"Never has our future been more unpredictable, never have we depended so much on political forces that cannot be trusted to follow the rules of common sense and self-interest—forces that look like sheer insanity, if judged by the standards of other centuries." -- Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

Stone artefacts and animal bones found in a deep cave in northern East Timor offer new insights into where ancient humans lived more than 35,000 years before Egyptians built the first pyramids.

Archaeologists from Australian and United Kingdom universities say thousands of stone artefacts and animal bones found in a cave, known as the Laili rock shelter, in the northern parts of East Timor, indicate ancient humans lived there some 44,000 years ago.

Many historians believe, as do I, that the happiest period of history in the Christian West was during the High Middle Ages within the towns that had grown up most notably within Germany, Italy, France, and England.

Probably the most accessible chronicle of what life was like then may be found in Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales.”

At the centers of these towns were the Gothic cathedrals which were both spiritual and technological hubs. Characteristic of the economic life of the era was the fact that the Church had outlawed usury. This was the key to personal freedom.

The dividing line between that era and our own came into being around 1500, when the German Fugger family persuaded the Pope to begin to allow usury, a practice which quickly spread.

This practice assured that, gradually, all the wealth of society would inevitably accrue to the bankers, especially when they gained the privilege of creating paper money or book-entry credits “out of thin air” and then lending it at interest.

This was the greatest crime of the ages.

It seems the tide is turning against Joe Biden. The liberal establishment was all-in for Biden’s campaign just a year ago. Democrats refused to legitimize RJK’s campaign, forcing him to run as an independent.

But a series of polls reveal that Biden is losing to Trump in must-win states. Biden continues to show that he is suffering from some kind of age-related decline.

With just months before the election, it is unlikely Biden will score major legislative wins to give him a boost (that is especially true with the Supreme Court and Republican-controlled House blocking his agenda). Biden’s own supporters may be losing hope. Just as this is happening, Trump makes a big announcement.

From The Post Millennial:
Former President Donald Trump and the Republican party out-fundraised President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee by almost $25 million in April. On Monday, Team Biden said they raised over $51 million for the month, far below the $76 million that Trump and Republicans hauled in…

“The only people left in America who support Crooked Joe Biden are out-of-touch billionaires in Hollywood, and it turns out even they are done giving to a failing campaign.”

For years Republicans have called on the Biden administration to take action and stop the migrant invasion at the U.S. southern border. The president could easily stop the overflow of illegal immigrants by forcing federal agencies under his authority to follow the law.

Biden and his Democrat allies don’t have the character to admit what they’ve done wrong and correct the problem. Instead, Democrats have tried to pin the problem on Republicans.

The latest liberal spin on the issue has the Democrat-controlled Senate trying to push through a bill that won’t solve the border crisis. Democrats hold a slim majority in the upper house and were hit with a dose of political reality when leadership tried to revive a dead border security bill. Republicans said the bill is dead before it reaches a vote.

Webmaster addition: The problem is the bill also includes more billions for Ukraine and the government has already wasted too much tax money on that failed adventure.

Surprisingly, former National Security Adviser John Bolton strongly defended the conservative justice on CNN, despite being a prominent critic of the 45th president himself.

As The Hill reports:

“Absolutely not,” Bolton told CNN's Wolf Blitzer when asked whether the recent reporting about the flag raised concerns about whether he can serve impartially on the Supreme Court.

“I think it is outrageous, outrageous and unacceptable, for people to take a flag from the American Revolution and say that because some January 6 protesters flew it, that it's now unacceptable to fly that flag, and I'd like to hear a Democratic Party politician say that expressly,” added Bolton, who has frequently been critical of former President Trump and the risk he says Trump poses to the country's national security.

Whistleblowers have informed top Republican senators that former President Barack Obama’s State Department blocked the FBI from executing arrest warrants against illegal aliens in the U.S. who were financially backing Iran’s efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) said that for nearly 20 years, Republican and Democrat administrations imposed sanctions on “Iranian individuals, companies, and organizations for involvement in nuclear proliferation, ballistic missile development, support for terrorist groups, and human rights abuses.”

They noted that even one of Obama’s executive orders and a law passed during the Obama-era, the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015, were created to hold Iran accountable.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was accused by critics this week of saying the quiet part out loud when she said that the Democrats’ criminal trial against former President Donald Trump was a legal way for them to keep him off the campaign trail.

AOC made the remarks while speaking to reporters ahead of Trump’s a rally on Thursday in South Bronx.

“By the way, Trump’s doing it in the South Bronx not to make a point, but because he’s got court,” AOC said. “And the man practically has the legal version of an ankle bracelet around him, and he can’t leave the 5 boroughs because he always has to be in court. So it is truly an embarrassment to him. And I am looking forward to the response of everyday Bronxites talking about how they feel about him coming to their backyard.”

Yo, iPhone users, remember the photos you deleted years ago? How can those reappear unless Apple is storing them on their servers?

Yup, it looks like some — SOME — iPhone users are reporting resurfaced deleted photos appearing on their iPhone after the latest update. A few users, after installing the iOS 17.5 update, revealed that some of these photos were "revealing," opening up a big ol' bag of worms for the rest of you deviant iPhone users to worry about.

People reporting the apparent bug say that they're seeing old photos appear in their Recents album after Monday's update. iOS does give users the option to restore deleted photos, but after 30 days, they're supposed to be permanently removed.

In a recent interview to the Sputnik's Fault Lines podcast, international relations and security analyst Mark Sleboda discussed the West's controversial plan to utilize the interest accrued on frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine.

Sleboda explained that Western governments, facing legal challenges in outright seizing Russian assets, have decided to use the interest generated from these assets. This strategy, they believe, exposes them to less legal liability.

"The real difference is how much they believe they will be legally held responsible in foreign courts for the theft of that," Sleboda said. The primary concern is vulnerability in courts outside Europe, such as in Southeast Asia, where Russia could file claims to recover its assets.

The NATO proxy war against Russia in Ukraine has brought two competing and contradictory Western propaganda narratives to the fore, with officials having the unenviable task of simultaneously talking up the 'threat' posed by Russia to European security and trying to stress Moscow's 'weakness' in Ukraine.

A leading national security publication catering to American military, government and defense officials and specialists has noticed a decisive shift in “tone” in Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s assessment of Russia’s military capabilities amid the ongoing proxy conflict in Ukraine.

The analysis by DefenseNews found that while the Pentagon chief had cheerfully racked up Russia’s losses in blood and treasure at a meeting at Ramstein Air Base back in March, just a month later he qualified his remarks with warnings about the pace at which the Russian military was “recovering.”

What they lack in naval and aerial capabilities the Houthis certainly make up for in gumption. For more than six months, the Yemeni militia has been wreaking havoc on Israeli, US and UK-linked commercial shipping in the Red and Arabian Seas, targeting merchant vessels and warships alike with an arsenal of inexpensive drones and missiles.

Yemen’s Ansar Allah (Houthi) militia has the capability to target vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, a senior Pentagon official has confirmed.

“The Houthis have an advanced array of weaponry,” the senior defense official told reporters in a briefing this week, asking for anonymity to discuss sensitive subject matter. “They have weapons that could reach the Mediterranean. It definitely is of concern that they have that capability,” the official said.

The B-21 was unveiled in late 2022, and is envisioned as the Pentagon's next-generation response to the increasingly sophisticated air defense and radar capabilities of America's adversaries. But there's a catch.

The US Air Force has dropped fresh images of the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider stealth strategic bomber, which the military hopes will become “the backbone of the US Air Force bomber fleet,” during testing at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Flight tests of the aircraft began in November. The Air Force expects B-21s to start entering service between 2025 and 2027.

In the meantime, the Pentagon will have to make do with its "attractive museum piece" Northrop B-2 Spirit bombers, created during the twilight of the Cold War, introduced in the late 1990s, and used to a limited extent to bomb Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya between 1999 and 2017. The B-2 bomber fleet was grounded in December 2022 after a mystery in-flight emergency over Missouri, but returned to service in May 2023.

Russia’s BM-21 Grad is a 122 mm multiple launch rocket system. It is lightweight and highly mobile, capable of firing salvos of rockets at targets up to 42 kilometers away. The BM-21 Grad is renowned for its simplicity, reliability, and effectiveness.

The Russian Defense Ministry has released footage showing BM-21 Grad MLRS wiping out Ukrainian manpower and hardware concentrations in the Avdeyevka area.

The Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainian losses totaled 100 soldiers, three infantry fighting vehicles, and observation and communication equipment.

Germany’s efforts to ramp up supplies of Western-made air defense systems to Ukraine have so far fallen flat, as other nations have largely refused to chip in, Politico reported on Wednesday.

Berlin vowed in April to deliver a third US-made Patriot battery from its stockpile to Kiev to bolster it against Russia. It hoped that others would follow its example under the ‘Immediate Action on Air Defense’ initiative, but partner nations are unwilling to do so, two people familiar with the talks told the news outlet.

Several European nations that own Patriot systems have publicly stated they will not be able to share them with Ukraine. This includes Poland, which is otherwise among the most vocal proponents of sending more arms to Kiev.

Ukraine’s media censor has withdrawn instructions urging news outlets not to use insults when referring to Russian troops and officials. The country’s National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting has taken down an advisory on the widespread Ukrainian media practice of labeling Russians “orcs” and “retards.”

Guidelines on covering frontline news released earlier this month by the Council, urging journalists to avoid dehumanizing language when describing Russian military personnel, had remained largely unnoticed until Wednesday, when some of the content was highlighted by the media.

The advisory claimed that insults “are not ethical or justifiable” in journalism and can fuel tensions in Ukrainian society. It also said the use of derogatory language “does not further objective and open coverage” of news, and may “undermine perception of media outlets as reliable sources of information.” Inflammatory rhetoric could also prolong the hostilities, it suggested.

The UK and its allies should stop “fueling” the Ukraine conflict instead of shifting the blame onto others, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Thursday. His comments came after London accused Beijing of providing “lethal aid” to Russia in its military effort against Kiev.

UK Secretary of State for Defense Grant Shapps claimed on Wednesday that Russia and China are “collaborating on combat equipment for use in Ukraine.” Shapps further alleged that he has “new evidence” provided by the US and British intelligence services which shows “lethal aid is now flying from China to Russia.”

Responding on Thursday Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang said Beijing “condemns the groundless and irresponsible smear campaign against China by British politicians,” noting that Shapps’ remarks have not been supported by Washington. Speaking at a daily White House press briefing on Thursday, the US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said Washington had not seen evidence of China directly providing weapons to Russia.
