market is disquieting both US travellers and the wider economy. But the chief driver isn’t high crude prices or even the rebound in demand: It’s simply too few refineries turning oil into usable fuels.

More than 1mn barrels a day of the country’s oil refining capacity — or about 5% overall — has shut since the beginning of the pandemic. Elsewhere in the world, capacity has shrunk by 2.13mn additional barrels a day, energy consultancy Turner, Mason & Co estimates. And with no plans to bring new US plants online, even though refiners are reaping record profits, the supply squeeze is only going to get worse.

“We are on the razor’s edge,” said John Auers, executive vice president at Turner, Mason & Co in Dallas. “We’re ripe for a potential supply crisis.”

Republican Governors Larry Hogan of Maryland and Glenn Youngkin of Virginia and members of Congress want Garland to uphold federal law that prohibits actions to intimidate judges at their private residences.

According to U.S. code 1507, an individual who "pickets or parades" with the "intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration of justice, or with the intent of influencing any judge, juror, witness, or court officer" near a U.S. court or "near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge, juror, witness, or court officer" will be fined or "imprisoned not more than one year, or both."

Americans increasingly believe acceptance of trans identity has gone too far: Poll

An increasing number of Americans say that the country has gone too far in accepting the identities of transgender people.

Thirty-three percent of Americans say society has gone too far in accepting transgender identities, while 35% say the country has not gone far enough to end discrimination against transgender people. Another 25% say that the country has reached a reasonable balance in how it deals with transgender people, according to the results of an NBC News poll released Sunday.

While more people indicated there is still more work to be done to end discrimination, the two percentage point lead represents a 10 point drop since NBC news last asked the question almost a year ago and is within the poll's 3.10% margin of error. In that August 2021 survey, 26% of Americans said the country had gone too far in accepting transgender identities compared to 38% who indicated society needed to do more to end discrimination.
