Thought for the day

"Democracy has little meaning when big business rules the life of the country through its control of the means of production, exchange, transportation, and communication, reinforced by command of the press, press agents and other means of publicity and propaganda." -- US philosopher John Dewey

Meta has been ranked the worst performer on the S&P500, as its shares continue to slump amid concerns over the development its costly virtual world - the Metaverse.

Shares of the Facebook and Instagram owner slumped to a new low Thursday, down roughly 73 percent over the past year, essentially wiping out its pandemic boom.

The company's shares are performing even worse than Align Technology, Generac Holdings, SVB Financial Group and Match Group - all companies which make up the bottom tier of the S&P500 stock market index.

The Russian military – under instruction from Vladimir Putin – is rewriting the rules of siege warfare for the 21st century.

The classic definition of a siege is: “The process of surrounding and attacking a fortified place in such a way as to isolate it from help and supplies, for the purpose of lessening the resistance of the defenders and thereby making capture possible.”

But in the Ukraine war, Putin has unleashed a series of localized sieges over towns and districts in cities, as was seen with the 80-day siege of the Azovstal steel works.

Russia cannot create a physical siege of the whole of Ukraine (akin to a blockade) because relief routes open through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania means that Ukraine can receive and move goods through multiple entry points.

It has been reported that Iran is preparing to transfer short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for use against targets in Ukraine, allegedly as part of a shipment of 1,000 additional weapons of unspecified type.

Iran has allegedly already transferred a number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Russia. Many of these drones have been used in Ukraine, although the Islamic Republic has denied involvement.

I have researched Russia’s military industrial complex under sanctions, as well as Iran’s procurement for its own weapons programs. This has led me to believe that the transfer of these systems, while allowing Russia to continue to inflict horrendous death and destruction against civilian populations and infrastructure in Ukraine, is unlikely to change the overall strategic balance.

A member of the Ugandan parliament has opposed the pro-LGBT and abortion provisions that may be included in an updated trade agreement between the European Union and many countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament in Uganda, spoke on behalf of his country at the African, Caribbean, and Pacific-European Union (ACP-EU) summit earlier this week about the unnecessary addition of clauses which support the LGBT agenda and abortion in the revised Cotonou Agreement.

Central banks globally have been accumulating gold reserves at a furious pace last seen 55 years ago when the U.S. dollar was still backed by gold. According to the World Gold Council (WGC), central banks bought a record 399 tonnes of gold worth around $20 billion in the third quarter of 2022, with global demand for the precious metal back to pre-pandemic levels.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday reiterated his refusal to impose a nationwide Covid-like lockdown to contain the spread of Ebola despite a worrying increase in cases.

Since the health ministry first declared an Ebola outbreak in the central district of Mubende, the disease has spread across the East African nation, including to the capital Kampala.

But Museveni ruled out any plans for a nationwide lockdown, instead urging citizens to "be more vigilant" and observe measures put in place to control the spread of Ebola.

"There will be NO LOCKDOWN. Therefore, people should go ahead and concentrate on their work without any worry," he said on Twitter.

President Donald Trump won the 2020 election. I watched every hearing and watched every credible video following the steal. Massive ballot dumps in the middle of the night – hundreds of thousands between Georgia and Pennsylvania alone. Mail-in ballots not only accepted days after a federal election ends, but counted.

There was counting of ballots put off until the next day. In Allegheny, Pennsylvania, counting of ballots stopped at 1:30 a.m. and didn't resume until the next morning at 10 a.m. In Fulton County, Georgia, counting was stopped on Nov. 3 due to a pipe bursting, which was not only fixed, but the polling center was still operational. There are several videos clearly showing a woman putting a stack of ballots in a counting machine five separate times – the same stack of ballots!

All in violation of federal election laws. Foster v. Love, 522 U.S. 67, 71-72 is a 9-0 U.S. Supreme Court decision handed down in 1997. The court had agreed to take up the issue of federal statutes vs. states' regarding election for federal offices and state election dates, ruling that "Election Day" means what it says: a singular day. The case that started it: Murphy J. Foster Jr., Governor of Louisiana, et al., Petitioners v. G. Scott Love, Paul S. Bergeron, Kathleen B. Balhoff, and Bennie Baker-Bourgeois.

It's rare SCOTUS has a 9-0 decision, and the unanimity surprised me considering that the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg was on the bench back then. You can read the transcript of the oral arguments using a search engine: Foster v. Love Oral Argument October 6, 1997.

The signing of a provisional deal between Russia and the Taliban in September 2022 marks the Taliban’s first known major international economic deal.

But beyond the announcement that Russia will supply gas, oil and wheat to Afghanistan, the payment and pricing details have not been released to the public. How the two countries will navigate international sanctions and their exclusion from the global banking system remains unclear.

This deal comes against the backdrop of active trade talks between the Taliban and its regional neighbors and Russia’s discussions with several non-Western countries on long-term oil contracts.

The economic value of Afghanistan-Russia trade relations might be dismal, but more bilateral engagements and partnerships are a positive diplomatic asset for Russia and the Taliban. They show the international community that neither country is isolated.

The Pentagon sent a powerful warning to North Korea on Thursday, telling Pyongyang that use of any kind of nuclear weapon against Seoul or other regional allies would result in the end of Kim Jong Un's dictatorial regime.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup, after meeting Thursday at the Pentagon, released a joint statement.

They 'strongly condemned' North Korea's escalating military flexing, including ballistic missile test launches, multiple rocket launches and coastal artillery.

As tragic as the attack on Paul Pelosi was, it’s presented us with an excellent opportunity. For too long, extremist speech in this country has gone unpunished. Now, at last, we have a chance to hold these reckless instigators responsible.

The latest data seems to show voters may be breaking for Republicans in next week's midterm elections. That's good news for them in the short term. In the bigger picture, if that happens, everyone better buckle up. The left and their media and tech partners are going to have a fit.

If Democrats lose broadly in the election, their first move should be to look inward. Their policy choices have contributed to historically high and destructive inflation. By showering the country with too much COVID relief spending and pressuring the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates too low for too long, they helped drive up prices across the board. Their anti-fossil fuel agenda also helped push up energy prices. These choices hit every American budget. Certainly, there were factors at play out of any politician's control, but major glaring policy mistakes played a part. Voters know it, and they seem eager to make the perpetrators pay a political price.

When you look around at the political scene, less than a week from the 2022 midterm elections, what do you see?

You see poll numbers trending toward a wave victory for Republicans. They now lead by 3 points in the generic vote for the House among likely voters, while FiveThirtyEight has flipped to show them with a 53% chance for a Senate majority.

Polls in key statewide races have shown Republican gains since Labor Day. And even the mildly encouraging results for Democrats in New York Times-Siena College polls in close House races were undercut three days later, when New York Times analyst Nate Cohn revealed there was a "wide disparity in Democratic and Republican response rates."

Meanwhile, as Democrats have pointed out, you see many more poll numbers from partisan Republican pollsters than partisan Democratic pollsters. But there's a reason for that. As Republican pollster Bill McInturff argued, partisan pollsters and campaign clients don't release unfavorable numbers. That's an indication that Democrats have no good news to share.

We don't have a mainstream media. We have a meathead media.

Actor and director Rob Reiner captured the paranoid style of the press in summarizing the latest nationally televised Republican-smearing speech by our president. "President Biden couldn't have been clearer. These midterms will determine whether we want to preserve our 246 year Democratic experiment in self rule or surrender to the Tyranny of Fascism," Reiner tweeted.

This kind of deranged speech is treated as conventional wisdom. Everyone is supposed to understand that you should feel compelled to vote down the ticket for the Democrat Party because the Republicans are the Tyranny of Fascism Party.

"Democracy is on the ballot," our president says, which heavily implies voting against his wishes is voting for the end of the American experiment. It would be a vote for autocracy, or monarchy. Democrats somehow cannot see that this carries the echoes of autocracy, or monarchy. They tell voters they don't have actual choices on the ballot. It should be a one-party state, or democracy dies.

House Oversight Committee Republicans are kicking off an investigation into what they they called a “taxpayer-funded censorship campaign” at the Department of Homeland Security.

Since 2020, the federal agency has been under fire for working with big tech companies to censor certain viewpoints mainly related to election integrity. The GOP launched its investigation after Monday’s report by The Intercept dove into how the Feds had begun pressuring tech companies on a range of issues, including COVID-19, the vaccine for it, and Ukraine.

AOC defended the pricey garment by stating the store is run with unionized labor receiving a fair wage in addition to claiming all proceeds from the shop “go to community acts like tutoring underserved kids.”

Her own site betrays that claim, however.

The FAQ section explicitly states that all purchases made in the online shop “are campaign contributions.”

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has officially sent his company-wide email announcing massive layoffs —but it sounds like employees at the social media giant are not going to go quietly.

“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” an email from the company sent to all employees stated. “We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward.”

“Given the nature of our distributed workforce and our desire to inform impacted individuals as quickly as possible, communications for this process will take place via email,” the message said.

“To help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data, our offices will be temporarily closed and all badge access will be suspended,” the email concluded. “If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home. We acknowledge this is an incredibly challenging experience to go through, whether or not you are impacted. Thank you for continuing to adhere to Twitter policies that prohibit you from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere. We are grateful for your contributions to Twitter and for your patience as we move through this process.”

Leftist internet traffic cop NewsGuard is in no position to be throwing around the “hoax” label when its own CEO tried to dismiss the Hunter Biden laptop scandal as a “hoax.” It's a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.

NewsGuard released a new self-serving report headlined: “Making YouTube Look Good: Rumble Becomes Hoax Central Ahead of the Midterms.” NewsGuard's primary complaint was that Rumble doesn’t abide by NewsGuard’s leftist ratings system like censorship-obsessed YouTube does: “In search results, Rumble pushes twice as many sites rated untrustworthy by NewsGuard as YouTube,” which is laughable in the face of a December 2021 MRC study that showed outlets rated “left” or “lean left” by AllSides getting an average NewsGuard score of 93/100, while sites that AllSides considered “right” or “lean right” scored an abysmal average NewsGuard rating of 66/100.

This is the same NewsGuard whose CEO Steven Brill claimed before the 2020 elections that the Hunter Biden laptop scandal reported by the New York Post was a Russian “hoax.” The New York Times and others would later verify the authenticity of the laptop’s contents.

A wide and bipartisan majority of Americans worry there is increased danger of politically motivated violence in the United States, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Nearly 9 in 10 Americans (88 percent) are concerned that political divisions have intensified to the point that there’s an increased risk of politically motivated violence in the United States, including over 6 in 10 who are “very concerned.”

Watchdog group Protect the Public's Trust has called for an investigation into White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre after making public comments she made that appeared to endorse partisan political messaging.

PPT wrote to the Office of Special Counsel after Jean-Pierre spoke from the official podium in the White House briefing room on Wednesday, saying "Unfortunately, we have seen mega MAGA Republican officials who don't believe in the rule of law. They refuse to accept the results of free and fair elections, and they fan the flames of political violence through what they praise and what they refuse to condemn."

The Hatch Act bars public officials, excluding the president and vice president, from engaging in partisan political activity.

Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee released a 1,000-page report on Friday alleging widespread politicization and misconduct in the FBI.

The damning file said the bureau is 'rotted at its core,' manipulated domestic violent extremism statistics for political purposes and downplayed investigations and 'serious allegations of wrongdoing' leveled at Hunter Biden.

Republican members of the committee also said whistleblowers have come forward with allegations of 'rampant corruption, manipulation, and abuse' and have tried to purge conservative employees.

If Democrats have their way, parents who oppose transgender ideology or irreversible drugs and surgeries for kids may lose custody of their children in the near future.

That may sound too radical to be real, but it’s happening.

In late September, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill, SB 107, that allows California courts to take “emergency jurisdiction” of children who come to the state for “gender transitions.”

In other words, starting in January, California will be able to strip parents in any state of their custody rights if their children seek chemical or surgical mutilation within California’s borders, or even through telemedicine with a California-based doctor.

Moreover, the law, authored by a homosexual lawmaker from San Francisco and co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood, could promote abduction of minors to California – and leave parents powerless to stop it.
