"Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to know that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge, I mean of the characters and conduct of their rulers." -- John Adams

As Russian forces are capturing more territory in eastern Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin is willing to end the war across the current frontlines, according to Reuters. Ukrainian officials rejected the offer.

Four sources speaking with Reuters said that Putin was prepared to freeze war along the current frontlines but was willing to keep fighting if Ukraine and its Western backers rejected the offer for negotiations. “Putin can fight for as long as it takes, but Putin is also ready for a ceasefire – to freeze the war,” one source said, describing Putin’s position.

When asked by Reuters about talks, Putin responded, “Let them resume.”

Three weeks after a mob attacked pro-Palestinian activists encamped at the University of California, Los Angeles, police have made their first arrest in the violence, a man they say was seen in video footage beating victims with a wooden pole.

The suspect, identified as Edan On, 18, was taken into custody on Thursday in the city of Beverly Hills and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, the UCLA Police Department said in a statement on Friday.

The man, who police said had no affiliation with UCLA, was reported by local media to be a Beverly Hills High School student.

Israel has not only completely disregarded the orders of the International Court of Justice to cease its assault on Rafah as we expected it to do, but has actually ramped up its ruthlessness as though trying to make a point. There were reportedly more than 60 Israeli airstrikes on the southernmost city in the Gaza strip in the 48 hours after the ICJ ruling, including a horrifying massacre on a displacement camp full of civilians in tents.

The ABC reports:

Israeli air strikes have killed at least 35 Palestinians and wounded dozens in an area in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah designated for the displaced, Palestinian health and civil emergency service officials said.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said women and children made up most of the dead and dozens of wounded.

The strike took place in Tel Al-Sultan neighbourhood in western Rafah on Sunday, local time, where thousands of people were taking shelter after many fled the eastern areas of the city where Israeli forces began a ground offensive over two weeks ago.

Claire's Observations:  Israel knows precisely where these camps for Displaced Palestinians are, because they demand the GPS coordinates for any and all displaced Palestinians' camps; it makes the slaughter of innocent Palestinian women and children so much easier.

State officials are increasingly targeting public mask-wearing in new legislation and prosecutions in an attempt to crack down on pro-Palestinian campus protests.

Why it matters: Wearing a mask can help protesters evade facial recognition cameras that police and campus officials use to identify participants in a campus demonstration.

  • Campus protesters are facing ramifications beyond possible arrest: Some faculty members have been fired and students face suspensions.

State of play: A handful of states are pursuing new legislation to ban public mask-wearing in most situations. Others are reviving old laws that they hadn't enforced in years to target protesters, experts say.

Webmaster addition: First they tell us we must wear masks and now they are saying masks are forbidden.

  • Meeting discussed the urgent need to end the war in Gaza and take the necessary steps to implement a two-state solution

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and Norway hosted a meeting on a coordinated approach to the recognition of Palestine in Brussels on Sunday.

The meeting discussed the urgent need to end the war in Gaza and take the necessary steps to implement a two-state solution, Saudi Press Agency reported.

It was attended by ministers and representatives of Algeria, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Jordan, Latvia, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Palestine, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkiye, the UAE, the UK, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The meeting is a continuation of a previous one on the same subject hosted by Riyadh on April 29 for Arab and European ministers.

The conference expressed support for efforts aimed at reaching an immediate ceasefire, releasing prisoners and hostages, ending the war in the Gaza Strip and all illegal unilateral measures and violations in the occupied Palestinian territories including controlling the Rafah crossing, and addressing the catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Concrete steps toward establishing a Palestinian state in the context of the two-state solution, and adopting a political path that supports a sustainable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were also topics of discussion.

The meeting stressed the importance of the international community’s recognition of the Palestinian state in order to adopt a comprehensive approach toward a reliable and irreversible path to implementing the two-state solution in accordance with international law and agreed standards, including UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Claire's Observations:  I am delighted to see Saudi Arabia acting like an "adult in the room" on this issue; that is nothing short of wonderful!    And seriously, seeing people working together to right an historic wrong?!? Alleluia!!!!

Again, my concerns are about the new Palestinian state becoming a rigid theocracy, ruled by Ayatollahs' "Fatwas" still remains for me.

The Israeli army has been abducting injured Palestinian civilians from hospitals in Gaza and transporting them to a detention camp in the Negev, where they are shackled to beds and undergo major surgeries, often without painkillers, the Guardian reported on 24 May.

A whistleblower from the Sde Teiman detention camp told the Guardian some patients had come from hospitals in Gaza after being abducted by Israeli forces. “These were patients who had been captured by the Israeli army while being treated in Gaza hospitals and brought here. They had limbs and infected wounds. They were moaning in pain,” the source said.

The source described how the field hospital in the detention camp consisted of tents, including an emergency room where patients underwent surgery on a stretcher as there was no operating table.

The patients were handcuffed to the beds, made to wear diapers, and blindfolded.

In one case, a detainee’s hand had been amputated “because the wrists had become gangrenous due to handcuffing wounds.”

A second whistleblower who spoke with the Guardian said, “There were about 15 patients in total, they were all handcuffed and blindfolded. They were naked, wearing diapers and were covered by blankets. Most of them appeared to have obvious war injuries; some had undergone amputations, and others underwent major abdominal or chest surgery. They were practically naked except for a diaper.”

President Joe Biden’s administration has begun stockpiling mRNA vaccines in preparation for a bird flu pandemic to be unleashed ahead of the November presidential election.

Scientists have just announced that they have developed an experimental vaccine that will soon be rolled out as part of a mass vaccination campaign.

These new vaccines were not designed for birds and other animals, where the current strain of bird flu is spreading, however.

The mRNA injections are for use in humans, or more specifically, the general public.

Even though this strain of bird flu has not even been transmitted from human to human, there is already a new supply of H5N1 vaccines and other mRNA bird flu vaccines in the works.

These vaccines introduce a genetically-specific antigen from the most recent strain of influenza A virus sub-type H5N1.

According to the traditional definition of vaccine science, this antigen is intended to activate human immune cells and spur long-term immune memory of the target antigen — potentially protecting the individual when they are exposed to the specific strain later on.

But how do the vaccine companies know that this specific strain is going to be responsible for a pandemic flu?

A San Diego federal judge on Tuesday blasted the U.S. Attorney’s Office for its “significant misconduct” in the prosecution of the U.S. Navy’s “Fat Leonard” bribery and corruption scandal, saying the continued crumbling of the case is an “embarrassment to the government.”

U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino said during a hearing in her San Diego courtroom that prosecutorial “misconduct started (the) unraveling of this case.” She called it an “extremely unfortunate” situation that was “all the government’s making.”

Sammartino made the comments during a hearing in which she agreed — reluctantly — to throw out a previous guilty plea by former Navy Cmdr. Stephen Shedd and dismissed all charges against him. She also dismissed felony pleas by three other former Navy officers and a retired Marine colonel and allowed the four men to each plead guilty to a single misdemeanor.

In a similar move last year as the result of the same government misconduct, the judge tossed out the jury convictions of four Navy officers who had been found guilty at trial and allowed them to plead guilty to misdemeanor counts.

Johnny Wactor – the former star of the popular soap opera "General Hospital" – is dead at 37 after being fatally shot in downtown Los Angeles during an alleged catalytic converter theft, according to multiple reports.

Wactor's mother, Scarlett Wactor, told TMZ that her son and one of his coworkers noticed "three men messing with Johnny's car" in downtown Los Angeles early Saturday morning.

The mother said that Wactor "didn't try to fight or stop them," but the "men shot him anyway before taking off."

The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to a 911 call around 3:25 a.m. PT on Saturday, and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

Recently I was watching a short documentary about the history of political discourse and division in the US and it got me thinking about how the internal conflicts of the past might relate to the rampant social battles Americans are dealing with today.

From early disagreements between various Founding Fathers on hot button issues like the Sedition Act, central banking and standing armies, to epic and disastrous conflagrations like the Civil War, America has never been “of one mind” on everything.

Overall, though, the longstanding assumption is that even when we slip and fall into disarray Americans will find common ground and move on towards the future together.  It’s a nice sentiment, but what if this ideal no longer applies?

There are some people that argue there was never a golden era for the US; that we’ve always been destructive, or exploitative or “imperialist.” Of course, it’s very easy to examine any given time period through the lens of modern sensibilities and pass judgment. How we would do things today is not necessarily how we would do things yesterday. We can’t easily condemn the men and women of the past without at least recognizing that we will probably never see the issues of their day from their perspective.

Yesterday, as the Ukrainian regime fired a wave of US-supplied, long-range ATACMS missiles at Russian forces in Crimea, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called for a vast escalation of the war, in which Ukraine would use NATO missiles to bomb Russia.

NATO’s escalation, in response to the accelerating collapse of the Ukrainian armed forces, is rapidly exposing its own lies about the war. As Stoltenberg made his remarks to The Economist, Reuters was publishing a collection of interviews with top associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin, appealing to the NATO powers for a cease-fire and warning of the danger of nuclear war. It is not Moscow, but the NATO powers led by Washington that are driving the war, threatening the rapid outbreak of total war in Europe and worldwide.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has decided to bar the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem from providing services to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank in response to Madrid’s decision to recognize Palestine as a state.

“I have decided to sever the connection between the Spanish mission to Israel and the Palestinians, and to prohibit the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem from providing services to Palestinians from the West Bank,” Katz said in a statement on 24 May.

Norway, Ireland, and Spain announced on 22 May that they will formally recognize Palestine as a state next week.

The Israeli decision is a response to the announcement and to comments made by a Spanish minister on 23 May.

Katz said on Friday that if “this ignorant hate-filled person wants to truly understand what radical Islam wants, she should learn about the 700 years of Islamic rule in Al-Andalus – modern-day Spain,” in reference to Spain’s Labor and Economy Minister Yolanda Diaz, who said in a speech a day earlier that “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea.”

Following the decision to recognize Palestinian statehood, Tel Aviv immediately recalled its ambassadors to Ireland and Norway and pledged to recall its envoy to Spain. The foreign ministry also summoned the ambassadors from the three European nations to “reprimand” them

Claire's Observations:  Katz is attempting to put out a "5 Alarm Fire" with a water pistol of "reprimand", and it is absolutely not working.   This should have happened right after the Balfour Declaration was signed, and it would have avoided much bloodshed had it happened then.

But a Palestinian government, in the 21st century, has to be a poster child for basic human rights; the rights of women; education of its children; and a governance which acts in peace and good faith with all the governments around it,  including that  of Israel.

And folks, if Mandela's South African could do it, after all the pain and suffering indigenous South Africa suffered under the apartheid regime, so, potentially, can the Palestinians, if there is a will to do it.

What concerns me greatly, however, is the potential for a viable Palestine, becoming an arch-conservative  theocracy, as  Iran (and Israel) has done, with an anciently  rigid code of behaviour, and spikes coming out against all of its neighbors, including Israel.

That, for me, is a worst-case scenario for an independent Palestine, and I pray that this does not happen, in the new Palestinian state.

That Gen Z Americans have unique foreign policy views isn’t news, but the recent student-led protests over the Israel-Hamas war has highlighted the generational differences in this country and may portend a future political distancing of the U.S. from its long-time client in Tel Aviv.

Some of the indicators may be concerning. Aside from displaying more support for ceasefire than their older cohorts, a majority of 18-24 year-olds in a December Harvard/Harris poll — 67% — said they believe Jews “as a class” are oppressors, and that the 10/7 attack was justified by Palestinians’ grievances (60%). But then, the poll also found 78% of Americans aged 18-34 believe Israel has a right to exist. The majority of this cohort also called what Hamas did on Oct. 7 terrorism and said anti-Semitism is on the rise on college campuses.

Over 25,000 NGOs are active in Georgia, and most rely on funding from Europe and the US. A new bill aiming to reign in Western meddling has sparked furious anti-government protests explicitly encouraged by Washington.

A dark political atmosphere is swirling over the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, and grows more ominous by the day. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has been told by an EU commissioner he will suffer the fate of Robert Fico, the Slovakian leader still fighting for his life after an assassination attempt by a Ukraine proxy war ultra. US lawmakers are moving to sanction members of the ruling Georgian Dream party, and in parliament on May 14, opposition MP Tako Charkviani threatened: “Believe me, there will be a color revolution in Georgia.”

The cause of this tumult is a bill known as the “foreign influence transparency” law which would compel organizations to publicly disclose their foreign funding. For weeks, the streets of Tbilisi have been filled with tens of thousands of protesters who are demanding that authorities dump the law, which they believe will compromise Georgia’s path to EU membership. Despite vehement condemnation from EU and US officials, the bill has now passed. The US has since threatened to impose visa restrictions on legislators who supported the legislation, and protesters show no sign of giving up.

In Stoughton, Mass., students arrive with traumatic pasts and little English. The same is happening in Denver.

The Wall Street Journal comments on The Massive Immigration Wave Hitting America’s Classrooms

Millions of migrants, most seeking asylum, have crossed the border in recent years and have been allowed to settle in the U.S. until a federal immigration judge decides their fate, a process that can take years. Among the record numbers, federal data suggest, are as many as one million children who have arrived with their families or on their own since 2021.

They are settling in cities and entering public schools around the U.S., adding financial and logistical strains in communities where they have arrived in large numbers. Districts are faced with the need for additional teachers and staff who can teach English and space for new students, often while waiting for promised supplemental federal or state funding.

Denver schools, for example, earlier this year announced a $17.5 million budget shortfall because of new migrant students.

There were recently more than 500 English learners in Stoughton schools, double the number from three years ago. The increase was fueled partly by 90 students, ranging from kindergarten to high school, placed by the state in two nearby hotels serving as homeless shelters. Many are from recently arrived Haitian migrant families.

It's yet another reminder of why blindly 'trusting the science' may not always be the best go-to move in the future.

217 year old Wiley science publisher has reportedly "peer reviewed" more than 11,000 papers that were determined to be fake without ever noticing. The papers were referred to as "naked gobbledygook sandwiches",  Australian blogger Jo Nova wrote on her blog last week

"It’s not just a scam, it’s an industry," she said. "Who knew, academic journals were a $30 billion dollar industry?"

According to Nova's post, professional cheating services are employing AI to craft seemingly "original" academic papers by shuffling around words. For instance, terms like "breast cancer" morphed into "bosom peril," and a "naïve Bayes" classifier turns into "gullible Bayes."

Similarly, in one paper, an ant colony was bizarrely rebranded as an "underground creepy crawly state."

The misuse of terminology extends to machine learning, where a 'random forest' is whimsically translated to 'irregular backwoods' or 'arbitrary timberland'.

Nova writes that shockingly, these papers undergo peer review without any rigorous human oversight, allowing egregious errors, like converting 'local average energy' to 'territorial normal vitality', to slip through.

In this piece I present four scenarios for the ‘endgame’ to the Russo-Ukrainian war. They are:

  1. The overruling majority (peace).
  2. The immovable majority (wider war).
  3. Regime change in Russia (risky conflict).
  4. World War III (nuclear holocaust).

Scenarios concentrate on the drivers of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance, or NATO. More precisely, they deal with whether NATO is being driven by simply erratic decisions, or whether it’s an aggressor. I went through these basic scenarios in length in my last entry.

The Biden administration, using its proxy forces in Ukraine, launched an unprecedented attack on “a key element of Russia’s nuclear umbrella” on Thursday effectively blinding the Russian military from detecting incoming nuclear-armed ballistic missiles. “Satellite imagery confirms” that multiple drones severely damaged “a Russian strategic early warning radar site in the southwestern end of the country” leaving Moscow more vulnerable to enemy attack. The western media has largely blacked-out any coverage of the incident which should have been presented in headlines across the country. According to Russian nuclear doctrine, any attack on Russia’s essential nuclear first-alert system provides a justification for nuclear retaliation.

Webmaster addition: And now, as reported below, a second radar has been attacked!

You don’t need to be an expert on Asian economic and security issues to know that if Japan and Korea want to avoid war and to make a lot of money, they should pivot away from America completely and line up with the Chinese. This is very obvious.

It’s unclear if the Japanese and Koreans are so driven by Poland-style hatred that they are willing to sacrifice everything in order to pursue an anti-China agenda, or if they are looking for an exit strategy.

We know the Philippines is looking for an exit strategy. They just don’t have one because they are totally dominated by the Americans. South Korea and Japan both lost wars to the US and are heavily occupied, but they are clever people who might be able to figure out a pivot, if they decide that’s what they want.

Memorial Day dates back to the Civil War, and is one reason why November 11 (Remembrance Day in the Anglosphere, Veterans Day in the US) is less of a big deal in the US than in England or Canada—by the time of the Armistice in 1918, the US had already had its own massively destructive internecine war.

And while there are states where Confederate Memorial Day is celebrated separately from Memorial Day, what could be called the very first Memorial Day was a joint affair in Columbus, Mississippi, as noted by science fiction writer Travis Corcoran

A controversial bill being pushed by lefty legislators in Albany is trying to make the Empire State less “white,” critics say.

The legislation, sponsored by Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas (D-Queens) and Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Queens), would mandate state agencies and other entities use separate categories for Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) New Yorkers when collecting demographics data—rather than relying on the US Census, which classifies them under one “white” umbrella.

The state Senate on Thursday voted unanimously to pass it, but González-Rojas’ version of the bill is still facing pushback in the Assembly.

Both pols argue “MENA” individuals don’t benefit from so-called “white privilege” and instead face discrimination daily by falsely being associated with the 9/11 terror attacks.

They and other supporters also insist the current system shuts MENA individuals out of qualifying for minority-owned business grants, language programs and other critical government aid and services by labeling them white.

Left-leaning researchers have spent decades focusing on racial bias as a contributing factor to mental illness, but their research has ignored bias and belligerence directed toward whites.

Our culture is uncomfortable talking about antiwhite aggression. Some of this is understandable. In the public mind, concerns about anti-white hate are linked with white nationalism and other forms of extremism. But all forms of racial hatred are abhorrent, and confronting anti-white hate doesn’t imply hostility toward any other racial group.

Antiwhite behavior manifests in many ways—violent attacks (including assault and rape) motivated by racial animus, bullying at school, insults, harassment, discrimination, and racially demeaning trainings at the workplace. Other examples include university courses that malign whites, and sometimes the news media’s rush to judge white people accused of racism, without sufficient evidence.

Dear majority leader, staunch friend and ally of Israel Senator Chuck Schumer, do not invite Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to Congress. He has no business being there – not since his constitutional coup last year, and certainly not now in the midst of the war in Gaza.

You, Senator, are the last person in Washington who needs to demonstrate his pro-Israel bona fides. They have been reliably ironclad for decades.

The prime minister pretends to want and need a show of support from Congress and “be heard.” You’ve heard enough already in his endless interviews on U.S. media outlets.

Support from Congress? That’s a novel idea. This Congress generously and graciously authorized over $14 billion in emergency aid to Israel in April, per U.S. President Joe Biden’s request.

Netanyahu wants to tell you that Israel is fighting a “second War of Independence.” Over 50 percent of the Israeli public, in consistent polling, isn’t buying that narrative. Over 70 percent want him to resign. He wants to warn you of the grave dangers of “imposing” on Israel a Palestinian state? That’s a blatant lie. No one is imposing anything, and he has had 15 years to come up with an alternative model to the two-state solution. Have you heard anything from him on that? Of course not.

Hundreds of people from Ashdod and neighboring areas gathered on the city’s beach on Saturday to see a US army vessel that had become stuck on the beach next to a piece of the floating pier that the US built recently to bring aid to Gaza. The vessel, LCM 8558, is a landing craft.

The US Army and the IDF worked together during the late afternoon to try to find a solution for the beached vessel. A front loader dug out sand from beneath its large propellers.

Then, the front loader was attached to the starboard bow of the vessel to try to pivot the watercraft to free it. Low tide prevented this from working.

The Knesset is set to hold a preliminary vote designating the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as a terrorist organization, by which it will then sever all ties with the body that is the main relief service provider for 5.9 Palestinian refugees in the Middle East.

“The purpose of this bill is to declare UNRWA as a terrorist organization for all intents and purposes as well as order the termination of the relations [and the cooperation] of the State of Israel with the agency, either directly or indirectly,” Israel Beytenu MK Yulia Malinovksy wrote in the introduction to the bill, which she authored.

The legislative push comes as the International Court of Justice and the international community at large have taken Israel to task for not sufficiently ensuring the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza.
