WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has reportedly struck a deal with the Biden administration to plead guilty to a felony charge stemming from his role in one of the largest breaches of classified U.S. government material in history.

The Biden Department of Justice will seek a 62-month prison sentence for Assange, the same amount of time that he was imprisoned in the U.K. while he fought extradition charges, CNN reported. The plea deal allows the five years that he has served in the U.K. to count as time served, thus allowing him to avoid spending time in a U.S. prison.

He would be allowed to return immediately to his home country of Australia, the report said.

Assange was indicted by a Virginia federal grand jury in 2019 on more than a dozen charges that alleged he illegally obtained and disseminated classified information about U.S. Military operations overseas. He faced more than 175 years in prison.

He will instead appear in U.S. federal court in the Mariana Islands, where he will plead guilty to violating the Espionage Act.]

We are closer to the unthinkable than we have ever been, but I have noticed that concern about global war has fallen to an exceedingly low level in the western world. Many people are just having a good old time as if they didn’t have a care in the world, and meanwhile global leaders on all sides are dragging us to the brink of destruction. During World War III, more people could die than in all of the other wars that have ever been fought in human history combined. Unfortunately, only a very small fraction of the population is actively trying to prevent such a cataclysm. By the time most of the population finally wakes up, it may be too late.

Russian ransomware group LockBit claims it has breached the U.S. Federal Reserve and is threatening to release 33 terabytes of sensitive data, including "Americans' banking secrets," on Tuesday. "33 terabytes of juicy banking information containing Americans' banking secrets," LockBit wrote Sunday on its data leak site. "You better hire another negotiator within 48 hours, and fire this clinical idiot who values Americans' bank secrecy at $50,000," the group added. While the Federal Reserve has not confirmed the hack, a number of cybersecurity experts are discounting LockBit's claims, saying there are no published samples of the stolen data.

According to NASA: "The crew is not pressed for time to leave the station since there are plenty of supplies in orbit, and the station’s schedule is relatively open through mid-August." The Starliner will need to depart the ISS before August without some additional engineering analysis. During the post-docking news conference, Steve Stich, NASA's Commercial Crew Program manager, gave a figure of 45 days for the docked duration, meaning a docking would have to occur during the latter half of July at the very latest.

The UK government has been accused of blowing £174 million ($220 million) on "external advice" for a new radio system for the armed forces that has been beset by delays and cancelled contracts. A new radio tactical communications system is being procured for the British Army under the program name Morpheus. It was planned to enter service in 2025 to replace the current Bowman radio technology, which is now more than 20 years old. But Bowman has had to be upgraded and extended several times because of delays to Morpheus, and the project is now unlikely to be rolled out until early in the next decade.

There are early indications of active attacks targeting end-of-life Zyxel NAS boxes just a few weeks after details of three critical vulnerabilities were made public. The Shadowserver Foundation, an internet security organization partnered with many of the world's top security agencies and vendors, said its scanners started beeping on Friday as it continues to monitor CVE-2024-29973. It observed multiple remote command execution attempts "by a Mirai-like botnet" and advised owners of affected Zyxel NAS devices to actively search for signs of compromise, especially if the patches weren't applied immediately. It also might be a good idea to just rip and replace the kit if it is still running, given that it's fairly uncommon for vendors to release security updates for devices that have already reached their end of support.

A Florida homeowner has sued NASA for more than $80,000 in compensation after debris from the International Space Station smashed a hole in his roof. Alejandro Otero is understandably upset that the plummeting trash crashed into his family's house on March 8. According to his attorney Mica Nguyen Worthy, nobody was injured, and only Otero's son Daniel was home at the time. The debris "left a sizable hole from the roof through the sub-flooring," the father's legal team said at the end of last week.

The bodies of around 20 workers have been found at a South Korean lithium battery factory after a massive blaze, local media reports, with firefighters saying they were still searching the building. Horrifying pictures show a huge column of smoke and flames rising high into the sky as the inferno ripped through the plant in Hwaseong, just south of the capital Seoul. Over 100 people were working in the factory when workers heard a series of explosions from the second floor, where lithium-ion batteries are inspected and packaged, firefighter Kim Jin-young told media.
