The Biden administration is setting up new tripwires for Donald Trump at America’s premier health research agency to safeguard against political interference if Trump wins in November.

The White House fears Trump could try to advance an ideological agenda at the National Institutes of Health, like the ones he’s suggested on everything from vaccines to diversity policies.

In an effort to Trump-proof, NIH has designated an official to identify political meddling in the agency’s work and is tasking a soon-to-be-established scientific integrity council with reviewing those cases. The White House knows Trump could still cast those plans aside but is calculating that doing so will set off alarms with the media, Congress and the public. The Biden administration likely hopes GOP lawmakers, even those who think the NIH needs an overhaul, will temper Trump’s moves.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of "serious consequences" if Western countries allow Ukraine to use their weapons to strike Russia.

Speaking in Uzbekistan on Tuesday, Putin's comments came in response to calls within some NATO member states to allow Ukraine to hit targets inside Russia.

"This constant escalation can lead to serious consequences," Putin said.

"In Europe, especially in small countries, they should be aware of what they are playing with," he added.

The Russian leader said leaders should bear in mind the "small territory" and "dense population" of many European countries.

"And this factor, which they should keep in mind before they talk about striking deep into Russian territory, is a serious thing."

He said that while Ukraine would carry out the strikes, the responsibility for them would lie with Western suppliers of the weapons.

Top advisors and strategists are reportedly growing increasingly concerned about President Joe Biden’s prospects against former President Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election. The sentiment, reported by POLITICO, has surfaced amidst a backdrop of challenging polls and fundraising supremacy held by Trump, intensifying concerns as the election looms just five months away.

A deep-seated fear is pervasive among Democrats, including those who were previously confident about Biden’s chances. The party, ensnared in a relentless and joyless campaign grind, now confronts the reality of a potential loss, causing a significant shift in mood at the highest levels. The anxiety is evidenced by a private list maintained by an adviser to major Democratic donors, cataloging nearly two dozen potential reasons for Biden’s defeat, which range from immigration issues and high inflation to concerns over Biden’s age and the unpopularity of Vice President Kamala Harris.

One simply has to reason through the claim to uncover the absurdity. If corporations can willy-nilly raise prices and enjoy “excessive” profits, why don’t they do it all the time? Did corporations suddenly get greedy in 2021? And why did the Federal Reserve spend a decade fretting about inflation being ‘too low’ as it struggled to hit its 2% target? Was there not enough corporate greed before coronavirus?”

When you think about it this way, something else apparently happened.

Two days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to halt its military offensive on Rafah, dozens of displaced Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes. On Sunday night, the Israeli military bombed civilians whom it had previously ordered to move to the designated “safe zone” of Tal Al-Sultan in the northwestern part of Rafah.

Israel has bombed Rafah dozens of times since the ICJ ruling. But on Sunday, the bombardment of Palestinians in a tent encampment behind the UNHCR school in Rafah resulted in a large inferno and massive casualties, including children who were burned alive in a sea of flames. According to Al Jazeera, the Israeli airstrikes struck the camp at night. The fire from the bombs falling on the plastic tents spread rapidly, killing at least 45 Palestinians, injuring 249, and razing the tent camp to the ground. This was reportedly followed by an Israeli drone strike on the Kuwaiti Hospital entrance as medics were bringing in the dead and the wounded, killing two staff members.

Hospital director Suhaib al-Hams announced on Monday that the Kuwaiti Hospital would have to suspend services due to “the repeated and deliberate attacks on the hospital’s surroundings.”

The graphic images and cell phone video recordings that have been circulating on social media — a headless child, charred bodies of children, women and children frantically running in all directions trying to escape the fires — are painful to watch. They bring Israeli atrocities in Gaza to a new level of unspeakable cruelty and horror.

Webmaster addition: This is the NIO EP9 by Ferrari. No, I am not a car dealer, but Claire and I saw this car on The Grand Tour with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May.

When is interesting about this electric car is that it uses an idea I suggested on this website years ago.

Swappable batteries!

A side panel of the car is removed, allowing a lifting device to extract the depleted battery and insert a fully charged one. The Ferrari drives off while the battery left behind gets charged. Still more work than using a gas pump, but it solves the wait time problem.

Now if this idea was adopted as a standard for all electric cars, then the issue of having to wait while your EV charges is solved.

One by one, the US empire is discrediting all of its own arguments for why it should lead the world. All the violence, tyranny and injustice it claims to be keeping at bay with its globe-dominating leadership is being inflicted by the empire itself, in more and more brazen and egregious ways each year.

The entire premise behind the empire’s containment strategies, military encirclement and cold war brinkmanship with China is that obviously the PRC needs to be stopped from rising and displacing the US as the global leader, and arguments about the need to control Russia and Iran by any means necessary arise from the same premise.

These arguments are accepted as a given by many on the basis that the US is a free and democratic country which promotes liberal values and opposes authoritarianism, so of course it’s better to have the US in charge of world affairs.

But every point which could be used to bolster that argument is being rapidly eroded by the US itself. The US is making the world a much more violent and dangerous place. The US is assaulting freedom by perpetrating and facilitating more and more injustice and authoritarianism. The US is undermining international law by constantly violating it. Every argument that could be made for the merits of US global leadership gets weaker by the day.

As the US backs Israel in routinely committing horrifying massacres in Gaza, it’s clear that the US cannot claim to be making the world a more peaceful and harmonious place.

As the US and its allies recklessly ramp up nuclear brinkmanship with Russia over the failing proxy war in Ukraine, it’s clear that the US cannot claim to be making the world safer

Wouldn’t it be fascinating, actually tremendously heartening, if the man who was supposedly our most divisive politician was the man who ultimately brought our broken country together—former President Donald J. Trump?

People gather for an election rally for former President Donald Trump in Crotona Park in the South Bronx in New Yor City on May 23, 2024. (Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

America is often, justifiably, criticized for having been built to some degree by slavery. It was not alone in that, and it still exists in some places, but America fought its most painful war to abolish the practice. Years later, it enacted the Civil Rights Act, enshrining equality in our laws. Racism was diminishing.

Yet some people have what I called in one of my books a “nostalgia for racism.” They can’t live without it for reasons that range from comfort with old assumptions to the most cynical personal gain.

Consequently, for as long as I have been alive, which is the entire post-World War II era, it has been assumed that minorities voted Democratic, whether to their advantage or not.

So I was gladdened to see, watching on television, the throng of racially mixed Americans gathered in one of my childhood haunts from Yankee Stadium to the Zoo to Van Cortlandt Park—the borough of The Bronx.

No less than one of the most reactionary forces in our culture—identity politics—was under attack in the massive show of support from that mixed-race crowd given former President Trump at his surprisingly large rally in Crotona Park in the southern part of the borough.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Ukraine should hold a presidential election following the expiry of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's five-year term.

Zelenskiy has not faced an election despite the expiry of his term, something he and Kyiv's allies deem the right decision in wartime. Putin said the only legitimate authority in Ukraine now was parliament, and that its head should be given power.

On May 22, 2024, the Geneva International Peace Research Institute (GIPRI), the Collectif de Juristes pour le Respect des Engagements Internationaux de la France (CJRF) and a group of international concerned citizens, submitted a legal brief to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim Khan requesting the opening of an investigation against Ursula von der Leyen for complicity in war crimes and genocide against Palestinian civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including the Gaza Strip.

This legal brief, endorsed by various human rights groups and prominent academics and experts in international criminal law, calls the Prosecutor to initiate investigations on the basis of the information provided against Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen. The latter has been repeatedly informed of violations of international humanitarian law committed in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, through reports from international organizations and foreign governments. This is evidenced by a letter sent to her on February 14, 2024, by the President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, and the then Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar.[1]

Mrs Ursula von der Leyen is responsible for aiding and abetting the commission of crimes and violations of international humanitarian law, within the meaning of Article 25(3)(c) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Mrs von der Leyen enjoys no functional immunity before the International Criminal Court by virtue of Article 27 of the Rome Statute.

In recent years, Americans have been fleeing our largest cities in unprecedented numbers, and many of them have decided to settle down in quiet little towns all over the country.  There are many reasons why this is happening, and I will highlight several of them below.  If this trend continues, what will our major metropolitan areas look like?  Violence, theft, drugs, homelessness and international migration have all risen to crisis levels and are putting a tremendous amount of strain on our core urban areas.  Meanwhile, many small towns are absolutely booming as wave after wave of big city refugees comes pouring in.

Israeli and Egyptian forces exchanged fire across their border on May 26, in what appears to be an isolated incident that has caused an unknown number of casualties. The Egyptian Armed Forces have confirmed they are conducting an investigation into the incident, with the country having taken a neutral position in the ongoing conflict between Israel and various Palestinian militia groups. A number of sources have speculated that Egyptian forces mistook Israeli units for Palestinian militiamen, or else that Egyptian personnel on the ground opened fire without orders. Popular sentiment in Egypt has been strongly supportive of the Palestinian cause in spite of the state’s official neutrality. The incident follows an operation by an Egyptian police officer in June to infiltrate Israel, killing three Israeli soldiers, and comes after repeated warnings from Cairo that it will not tolerate moves by Tel Aviv to displace the Palestinian population of Gaza into the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.

Egypt and Israel historically fought multiple wars from the mid-1940s to the early 1970s, before a new Egyptian administration under President Anwar Sadat realigned the country's foreign policy towards the Western Bloc and into a security partnership with Tel Aviv. Cairo would subsequently provide significant support to Israel’s war effort against its former ally Syria. After the death of President Sadat in 1981 relations cooled considerably, with the following decades widely described in Isreal as a period of “Cold Peace.” The perceived threat of Israeli military operations seeking to force the Gazan population onto Egyptian territory has threatened to again raise tensions between the two states. With the Egyptian Armed Forces today relying overwhelmingly on Western rather than Soviet equipment, however, they remain highly vulnerable to arms embargoes from Israel’s security partners. Western equipment acquired over the past 45 years has also been very heavily downgraded to guarantee an Israeli advantage.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have face growing difficulties employing Western-supplied precision guided weapons systems due to the growing effectiveness of Russian electronic warfare assets, according to interviews with personnel on the frontlines conducted by a number Western media outlets. Some of the most seriously affected munitions types have included Excalibur GPS-guided artillery shells, HIMARS rocked artillery systems, and JDAM precision guided bombs, with the former two in particular having taken a major toll on Russian forces when operating effectively in the past. Speaking to the Washington Post, an unnamed Ukrainian official claimed that the United States had completely ceased deliveries of Excalibur shells six months prior in late 2023 after Russian electronic warfare systems had rendered them ineffective. Despite its prior reputation as a “one shot, one target” weapon, which had led it's deployments to cause considerable concern among the leaders of Russian-aligned militia groups, the paper concluded: “the Excalibur technology in existing versions has lost its potential.” Encounters with Russian jamming were seen to have undermined its reputation.

On May 23 the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) initiated the Joint Sword-2024A combat exercises simulating major military strikes against targets on Taiwan. Separated from the Chinese mainland by a 130 kilometre straight, the island had since 1949 been under the control of the Republic of China government - one of two rival Chinese governments that fought in the country’s 22 year long civil war that was waged on the Chinese mainland from 1927 to 1949. Although both claim to be the sole legitimate authorities over the entire Chinese nation, however, the Taipei government lacks UN recognition and has diplomatic ties with only 11 of the UN’s 193 member states, with its status often compared to that of a non-state actor. Despite the civil war being technically ongoing, relations between Beijing and Taipei improved considerably preceding the election of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to power in the latter in 2015, after which closer security coordination with the Western world was pursued and significant indications were given that Taipei may make an unprecedented shift towards a declaration of independence and formal separation from China.

The Biden administration made clear on Tuesday that the Israeli bombing of a tent camp in Rafah that killed 45 displaced Palestinians, including many women and children, would not change US support for Israel.

Both the White House and the State Department claimed Israeli operations in Rafah are not the “full-scale” assault that the US claims it would oppose even as Israeli tanks push further into the city, and the UN says around one million Palestinians have fled Rafah.

“We still don’t believe that a major ground operation in Rafah is warranted. We still don’t want to see the Israelis, as we say, smash into Rafah with large units over large pieces of territory. We still believe that, and we haven’t seen that at this point,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said. “As a result of this strike on Sunday, I have no policy changes to speak to.”

Spain, Norway, and Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday, a move that doesn’t change the situation on the ground for Palestinians but is meant to pile on the international pressure on Israel.

The three European countries join over 140 nations that already recognize Palestine as a state. The recognition comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the idea of Palestinian statehood in any future scenario.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a televised address that “this is a historic decision that has a single goal, and that is to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.”

A Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters that a Ukrainian drone targeted a radar deep inside Russian territory that’s part of Russia’s early-warning system to detect nuclear missiles. The incident marks the second time within a week that Ukrainian officials reported attacks on a Russian nuclear warning system, known as “Voronezh M” radars.

The source said that the strike targeted a radar near the city of Orsk in Russia’s Orenburg Oblast, which is over 900 miles away from Ukrainian-held territory. The source didn’t say if there was any damage, and Russian media reported a drone was downed in the Orenburg region and that no civilian infrastructure was hit.

On May 22, a Ukrainian drone targeted a Voronezh M radar in Russia’s Krasnodar Oblast at a radar station about 300 miles from Ukrainian-controlled territory. The US-state-funded RFE/RL reported there was damage to the radar site, citing satellite images, although Reuters said it could not verify the imagery.

While the Russian radars can track missiles fired by Ukraine, the primary function of the early-warning system is to detect intercontinental ballistic missiles to determine if Russia is coming under a nuclear attack. Ukraine’s targeting of the systems could lead to a major response from Russia or potentially a miscalculation as the attacks come at a time of unprecedented nuclear tensions between Washington and Moscow.
