The Biden administration’s report on whether Israel has violated U.S. and international humanitarian law during the war in Gaza has been delayed and will no longer be released Wednesday as planned, three Senate aides and a House aide told POLITICO.

The State Department has been working for months on the report, which will issue a determination on whether Israel has violated international humanitarian law since the war in Gaza began. If so, the U.S. would be expected to stop sending Israel military assistance.

But the report won’t be finished by an initial Wednesday deadline, said the aides, granted anonymity to discuss internal communications. In an email, the Biden administration notified the Hill that it will miss the date — without providing a clear reason why.

BBC Rehab Abu Daqqa wearing a head scarf covering her mouth standing in front of a tentBBC
"I don't accept that me or my children should live next to a cemetery," says Rehab Abu Daqqa

The children hear the dogs snarling outside, just beyond the flimsy plastic of the tent.

The seven children of Rehab Abu Daqqa crowd around their mother. She is the last safe harbour in their lives. They have shared things, these children and their mother, which cannot be communicated to those who have not seen the things they have seen. Is there a word to express what a child feels knowing that just a few yards away, animals are dragging a body from a grave?

The vocabulary of childhood is inadequate amid the horrors of this emergency cemetery in Rafah.

Scared is the word Rehab Abu Daqqa uses.

WARNING: This report contains descriptions some readers may find disturbing

That is accurate. But there is more to it, she knows. The children have seen dogs eating the bodies. A human leg lying by a fence. So yes they are scared. But revolted too, and uncomprehending. The children who once had a home, went to school, lived according to the established rhythms of their family and community, are now refugees in a place that reeks of death.

"This morning the dogs took out a body from one of the graves and were eating it," Rehab Abu Daqqa says. "From night until dawn the dogs do not let us sleep… our children keep holding on to me because of how scared they are."

The dogs come in packs of dozens. Domestic pets whose owners are dead or displaced, mixed with Rafah's existing population of strays, all of them now feral and scavenging for whatever they can eat. The cemetery has numerous shallow graves where people place their dead until a time comes when they can be taken to their home area. On some graves relatives have placed bricks to try to keep the dogs away from the dead.

Rehab Abu Daqqa is gaunt and exhausted. Her mouth and nose are covered by cloth to fend off the stench of the graves. She praises the young men who came earlier to reinter a body dragged out that morning.

"I don't accept that me or my children should live next to a cemetery. My child is in the 3rd grade and today instead of playing a game he was drawing a grave and in the middle he drew a dead body. These are the children of Palestine… What can I tell you? Miserable, the word miserable doesn't even explain it."

The cemetery is one of several in Gaza that has become a refuge for people whose homes have been destroyed in the fighting. There are more than 1.4 million people crowded into Rafah - five times its pre-war population. According to the Norwegian Refugee Council that works out at 22,000 people for every square kilometre. Already disease is spreading, with outbreaks of diarrhoea, hepatitis A, and meningitis - as well as a continuing hunger crisis.

Rafah is where the refugees of Gaza reach the final wall, the border with Egypt which is closed to the overwhelming majority of the displaced. They arrive after being pushed from one place to another by the advance of the Israeli forces. Rehab Abu Daqqa has fled three times already and may soon have to uproot her family again if the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) offensive on Rafah goes ahead.

Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said a military operation in Rafah will go ahead "with or without" a ceasefire to destroy what he says are four Hamas battalions in the city. Hamas insists there can be no deal without a commitment to permanently end the war. Far right members of the Israeli coalition cabinet are warning Mr Netanyahu against compromise. The Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, a standard bearer for the settler movement, has called for "absolute destruction" in Rafah, saying there can be no "half work".

"Where do they [refugees] move to? " asks Dr Rik Peeperkorn, regional director of the World Health Organization (WHO), who recently returned from Rafah.

Dr Rik Peeperkorn from the WHO warns that an offensive in Rafah would lead to another humanitarian disaster on top of the existing one

"We already have a crisis in health. We have a water and sanitation crisis, a food crisis. There's a humanitarian disaster. So, there'll  be just another humanitarian disaster on top of this… What we expect will be substantial additional mortality and sickness when a military incursion happens. So, a lot more people dying… a lot more death and a lot more diseases."

Dr Peeperkorn worked for seven years in Afghanistan with the UN and is not a man who is easily daunted. But when we met in Jerusalem he looked tired. The tiredness of a man who wakes every morning to the certainty of a crisis that seems to threaten ever worse consequences.

The WHO is already preparing for additional field hospitals to help if people are forced to move. But what happens to the seriously ill and the elderly, the 700 kidney dialysis patients who are currently being treated in a facility which once used to cater to 50?

"If you look at our health sector, it is crippled already and an incursion will actually mean that we lose another three hospitals… like they cannot be reached, they might be damaged, they might be partially destroyed. We are preparing for it with a contingency plan which is like a band aid."

Young boy lies on a hospital bed
A boy receiving treatment at the European Hospital in Rafah

My BBC colleagues have provided graphic evidence of the conditions inside hospitals, filming day after day throughout the war. At the European Hospital in Rafah families are camped in any space they can find, in the grounds and inside. They prepare meals in wards. Their children roam along the darkened corridors, past the wounded being wheeled on trollies, an old woman sitting on her own staring into the distance.

In the emergency care ward, 11-year-old Yassin al Ghalban is crying on his bed. His legs are gone, amputated below the knee after an air strike. A relative standing by the bed says, "he is surviving on painkillers".

A young boy named Yassin al Ghalban lies on a hospital bed in bandages, with both legs amputated below the knee

There is no talk of hope here. Hope in Gaza departs at different speeds according to your circumstances. It can vanish in a second with the killing of a loved one. Or it can depart incrementally, hour after hour, as you are pushed from one squalid camp to another, and words fail as the questions from the children pile up.

Claire's Observations:  Your tax dollars at work, folks, because it is American bombs and bullets being used to destroy as many  Palestinian lives as possible; doesn't it make you feel proud to be an American, this morning, as you look at the pictures of kids whose legs had to be amputated, courtesy of an IDF airstrike; doesn't it make you feel great, that American foreign policy led to this outcome for this kid and his family?!?   Is THIS the flipping "best" US government policy can do?!?

Whatever the hell the IDF and Mossad have on every member of the American government, I would love to know;   and expose it to the world, so it would no longer have power over the White House and Congress, and any decisions  it made about financial and military aid to Israel.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) warned this week that right-wing organizations connected to former President Donald Trump are planning an attack in case President Joe Biden wins the election in November.

The California lawmaker made the allegations during an interview on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”

Warning that America “better be careful” about what Trump could do, she asked Biden and the Justice Department to work on preemptively stopping right-wing violence.

“I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to ask the Justice Department, and I am going to ask the president to tell us what they are going to do to protect this country against violence if [Biden] loses,” she stated.

On Friday, Joe Biden hosted a Medal of Freedom ceremony to honor a bunch of his leftist buddies — including James Clyburn, John Kerry, Al Gore, and Nancy Pelosi — with America's highest civilian honor. As usual with Democratic presidents, there are legitimate questions about whether some of the recipients have legitimately earned the honor.

Most likely, not — but that's another topic for another time.

The real highlight of the event was Joe Biden's performance. As his 2024 State of the Union address becomes a faint memory, his more recent public appearances have been anything but fiery or energetic, and the Medal of Freedom ceremony was a classic example.

First, the following clip raises questions as to whether Biden even knew what ceremony he was at.

"I know [sic] personal experience that you wish you'd never had to be at an event like this one without a piece of your soul having been gone."

In a Tuesday decision, Cannon vacated (canceled) Trump's May 20 trial date, and wrote that setting a new date given the enormous stack of pre-trial matters would be "imprudent."

On Monday, Cannon postponed a filing deadline for Trump's team to provide a list of classified documents they want to present at trial - which was supposed to be filed by this Thursday. Cannon did not announce a new deadline, perhaps the first clue into today's decision.

The move also comes after special counsel Jack Smith's team admitted that the classified files at the heart of the case had been tampered with, and they needed more time to assess that revelation.

A new Covid strain feared to be behind a sudden rise in cases around the world is feared to be “harder to stop” with increased immunity to current vaccines, it has been reported.

Latest figures from the UK Health Safety Agency show a rise of 15.7 per cent in confirmed cases as the virus continues to mutate. Its most recent strain has been dubbed FLiRT after the technical name for its mutation. It currently makes up around 25 per cent of cases in the US and is feared to become the next variant to take control. Another variant, known as KP.1.1, accounts for 7.5 per cent of positive cases in the country with fears it could spread worldwide, the Daily Star reported.

A spokesman for the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning call and said: “Viruses constantly change through mutation and sometimes these mutations result in a new variant of the virus. Some changes and mutations allow the virus to spread more easily or make it resistant to treatments or vaccines. As the virus spreads, it may change and become harder to stop.”

Greene made the comments in response to a video shared by journalist Ian Miles Cheong showing a pro-Palestinian crowd in New York City threatening to “escalate” their threats.

“It is the time to escalate!” a speaker chants as the crowd. “Whatever you have, wherever you are — join us! Because this is the time to escalate!”

In the weeks following Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel last year, the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, repeatedly warned those engaged in the war to proceed with extreme care—specifically cautioning against using starvation as a weapon of war.

Six months on, with Gaza experiencing a “full-blown famine” and more than 75 percent of its population displaced, the Israeli and international media are abuzz with news about the ICC potentially issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli officials—including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Israel expects the leaders of the free world to stand firmly against the ICC[’s] outrageous assault on Israel’s inherent right of self-defense,” Netanyahu said in a video statement last week.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, recently extended a key deadline in President Donald Trump’s criminal trial for allegedly mishandling White House documents. This indefinitely paused a requirement that Trump disclose what classified materials his legal team plans to introduce at trial.

This decision marks the latest in a series of delays by Judge Cannon, which resulted in the trial being postponed without a new date being determined.

Trump’s legal team has argued that Special Counsel Jack Smith and government prosecutors mishandled evidence by moving documents out of order within the boxes seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

The Justice Department has not responded to a request for comment on the latest delay, and it is currently unclear when Judge Cannon will set new deadlines for the classified documents disclosures or when the trial will start.

A stunning report detailed the expenses on Disney films and found that the totals of just four of its big-budget projects lost the company more than half a billion in 2023.

Disney films showed up repeatedly on a list of the biggest bombs of the year, and the amount of money the mouse brand is willing to shell out only for the movies to end up deeply in the red is truly mesmerizing.

The report by Deadline is a real eye opener in terms of the volume of cash that can be evaporated by a studio — even outside of the actual production budget — when a film doesn't live up to expectations.

The outlet reported that typically Disney pumps out the majority of the top 10 most-profitable films in a year due to its Marvel movies, but those figures have largely unraveled due to the losses of Disney+. However, it should be noted that Disney and Marvel movies have suffered from insufferable wokeness and diversity-driven casting, which of course CEO Bob Iger denies.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump's legal team moved for a mistrial of the New York criminal case against the former president amid testimony from porn actress Stormy Daniels, according to live updates from the courthouse.

Last year, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) charged Trump with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records concerning payment made to Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen. Cohen alleged he paid Daniels a $130,000 so-called "hush money" payment to keep quiet about an alleged affair she had with the former president.

Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche, argued that Daniels' claims during the prosecution's direct examination differed from her previous public statements.

"We move for a mistrial based on the testimony of this witness," Blanche told acting Justice Juan Merchan on Tuesday, claiming that Daniels went over the "guardrails" set by the court.

Webmaster addition: Judge Merchan refused the motion for a mistrial. The farce goes on.

Because it's never enough... Ukraine is now eyeing the US-made MQ-9 Reaper even while Kiev awaits F-16 deliveries from the West.

It is the latest long-range weapon system being sought by the Zelensky government. Politico has reported that the $30 million drone has moved to the top of Kiev's arms shopping 'wish list'.

Picture alliance/dpa

"Ukraine is increasingly interested in obtaining the MQ-9 Reaper spy drone from the U.S., bumping it up to the top of its wish list in recent months as it plans operations for the summer and seeks new ways to help identify Russian targets deep behind the front lines," the report indicates.

"Since the early days of the war, the Reaper has been a priority for Kyiv as it sought to use them for strike and surveillance missions," Politico continues. "But recently, Ukraine has dialed back that request and is mainly interested in using Reapers only for reconnaissance, according to four people familiar with the issue who were granted anonymity to discuss the new strategy."

Ukrainian officials who now claim the Reaper would be used "only for reconnaissance" appear to in reality to be creating political cover for the Biden administration. US officials might otherwise be fearful of the risks.

At $30 million a piece, the MQ-9 would be a prime target for the Russians to shoot down. In 2023 the Pentagon lost a Reaper over the Black Sea after an encounter with Russian fighter jets. A jet dumbed its fuel on the drone, after which the drone crashed, and later the Russian navy recovered the wreckage.

The Pentagon has also lost three MQ-9 drones over Yemen and the Red Sea of late. A deep reluctance to see them shot down over Ukraine is likely a main reason the US is still holding back. The drone is typically equipped with expensive Hellfire missiles and other advanced defense tech.

But, the Biden administration has more recently seemed to back off its prior insistence that Ukraine not strike inside Russian territory...

The Guardian on Monday made public a CIA document allowing the agency’s director to “approve, modify, or disapprove all proposals pertaining to human subject research.”

Human what?

At Guantanamo, the CIA gave huge doses of the terror-inducing drug mefloquine to prisoners without their consent, as well as the supposed truth serum scopolamine. Former Guantanamo guard Joseph Hickman has documented the CIA’s torturing people, sometimes to death, and can find no explanation other than research:

“[Why] were men of little or no value kept under these conditions, and even repeatedly interrogated, months or years after they’d been taken into custody? Even if they’d had any intelligence when they came in, what relevance would it have years later? . . . One answer seemed to lie in the description that Major Generals [Michael] Dunlavey and [Geoffrey] Miller both applied to Gitmo. They called it ‘America’s battle lab.’”

Non-consensual experimentation on institutionalized children and adults was common in the United States before, during, and even more so after the U.S. and its allies prosecuted Nazis for the practice in 1947, sentencing many to prison and seven to be hanged. The tribunal created the Nuremberg Code, standards for medical practice that were immediately ignored back home. Some American doctors considered it “a good code for barbarians.”

The code begins: “Required is the voluntary, well-informed, understanding consent of the human subject in a full legal capacity.” A similar requirement is included in the CIA’s rules, but has not been followed, even as doctors have assisted with such torture techniques as waterboarding.

Thus far, the United States has never really accepted the Nuremberg Code. While the code was being created, the U.S. was giving people syphilis in Guatemala. It did the same at Tuskegee. Also during the Nuremberg trial, children at the Pennhurst school in southeastern Pennsylvania were given hepatitis-laced feces to eat.

Philippine and US forces are simulating scenarios that observers say are deemed relevant to potential conflicts over Taiwan and the South China Sea, with missions involving the retaking of an island and the sinking of a Chinese-made vessel in the final week of this year’s Balikatan joint military exercises.

On Monday, a small contingent of US and Philippine marines disembarked from Black Hawk helicopters to Itbayat, a remote town located on the Philippines’ northernmost island of the same name, which is about 160km (100 miles) south of Taiwan.

Their exercise mission was to retake the remote island, which lies along the strategic Bashi Channel, from a foreign invader.

Junge Freiheit via The European Conservative,

The Verden regional court in Lower Saxony has upheld a verdict against Rotenburg AfD leader Marie-Thérèse Kaiser for incitement to hatred. The 27-year-old was also found guilty in the appeal hearing on Monday of inciting hatred against Afghan local workers.

For this, the politician now has to pay 100 day fines (a type of fine related to daily income of the convicted) plus a fine of €60, a total of €6,000. In Germany, you are considered to have a criminal record if you are sentenced to pay more than 90 day fines.

The charge was based on a post that Kaiser had spread on her social media accounts in August 2021. In it, she wrote: “Afghanistan refugees; Hamburg SPD mayor for ‘unbureaucratic’ acceptance; Welcoming culture for gang rape?”

Among other things, the politician linked to an article showing that Afghans in Germany are particularly heavily involved in gang rape.

The verdict has now also caught the attention of X CEO Elon Musk. He retweeted a post summarizing the punishment and wrote: “Are you saying the penalty was imposed for repeating accurate government statistics? Was there anything wrong with what she said?”

Claire's Observations:  This... is insanity writ large, that a prosecution of this type could be held up for merely quoting the German Government's own statistics. German women  need to start taking what self-defense courses there might be, and learn to walk in groups, to attempt to prevent this horrific crime.  And the reality is, this kind of thing didn't happen before Germany had this massive influx of Afghani immigrants.

Benjamin Netanyahu last night moved into Rafah, the last refuge of 1.6 Gazans. What happens next was so preventable. Right, so there was definitely a feeling of unease last night here at UK time as it looked liked after months of threats and amid a ceasefire deal that had suddenly gone sideways for Benjamin Netanyahu, he was ordering the IDF into Rafah, the last refuge of the Gazan people pretty much as 1.6m of them are trapped there, kettled is the term, cornered with nowhere to go, half of the people shielding there with no more than tents for protection, now being bombed, despite Hamas having literally agreed to release hostages as part of that same ceasefire deal that Netanyahu now doesn’t like. The scale of death and destruction that could now be meted out in a very short space of time, for no other reason that for Netanyahu to keep his grip on power, would be unparalleled to anything we’ve witnessed since October 7th and this is so appallingly preventable.

A group representing musicians in Iceland has called on the Nordic country’s broadcaster RUV to withdraw from the next year’s Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is allowed to participate.

More than 19,400 people, mostly women and children, have been killed as a result of Israeli airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, the latest figures from the health ministry in the Palestinian enclave suggest. The IDF launched its attacks on Gaza in response to an incursion into Israel by Hamas on October 7, which left some 1,200 dead.

“We all have a duty to take a stand against war and the killing of civilians and innocent children,” the Association of Composers and Lyricists of Iceland (FTT) said in a statement on Facebook last week.

The FTT called on the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RUV) “not to participate in Eurovision in 2024 unless Israel is denied participation in the competition on the same grounds as Russia in the last competition.”

“We owe it to the nations that act with military force to not share with them in an event that is always characterized by joy and optimism,” the musicians said.

A wave of university campus protests across Europe and the US expressing solidarity with Palestinians over the war in Gaza has reached Nordic countries, according to media reports.

In Finland, dozens of protesters from the Students for Palestine solidarity group have reportedly erected an encampment outside the main building at the University of Helsinki. They are demanding that the institution cut ties with Israeli universities, including terminating all exchange student agreements and research cooperation.

According to the demonstrators, Israeli universities, particularly Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have been involved in developing weapons technologies used in Gaza and in training military personnel in cooperation with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Hamas has warned Israel that the ongoing round of ceasefire talks is the 'last chance' to free its hostages after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this week rejected a deal that was accepted by the Palestinian group.

War-weary Palestinians rejoiced in the streets on Monday at news that Hamas had accepted a ceasefire agreement hashed out by Egyptian and Qatari negotiators - only for Israel to dismiss the deal and commence bombing of the southern city of Rafah overnight.

Then on Tuesday, after weeks of vowing to launch a ground incursion into Rafah despite international objections, Israeli tanks seized the border crossing that has served as the main conduit for aid into the besieged Palestinian territory.

Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie have laid out a list of demands for Speaker Mike Johnson - and are now holding off on their movement to oust him...for now.

'I am so done with words,' said Greene, who last week said she would 'absolutely' call up a motion to oust Johnson this week after huddling behind closed doors for hours. 'For me, it's all about action.'

Greene, R-Ga., along with Massie, R-Ky., are insisting the speaker commit to no more funding for Ukraine, among other demands.

Johnson spearheaded a $95 billion foreign policy bill that passed last month with Democrat support authorizing nearly $61 billion to Ukraine, along with billions to Israel and Taiwan

He was forced to rely on support from Democrats as he presides over a tiny one-vote majority in the House, and it's challenging to get the unruly GOP conference in line.

'Not another red cent this year,' Massie said. 'Which is probably as long as he's going to be speaker if he survives using Democrat votes and motion to vacate assuming that he doesn't come through on some of these suggestions.'
