Thought for the day

"The first panacea of a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permeant ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists." -- Ernest Hemingway

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday he hopes for "normalisation" of ties between rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan who pledged not to resort to force in their territorial dispute after tripartite talks, reasserting Moscow's role as Caucasus powerbroker.

The summit was held as Western engagement grows in the volatile Caucasus region, where Russia – distracted by its war in Ukraine – is palpably losing influence after decades of domination.

The initiative comes a month after the worst clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan since their war in 2020.

"It was a very useful meeting that created a very good atmosphere for possible future agreements," the Russian president told journalists.

"Russia will do everything to find a definitive and comprehensive settlement" of the conflict, he said. "It is in everyone's interest to normalise relations.

Prussian Major General Carl von Clausewitz famously drew on his own experience in the Napoleonic Wars to examine war as a political phenomenon. In his 1832 book “On War” he provided a frequently quoted pithy summary of war versus peace, writing in terms of politico-military strategy that “War is a mere continuation of politics by other means.” In other words, war-making is a tool provided to statesmen to achieve a nation’s political objectives when all else fails.

One can reject the ultimate amorality of Clausewitz’s thinking about war while also recognizing that some nations have historically speaking exploited war-making as a tool for physical expansion and the appropriation of foreigners’ resources. As far back as the Roman Republic, the country’s elected leaders doubled as heads of its consular armies, which were expected to go out each spring to expand the imperium. More recently, Britain notably engaged in almost constant colonial wars over the course of centuries to establish what was to become history’s largest empire.

The Air Force is allowing unvaccinated instructor pilots to return to the air after barring them from flight this summer, the service confirmed Oct. 28.

Maj. Gen. Phillip Stewart, the head of 19th Air Force, said Oct. 25 that it is “in the best interest of the Air Force” for instructors to resume their regular in-flight duties until further notice, according to a memo obtained by Air Force Times.

It sounds like the authors are next going to reveal the Big Secret: that Harvard can’t get rid of affirmative action because African-Americans are ever increasingly being buried by Asians, who are growing both in quantity and quality of test scores and grades. Without society continuing to give blacks a big fat thumb on the scale forever, blacks would more or less vanish from elite academia and be replaced by countless Asians.

The chance that an individual Asian will score 1400 to the maximum of 1600 on the SAT appears to be about two dozen times greater than an individual black will score that high. The white to black gap, in contrast, is only about 7 to 1.

You could make the argument that in 2003 when Sandra Day O’Connor put a 25 year time limit on affirmative action being allowed to violate “equal protection of the laws,” she was being naive, both about the genetics of racial differences in performance but most of all about the Asian Crush that was much less noticeable 19 years ago.

But then Bollinger and Stone chicken out and revert to the usual Blame Whitey rhetoric.

“The Biden administration’s Nuclear Posture Review is, at heart, a terrifying document. It not only keeps the world on a path of increasing nuclear risk, in many ways it increases that risk. Citing rising threats from Russia and China, it argues that the only viable U.S. response is to rebuild the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal, maintain an array of dangerous Cold War-era nuclear policies, and threaten the first use of nuclear weapons in a variety of scenarios.” Stephen Young, Union of Concerned Scientists

Maybe you’re one of the millions of people who think the US would never use its nuclear weapons unless the threat of a nuclear attack was imminent.

Well, you’d be wrong, because according to the recently-released Nuclear Posture Review, the bar for using nukes has been significantly lowered. The new standard reads like this: (nukes can be used) “in extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests of the United States or its allies and partners.”

“Defend the vital interests of the United States or its allies”??

That’s a pretty broad net, isn’t it? That could include anything from a serious threat to national security to an ordinary economic competitor. And that loosy-goosy definition appears to be just what the authors were looking for.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Monday said the Kiev regime's ongoing attacks on the critical infrastructure of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant threaten Europe with a man-made disaster and casualties.

"The Kiev regime does not give up its plans to regain control of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and carries out attacks against its critical infrastructure, threatening Europe with a man-made disaster and the deaths of thousands of civilians," the diplomat said in a statement.

"We are calling on the regime of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky and its Western sponsors to stop reckless provocations against the Zaporozhye NPP that could cause a disaster and the most serious consequences," the diplomat said.

Residents of the Moldovan town of Ocnita have reported a series of powerful explosions coming from a Ukrainian pumped-storage hydroelectric plant on the Dniester River, located 25 kilometers from the town.

The Komsomolskaya Pravda in Moldova newspaper published photos and videos provided by witnesses from border settlements, which show a large plume of smoke rising from the area.

Border crossings in Otaci, Larga, Ungur and Briceni, located along the northern part of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, suspended operations after air raid sirens had gone off in Ukraine.

Russia started to carry out strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure facilities on October 10, two days after a terrorist attack on the Crimean Bridge, which, according to the Russian authorities, had been masterminded by Ukrainian intelligence agencies. Since then, air raid sirens continue to sound in Ukraine every day. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on October 18 that 30% of the country’s power plants had been destroyed, which had led to large-scale power outages.

The problem of refugees from the Ukraine, which Kiev is trying to keep quiet, is makes itself more and more evident. Not only the Russian, but even the foreign media are reporting it. According to the UN, from the beginning and Euromaidan which had as its sequel, the so-called "Anti-terrorist” operations carried out by Ukrainian security forces in the territory of east Ukraine more than 10,000 people have already left (1).

Kiev earlier told horror stories about refugees from the Crimea, fleeing the Russian "aggression", but no refugees have appeared. Even though, following orders from the top, pickets took up positions in Ukrainian cities to protect future victims from Russian tyranny, The only tangible case relating to the mass flow of people from the Crimea to the mainland territory of Ukraine, was the arrival of several Crimean Tatar families to Lviv, from where they were later moved on to Poland.

However, according to the representatives of the Crimean Tatar community, many of the refugees leaving the peninsula did so under the guise of members of the extremist organization "Hizb ut-Tahrir" together with their wives and children (2). The activities of this organization in Ukraine were completely legal, but with the transition of the Crimea to Russian jurisdiction, freedom of these Islamist outlaws came to an end.

No other refugees wishing to take refuge under the wing of Kiev in the face of the "Russian occupation" were found. However, there were plenty enough people fleeing from the new Kiev authorities and their nationalist right-wing organizations.

European Union and NATO countries have taken in millions of Ukrainian refugees since the start of the Russian military operation there in February. But recent reports suggest the guests have outstayed their welcome in countries unready to host so many.

Europeans are increasingly tiring of their Ukrainian refugee guests — many in their own homes — as the conflict enters its ninth month.

Now Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's government has told them not to come back soon, for fear of overloading the electrical network crippled by Russian missile and drone strikes.

Nearly eight million Ukrainians have fled the country since February 24, most of them to European Union (EU) and NATO member states that support the Kiev regime's attacks on the people of the eastern Donbass region, which recently voted to join the Russian Federation.

But why is "the Europe of solidarity" turning its back on the nation that leaders wanted to welcome into its economic and military blocs?

The Mirotvorets website labeled Avigdor Lieberman “Russia’s agent of influence,” who took part in acts of “humanitarian aggression” against Ukraine

Israeli finance minister, Avigdor Lieberman has been added to the database of the “enemies of Ukraine” on the controversial Mirotvorets website on Sunday.

The authors of the site, which is believed to have links to the Ukrainian security services, described Lieberman as “Russia’s agent of influence,” who had been manipulating publicly significant information in favor of Moscow. They also blamed him for taking part in acts of “humanitarian aggression” against Ukraine.

The Kremlin does not need proof from the Russian Defense Ministry of Britain's involvement in the attack on Black Sea Fleet ships and Nord Stream pipelines, since the Defense Ministry is "more than an official source," Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media on Monday.

The journalists asked him whether the Defense Ministry had presented evidence to the Kremlin of Britain’s involvement in the attack on ships of the Black Sea Fleet on October 29 and the Nord Stream pipelines.

"It is enough for everyone to have a statement from the Defense Ministry, which, relying on the information, the data that can be collected, states this [about the attack]," the Kremlin spokesman said, adding that the Defense Ministry is "more than an official source that deserves absolute trust."

"The very wording [of the question] whether it presented evidence to the Kremlin is wrong. It is not customary for us to provide evidence to each other within one state," Peskov explained.

Dozens of public facilities used by Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries in the city of Zaporozhye have been left without power after a strike on a substation near the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, Chairman of the We Stand With Russia public movement Vladimir Rogov said on Monday.

"Targeted strikes on a substation complex near the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station were carried out at 9:00 am," he told the Zvezda TV channel. "Downtown was left without electricity, as well as several dozen public facilities where Zelensky’s militants are staying and where they store ammunition and equipment, including some locations where Foreign Legion militants are stationed," Rogov added.

"Power supply is crucial in terms of convenience and living conditions for militants deployed to the city. The level of their combat readiness is sharply declining because the level of comfort and other things are changing dramatically," the activist noted.

The flotilla is reportedly led by the new USS Gerald Ford supercarrier, now on its first deployment US carrier strike group, headed by supercarrier USS Gerald Ford. © US Navy

A US carrier strike group, led by new supercarrier USS Gerald Ford, is expected to anchor near Portsmouth in southern England in mid-November, the UK Defense Journal reported on Sunday.

The exact date of the flotilla’s arrival, which includes seven other warships, has not been announced publicly, the outlet noted. Releasing such data now “might not be the best idea from a security point of view,” it added.

Some of the American vessels will dock at the Royal Navy’s Portsmouth naval base, while the USS Gerald Ford will have to anchor outside, at the roadstead in the Spithead area, due to its size, according to the outlet.

The highly paid political class in charge of each of the UK’s three major political parties detests, despises, distrusts and seeks to discard their own party membership.

The Conservative, Labour and SNP elite all view their party members as a potential embarrassment.

The Tory Party MP’s appear to have worked out how to get rid of Truss , the hopeless leader the membership lumbered them with, and to put in place a replacement – crucially – while minimising their own rules on including a vote of party members in the process.

All Candidates will require 100 MP nominations to stand – which should eliminate member favourites Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch. This makes it impossible for there to be more than three candidates nominated, as there are under 400 Tory MPs. MPs will then hold one or two rounds of voting until a winner is announced.

Only then will the candidates be put to the membership, with information on who the MPs chose. It is plain there will be huge pressure on  candidates to step down after the MPs’ vote, so the election does not go to the membership at all.

While Europe continues the unvarnished hypocrisy of pretending it is imposing draconian sanctions against Russian oil and gas, when instead it is merely buying the country's natural resources via such middlemen as India and China (an exercise in virtue signaling that costs it a 20% mark-up to Russian prices), less than a year since the start of the Ukraine war, some countries have had enough of pretending.

Today, the Japanese government decided to officially screw the sanctions, and remain involved in the (formerly Exxon-led) Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project in Russia, as it seeks a stable supply of energy (who doesn't) despite international sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, the Nikkei reported.

ExxonMobil, which held a 30% stake in Sakhalin-1, announced in March that it would withdraw from the project. But after vacillating for more than half a year, Japan decided not to follow in Exxon's footsteps.

Meanwhile, Russia set up a new company to take over the project under a presidential decree that has in effect forced investors to choose sides. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is a stakeholder in Tokyo-based Sakhalin Oil and Gas Development -- which owns 30% of Sakhalin-1's current operator - along with other investors including Itochu, Japan Petroleum Exploration and Marubeni.

The Japanese consortium will make a final decision on whether to stay invested in the project after discussions with other stakeholders.

A potentially deadly new strain of COVID has been created in a University lab in London, according to a report.

The Daily Mail reports that researchers at Imperial College London have hybridised the original Wuhan strain of the disease with both the Omicron or Delta variants separately.

The College is yet to reveal how effective the strain they have created is, and has denied that the work constitutes gain of function, the process now widely believed to have been responsible for the original strain in Wuhan.

Molecular biology expert Dr. Richard Ebright warned that the new mutant strain, which was injected into hamsters in London, “is insanity, both in terms of the redundancy and waste,” and that it has zero “foreseeable practical applications.”

While many parts of Europe, from Germany and France to the UK, enjoy unseasonably warm weather, a new three-month forecast indicates the increasing possibility that 'Old Man Winter' is set to move in.

Bloomberg reports UK's Met Office's three-month outlook shows a colder-than-normal winter is ahead. The forecast said there's a 25% chance the season will be cold, a 60% chance of it being around average, and 15% of it being mild.

"The likelihood of a colder three-month period overall is slightly greater than normal," the forecasts said.

Warm weather has been an important factor in plunging natural gas prices across Europe. Dutch natural gas futures, Europe's benchmark, have fallen more than 70% since late August to 92.50 euros per megawatt-hour.

We wrote a note a little more than a week ago titled "Germany May Stave Off Worst Of Energy Crisis As Mild Temps Forecast Through Mid-November."

However, abnormally warm weather is set to dissipate by mid-November across North West Europe and be more in line with 30-year averages.

As we approach the third year of the ‘Covid Crisis’, the once unassailable Covid Story – reported and repeated by politicians, public health mandarins and all mainstream media – has been replaced by contradictions and inconsistencies.

The original Covid Story narrated by health ‘experts’ and government officials told of a particularly virulent pathogen which besieged the planet in 2020 and spread like wildfire– terrorizing, infecting, and killing people en masse.

It was the story of a “pandemic level event” in which people were told to stay indoors, entire sectors of society were forced to shut down and humans were told to do everything possible to avoid contact with one another.

It was a story of closed down schools, closed down businesses, closed down churches and soon-to-be overwhelmed hospitals.

In later chapters the Covid Story morphed from ironclad truths, “Follow the science”, to ever changing definitions, “The science evolves.” Countless aspects of the “official” narrative changed overnight. Gradually the tale became fraught with pages of questionable statistics and ever shifting storylines.

What was one to make of all of these contradictions and ministerial mutations?

Recently noted as an opponent of vaccine and mask mandates, new Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is breaking previously established ties with the World Economic Forum, which has been deeply involved in a “health consulting agreement” revolving around the province's covid response.

“I find it distasteful when billionaires brag about how much control they have over political leaders,” Smith said at a news conference Monday after her new cabinet was sworn in. “That is offensive … the people who should be directing government are the people who vote for them.”

The United Conservative Party premier said she is in lockstep with federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who has stated he and his caucus will having nothing to do with the World Economic Forum.  Earlier this month, on her first day as premier, Smith stated that people not vaccinated against covid are the most discriminated group she has seen in her lifetime.

The FBI is asking a U.S. court to reverse its order that it produce information from Seth Rich’s laptop computer.

If the court does not, the bureau wants 66 years to produce the information.

Rich was a Democratic National Committee staffer when he was killed on a street in Washington in mid-2016. No person has ever been arrested in connection to the murder.

U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant, an Obama appointee, ruled in September that the bureau must hand over information from the computer to Brian Huddleston, a Texas man who filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the info.

The FBI’s assertion that the privacy interest Rich’s family members hold outweighed the public interest was rejected by Mazzant, who noted the bureau cited no relevant case law supporting the argument.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi lashed out over US export curbs in a Sunday phone call with his US counterpart Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The tense call underscored that significant obstacles remain as the two sides continue preparing for a potential Biden and Xi Jinping face-to-face meeting next month.

"The U.S. side should stop its containment and suppression of China and not create new obstacles to bilateral relations," Wang said, base on a foreign ministry statement. "The US side introduced new export controls against China, restricting investments in China, seriously violating free-trade principles and seriously harming China's legitimate rights and interests, which must be corrected."

THE FLAGSHIP PRO-ISRAEL lobby group AIPAC is intervening in a race for a House seat that’s growing uncomfortably close for Democrats in deep-blue Pittsburgh. And, with its super PAC’s first attack ads of the 2022 general election, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee is going after a familiar target: Pennsylvania state Rep. Summer Lee, a would-be member of the growing progressive Squad in Congress.

After spending close to $3 million and failing to defeat Lee during Pittsburgh’s Democratic congressional primary in May, the United Democracy Project, the political action committee for AIPAC, is again trying its hand at defeating Lee’s insurgent campaign. On Saturday, UDP dropped just under $80,000 on new mail ads against Lee’s campaign, and more than $600,000 of new television ads were announced on Monday.

UDP made the ad purchase after conducting an independent internal poll that showed a tight race, spokesperson Patrick Dorton told The Intercept. He declined to share the poll but said it showed a “very competitive race.”

As Elon Musk moved through the final steps of acquiring Twitter, the co-founder of the social media giant, Jack Dorsey, unveiled that he plans to eventually launch a new social media platform, called Bluesky Social, and its testing is getting underway.

On Tuesday, just two days before Musk officially acquired Twitter, Dorsey announced that Bluesky Social, a “blockchain-base” social media platform, was beginning testing and getting closer to a public launch, Business Insider reported.

Bluesky was actually founded back in 2019 as a kind of research platform for making social media less centralized. It was meant to be an “open and decentralized” standard for social media, the Independent reported.
