"There is no worse mistake in public leadership than to hold out false hopes soon to be swept away. The British people can face peril or misfortune with fortitude and buoyancy, but they bitterly resent being deceived or finding that those responsible for their affairs are themselves dwelling in a fool's paradise." -- Winston Churchill
There is a deepening division on the J6 Committee as staffers turn on Liz Cheney over the final report on the January 6th riot. Angry rhetoric is flying with staffers accusing the Committee of becoming a “Cheney 2024 campaign” while both the Cheney spokesperson and Committee spokesperson lashed out at the staff members as “disgruntled” and producing shoddy or biased work. The underlying issue, however, is important and revealing. The Committee’s color coated teams include a “Blue Team” on the failure to prepare adequately for the riot. That part of the investigation is reportedly being dumped or reduced. Members of the “Green” and “Purple” teams are also reportedly irate.
Cheney was soundly defeated in her primary in Wyoming and will soon leave Congress. She is being pushed by some Democrats as a possible surprise candidate for House Speaker if they could get a few Republican votes. That seems highly unlikely. The Republicans are likely to end up with the identical margin held by the Democrats for the past two years. Alternatively, some Democrats want Cheney to run for president either to dog Donald Trump in the primary debates or to run as an independent to siphon off votes in the general election.
A trans athlete, that couldn’t make it anywhere near the podium on the boy’s track team, not only broke a Seattle high school’s 5000-meter girls’ record, but ended up on the winner’s block in a recent competition.
Millions of Americans preparing to travel during the holiday season will experience record prices for airline tickets. Some Americans forced to depart from their local airports, however, will contend with particularly hefty costs, while others will deal with higher numbers of flight cancellations.
Authorities in Florida said that they stopped a woman from causing a “mass casualty” event on Thanksgiving when they say she tried to drive her SUV through a Turkey Trot course that had thousands of people on it.
Ukrainian troops fire thousands of explosive shells at Russian targets every day, using high-tech cannons supplied by the United States and its allies. But those weapons are burning out after months of overuse, or being damaged or destroyed in combat, and dozens have been taken off the battlefield for repairs, according to U.S. and Ukrainian officials.
One-third of the roughly 350 Western-made howitzers donated to Kyiv are out of action at any given time, according to U.S. defense officials and others familiar with Ukraine’s defense needs.
Swapping out a howitzer’s barrel, which can be 20 feet long and weigh thousands of pounds, is beyond the capability of soldiers in the field and has become a priority for the Pentagon’s European Command, which has set up a repair facility in Poland.
According to a report from Breitbart, a report by The Hill posted on Thanksgiving Day has misleading data about the number of mass shootings that have occurred in the United States in 2022.
From The Hill, nonprofit Gun Violence Archive (GVA) information noted the U.S. had experienced 609 incidents in 2022, qualifying as mass shootings. Four or more people were involved in each shooting, not including the attacker. According to the GVA, the U.S. is on track to be at the 675 incident mark by the end of 2022. The stats for 2021 were 690 across the country, 610 in 2020, and 417 in 2019.
Researchers from GVA said, “The country is three mass shootings away from 2022, being the second-highest yearly total since we began tracking data.” Only two more shootings would put the country at 675 incidents by post-time on Thursday.
The GVA also reported the U.S. had reached violent death by gun at 39,816 so far in 2022. That breaks down to around 21,500 deaths by suicide and over 18,000 deaths attributed to homicides.
GVA researchers also reported, “GVA had never logged a
month of 60+ mass shootings before 2020. It happened five times in 2020, six times in 2021, and now six times again this year.” Researchers also noted an average of 1.68 mass shootings occurred each day in 2022.
Breitbart points out that the GVA includes multiple reasons in their calculations of mass shootings, such as gang violence, double and triple homicides, drive-by shootings, murder-suicide, and firearm occurrences that do not have fatalities.
Breitbart also reports that according to the Rand Corporation, the standard set number used to determine mass shootings by the FBI’s 1980s definition of a mass murderer is someone who “kills four or more people in a
single incident (not including himself).” This definition means that a “mass shooting” involves a single incident by a single gunman resulting in the death of four or more people.
The 2013 definition was altered slightly by the U.S. Congress when it defined a mass killing as a single incident resulting in the death of three or more people.
Regardless of which definition is used, “four or more deaths” or “three or more people dead,” Breitbart notes either definition does not agree with the claim of 600+ expected “mass shootings” in 2022 reported by GVA.
