"In 1960, the USSR accused the U.S. of running an aerial spying program over its territory. Our government denied it to the American people, only admitting it when confronted with the captured U-2 pilot Gary Powers. Americans were genuinely shocked that their government would lie to them. Today the lying has become so routine that people are no longer shocked. There can be no true democracy when government manipulates the people with spin, hype, propaganda, phony 'leaks,' and outright lies." -- Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has invited a wave of criticism and mockery after he claimed his state is the 'national model' for tackling homelessness

The Democrat, 56, made the remarks as he announced a $3.3 billion fund for California counties to tackle rampant homelessness, including a mental health initiative he pushed for.

'The state of California saw a decline in veteran's homelessness,' he said on Tuesday. 'We have a national model.'

Newsom appeared to be citing California's 30 percent drop in veteran homelessness over the past 12 years, despite a 2023 federal report finding that the state holds 28 percent of the nation's total number of unhoused people.

That figure marked a 40 percent increase from the rate it was at five years ago, reports CalMatters

Ukrainian officials have asked NATO countries to send troops to Ukraine to help train 150,000 new recruits, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

The report said NATO countries are “inching closer” to sending trainers, which would mark a significant escalation and risk direct war with Russia. A small number of NATO special operations forces have been inside Ukraine — 97 as of March 2023 — but an open deployment to train a large number of Ukrainian troops would take things to another level.

The US and NATO had been training Ukrainian troops inside Ukraine before Russia’s February 2022 invasion. Since then, the training has been held in Germany and other parts of Europe, but Kyiv wants to shift it back inside Ukraine so the Ukrainian recruits can be quickly deployed to the frontlines. So far, the US has not agreed to the request, but it appears Washington is considering it.

The Times cited a US official who said one possibility could be to train Ukrainian troops in Lviv, a western Ukrainian city that’s near the Polish border. Russia has bombed Lviv throughout the war, including strikes a few weeks ago that targeted energy infrastructure.

In comments on Thursday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown said a NATO training deployment was an inevitability but appeared to rule it out for now. “We’ll get there eventually, over time,” he told reporters while on his way to Brussels. He said that if they were sent now, it would put “a bunch of NATO trainers at risk” and that Ukraine would have to choose whether to use air defenses to protect them or infrastructure near the frontlines.

Claire's Observations:  Does anyone else beside me, reading this, remember how the Vietnam War became truly "hot" for our military?!?  By the sending of US advisors/trainers to South Vietnam.  Should this happen in Ukraine, Russia will most probably respond by killing these NATO "advisors" just as quickly and efficiently as they can.  And suddenly, what has been a "proxy regional war" between the US and Russia in Ukraine, becomes a world war.

And Chairman General Brown, forgive me, but does it mean, when you say, "We'll get there eventually, over time"?!?  What does that even mean, looking at the situation on the ground right now?!?  The one element that NATO and the West does NOT have here, is time.

And please, sir, tell us:what "front lines" does Ukraine have, the the Russians have not been able to stop out of existence here?!?  Karkhiv, Ukraine's second largest city, is nearly gone, and Russians were able to simply "walk through" Ukrainian "front lines"  with little to no resistance, because the money sent to "defend" Karkhiv, wound up in "officials' pockets".

So sir, the operative question here is, how long before Kiev itself is taken by the Russians?!?  I don't know what the Vegas odds on this, but I am betting, if the situation doesn't immediately  and radically improve  for Ukrainian troops, this will possibly happen right around the end of this summer, and right before US elections in November, if those elections are actually being held this year.

They're the wonders of the ancient world that still leave scientists scratching their heads today.

Now, an important part of the mystery of the Egyptian pyramids may have been solved.

Archaeologists have discovered that the famous structures could have been built along a long-lost branch of the river Nile.

And it could help explain why they now seem to be situated in a narrow, inhospitable desert strip.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina Wilmington studied satellite imagery to find the possible location of a former river branch running along the foothills of the Western Desert Plateau, very near to the pyramids.

Some 84 percent of deadly measles cases in a recent major outbreak at a migrant center in Chicago are linked to Venezuelan immigrants, a new CDC report shows.

New information reveals that the spate of 57 cases at the Pilsen migrant shelter can be traced back to a one year-old boy who had only received one of the two vital vaccines.

The majority of the cases — 72 percent — were among unvaccinated people, the CDC said.

The report cites overcrowding at the center for the rampant spread, with 500 people said to be crammed into a single room.

Cohen's lies are piling up

Michael Cohen has lied. A lot. And lawyer Todd Blanche has been getting him to admit it himself. He lied to Robert Mueller. He lied to a congressional committee about a Moscow tower he was exploring while working for Trump. He even lied to a judge when he was guilty to a trio of crimes that sent him to prison. The prosecution has tried to get ahead with some of these during direct testimony, but jurors keeping score may be shocked by the numbers.

Texts with daughter point to trail of resentment

Anyone who has travelled in New York and D.C. political circles knows what it’s like to score a top invite – or to be left on the curb feeling like a has-been. Cohen's texts with his daughter revealed complaints about having trouble getting tickets to the Trump inauguration, after helping guide two campaigns.

Judge Merchan is looking for the exits

Judge Merchan told lawyers to be ready for summary arguments as soon as Tuesday. That comes despite Todd Blanche refusing to rule out testimony by former President Trump himself. He's also gaming out how to avoid long breaks in the rythm of the trial, a sign he may have eyes on completion before Memorial day.

Webmaster addition: If Merchan is pushing for an early finish, it means he knows the case is lost and wants it buried and forgotten by election day.

Vice President Kamala Harris has joked she may return to California to run for governor if she and President Joe Biden lose the 2024 election, according to a new report.

Politico cites two people familiar with the Harris’ comments, but the vice president’s office predictably denied the report.

‘That did not happen,’ Harris spokesperson Kirsten Allen said. ‘This November, the vice president will be preparing to be inaugurated for the second term of the Biden-Harris administration.’

The race to succeed current California governor Gavin Newsom will take place in 2026, but there is no clear Democratic successor in place.

According to testimony before Congress on Wednesday by Robert Costello, a former federal prosecutor, Michael Cohen confessed to having “nothing truthful” showing former President Donald Trump’s guilt in any crime. Costello represented Cohen when he was under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

“I swear to God Bob I don’t have anything on Donald Trump” Costello quoted Cohen as telling him repeatedly. This contradicts claims Cohen made on the witness stand during Trump’s ongoing Manhattan trial.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday told reporters that the Justice Department does not need to comply with a congressional subpoena because the DOJ is “a fundamental institution of our democracy.”

A visibly rattled Garland made the statements during a press conference to reporters after Joe Biden asserted executive privilege over the audio of his interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur.

Merrick Garland was forced to go on defense for the first time as two GOP-led House Committees vote to hold him in contempt of Congress.

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday voted to hold Garland in contempt and the House Oversight Committee will hold a contempt vote later this evening.

Garland told reporters that the congressional subpoena was ‘not legitimate’ and would harm the DOJ’s ability to successfully pursue sensitive investigations.

On the cause of and progress of the war in Ukraine, RT cited Fico as saying the following:

  • “I say it loud and clear and will do so: The war in Ukraine didn’t start yesterday or last year. It began in 2014 when the Ukrainian Nazis and fascists started to murder Russian citizens in Donbass and Lugansk.”
  • “Russia completely controls the occupied territories militarily, Ukraine is not capable of any meaningful military counter-offensive, [and] it has become completely dependent on financial aid from the West with unforeseeable consequences for Ukrainians in the years to come.”

In regards to funding for Ukraine, Fico is on the record stating:

  • “If the strategy is to continue to pour money there, €1.5 billion per month without any result, and we have to cut our own resources? After all, we have huge problems, and public money is in a difficult state.”
  • “I will support zero military aid to Ukraine… An immediate halt to military operations is the best solution we have for Ukraine. The EU should change from an arms supplier to a peacemaker.”

Established in 1944, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) supports countries’ economic growth by providing financial aid and guidance on policies to enhance stability, productivity, and job opportunities.

Countries seek loans from the IMF to address economic crises, stabilize their currencies, implement structural reforms, and alleviate balance of payments difficulties.

In this graphic, Visual Capitalist's Bruno Venditti visualizes the 10 countries most indebted to the fund.

Methodology

We compiled this ranking using the International Monetary Fund’s data on Total IMF Credit Outstanding. We selected the latest debt data for each country, accurate as of April 29, 2024.

Argentina Tops the Rank

Argentina’s debt to the IMF is equivalent to 5.3% of the country’s GDP. In total, the country owns more than $32 billion.

A G20 member and major grain exporter, the country’s history of debt trouble dates back to the late 1890s when it defaulted after contracting debts to modernize the capital, Buenos Aires. It has already been bailed out over 20 times in the last six decades by the IMF.

Five of the 10 most indebted countries are in Africa, while three are in South America.

The only European country on our list, Ukraine has relied on international support amidst the conflict with Russia. It is estimated that Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country caused the loss of a third of the country’s economy. The country owes $9 billion to the IMF.

In total, almost 100 countries owe money to the IMF, and the grand total of all of these debts is $111 billion. The above countries (top 10) account for about 69% of these debts.

A man who was discharged from the Marine Corps on Friday after serving for less than a year was arrested Monday for making online threats to kill white people.

Former Pfc. Joshua Cobb, 23, of Trenton, New Jersey, was charged via complaint with one count of transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey said in a news release.

Records of the alleged threats start in December 2022, when a social media user with an IP address linked to Cobb’s residence in New Jersey declared he was planning to “erase” white people in a shooting, according to the complaint.

Another day, another foreign policy disaster from the failed Biden regime. This time around, inept Secretary of State Antony Blinken is praying to whatever “god” will listen to him at this point, hoping the American people don’t discover that Ukrainian officials in Kharkiv have been using US tax dollars to get rich quick by investing in fake companies.

Well, tough luck, Blinky; we’re about to blow the lid off of it…

Now, if the name of that town rings a bell, it’s likely due to recent reports of Russians entering the city and taking it over with barely a struggle. Why, you ask? It’s because officials pocketed the money meant for “defense” and used it to line their own pockets.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is at odds with his own defense minister Yoav Gallant after Gallant said in a Wednesday televised address that the Israeli leader must take "tough decisions" on Gaza's 'day after' the war ends. Gallant came out very strongly against any scenario that leaves Israel in charge of overseeing the Gaza Strip. He called for advancing non-Hamas Palestinian governance, which would of course mean the Palestinian Authority (PA, which is made up primarily of Fatah), along with international backing.

Times of Israel highlighted that "The public comments, seen as the most direct political challenge to Netanyahu from within his government since the start of the war, sparked an angry backlash among members of the coalition, who urged Netanyahu to fire the defense minister."

What made matters worse is that just a few hours prior to Gallant issuing his direct challenge, Netanyahu asserted publicly that any discussions of the "day after" Hamas in Gaza are meaningless until the terror group is defeated.

In response to Gallant, Netanyahu issued televised remarks wherein he laid out that he's "not prepared to switch from Hamastan to Fatahstan" - in reference to the PA which currently governs the West Bank, and represents the older era of Palestinian resistance to Israel.

France had promised to send troops to New Caledonia after a state of emergency was declared in the French Island Territory amid violent mass riots — triggered by Paris-backed changes to local voting rights.

The French government has deployed military units to New Caledonia amid continuing civil unrest in the French South Pacific territory.

The troops will back up police efforts to secure ports and the main airport in the capital. French President Emmanuel Macron has declared a state of emergency to last at least 12 days.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has announced the decision to send an additional 1,000 gendarmes to New Caledonia to suppress protests, Report informs referring to TASS.

“1,000 additional gendarmes will be sent to the site,” Attal said after a meeting of the Defense Council of the Republic.

There are already about 1,700 law enforcement officers on the territory of New Caledonia.

He added that the situation “remains extremely tense.”

New Caledonia’s main airports, Nouméa La Tontouta and Nouméa Magenta, were closed, and all flights were canceled following intense rioting in Nouméa and nearby townships. The unrest, which erupted over proposed constitutional reforms, prompted the imposition of an island-wide curfew after rioters set vehicles and buildings on fire on the night of May 13.

Both airports, which serve as critical hubs for international and domestic flights, issued closure notices effective May 14. Aircalin (SB) managed to operate a post-midnight flight to Singapore Changi on May 14, but subsequently canceled later flights to destinations such as Sydney, Auckland, and Nadi. The airline has also preemptively canceled flights for May 15 and 16 due to the ongoing unrest.

Air Calédonie (TY), primarily operating domestic flights from Nouméa Magenta, canceled routes to Lifou, Maré, Île des Pins, and Ouvéa. Air Loyauté, another carrier at Nouméa Magenta, reported no scheduled flights until May 15.

This closure compounds the challenges faced by the aviation sector in the Southwest Pacific, already reeling from Air Vanuatu’s recent entry into voluntary administration and the cessation of its international services. This development led Aircalin to terminate its codeshare agreement with Air Vanuatu, further affecting regional connectivity.

Faced with the serious riots shaking New Caledonia, the government took advantage of the state of emergency declared to block TikTok on the island. This is an unprecedented measure in France and Europe.

The High Commissioner on the French Pacific territory, Mr. Louis le Franc, has purely and simply banned TikTok since Wednesday evening, May 15, 2024 throughout New Caledonia. The decision is historic, unprecedented in France and probably in the European Union, even if it is implemented among other measures intended to alleviate the serious violence which has hit the island for several days. However, the legality of this censorship raises questions.

A blocking of TikTok which sounds like a historic first in France for a social network

Faced with the clashes which caused the death of four people, including a young 22-year-old gendarme, the government therefore imposed a blockade of TikTok in New Caledonia. The ban, notably permitted thanks to the state of emergency, is in force and applies to all smartphones circulating on the island.

Obviously, the measure divides, even if the application of the ByteDance group is targeted because it allegedly allowed calls for violence and messages of hatred to pass through, a criticism that was already made against it during the riots that occurred in France following of the death of Nahel Merzouk, in the summer of 2023. Emmanuel Macron had already put forward the idea of blocking social networks.

The US, EU and NATO have slammed the newly-passed foreign agents law in Georgia, while the foreign ministers of Iceland, Lithuania and Estonia took part in protest rallies against the legislation in Tbilisi. Sputnik's pundits called these actions foreign meddling in Georgia's affairs.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis expressed support for the "European" aspirations of Georgian protesters at a protest rally in Tbilisi on May 15.

"In a democracy, the government owes it to you, the Georgian people, to follow the direction your moral compass is showing," Landsbergis told the crowd. "I am speaking out because I am... on the side of a European Georgia."

But Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the secretary-general of the ruling Georgian Dream party, called their actions hostile and aimed at dividing Georgian society.

"This is not friendship, this is enmity, this is an attempt to deepen polarization in our country," Kaladze told the Rustavi 2 TV channel. "Could you imagine our minister of foreign affairs going to Yerevan and speaking at an [Armenian] opposition rally?"

It appears the left’s schemes to derail and defund the Trump campaign are failing. Public opinion seems to be that the criminal trials are politically motivated. Attempts at preventing Trump from campaigning and fundraising have equally faltered.

Trump has hosted huge events and rallies, even while being shackled to the New York trial. He has even pulled out big Republican donors to flood his war chest.

Now, an unlikely figure is coming out in support of Donald Trump’s campaign. He announced a private fundraising event at his home. And he is pulling for supporters in what has long been considered a liberal stronghold. This should have Biden very worried.

From The Post Millennial:
Silicon Valley’s David Sacks is set to host a fundraiser for GOP frontrunner and former president Donald Trump at his Pacific Heights home Broadcliff. The June 6 fundraiser…

The fundraiser is something of a “show of force” for Sacks, per Puck, which predicts that the crypto industry will likely turn out in numbers. This as Politico reports that Trump’s stance on crypto has Dems running scared.

Trump is “poised to be the first major party nominee to court cryptocurrency traders,” Politico recently reported. “It’s leaving some Democrats feeling uneasy.”

Russia has hit back at the UK's latest diplomatic moves against Moscow, on Thursday ordering the expulsion of the British defense attache from the country.

"The defense attaché at the British Embassy in Moscow, A. T. Coghill, has been declared persona non grata. He must leave the territory of the Russian Federation within a week," Russia's foreign ministry said.

UK Embassy, Moscow, via TASS

It follows the UK first expelling Moscow's defense attache from British soil earlier this month as he was accused of being "an undeclared military intelligence officer." Russia blasted it as a lie, and its top diplomat overseeing military affairs was forced to leave.

The Kremlin is now threatening further diplomatic escalation while complaining about London's "unfriendly," "anti-Russian" and politically motivated recent actions.

The British government has of late quietly launched a pressure campaign on Russian diplomatic facilities and personnel in the UK, with Interior Minister James Cleverly recently briefing parliament that multiple Russian-owned properties will be downgraded from having diplomatic status and protections.

Cleverly alleged that Russian sites in Sussex as well as in London will see their diplomatic immunity removed. Cleverly told parliament that "we believe have been used for intelligence purposes."

As we detailed this week, British intelligence has gone so far as to accuse Putin of plotting 'physical attacks' on British soil and NATO sites

Claire's Observations:  It has always interested me, that the people pushing for more, and more ferocious wars, are those who have the least to lose when an horrific war actually consumes the planet.  They have their bunkers; their stored foods and medicines; and places to park their money which they believe will be safe from any kind of physical (or human) corruption.  How convenient.

Ever since losing the House, Nancy Pelosi has stayed mostly out of the limelight. But now that we are nearing a major election, it seems the former House Speaker is eager to be seen. Perhaps she thinks she can help Democrats win big in November—despite her own failed track record.

She has spoken out against Israel—joining Chuck Schumer in condemning America’s longstanding ally.

Now, she is speaking out about President Joe Biden. He recently challenged Donald Trump to two debates, one in June and the other in September. Biden wants the debates to be held on CNN and ABC—with no live audience. Trump accepted the conditions. But Pelosi had some hard words for old Joe.
