“Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” -- Alexis de Tocqueville

Estonian President Alar Karis has claimed that meaningful discussions on ending the Ukraine conflict can only take place when Moscow is fully subdued. The head of state also called on Western nations to attempt to force political change in Russia.

In an interview with the news website Yle on Sunday – ahead of Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s state visit to Tallinn on Monday – Karis expressed skepticism over whether Russia can “change” quickly enough to “respond to our [Western] understanding of democracy.”

He urged Western powers to intensify the pressure on Moscow – referring to sanctions imposed by the EU and US since the start of the conflict – with the goal of fueling public discontent among ordinary Russians.

“We will do everything possible to bring Russia and Putin to their knees,” Karis stressed. “Then it will be possible to start serious negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.”

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg struggled Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation to explain why the Biden administration has only managed to build “seven or eight” electric vehicle (EV) charging stations thus far.

As Breitbart News has noted, while the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 allocated $7.5 billion for EV stations, as part of building a national EV charging infrastructure, no EV charging stations had been built by the end of 2023.

Only about seven or eight had been built under the program by April — while the fossil fuel industry has been cashing in by lobbying to have the stations built at existing gas stations.

On 20 May, something important changed for Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky. On that day, the five-year presidential term for which he had been elected in 2019 came to an end. He remains in office, however, without having to face fresh elections. Zelensky’s critics, including within Ukraine, argue that he is now illegitimate in a strict, constitutional sense – in effect, a usurper. His followers and defenders, including in the West, insist that Zelensky legally remains president under martial law.

What is clear is that, according to the Ukrainian constitution, presidential elections can be held during wartime (unlike parliamentary ones, which are ruled out), even if a lack of clarity would require amendments, as Ukrainian experts have explained in national media. Even the New York Times acknowledged as much as recently as last October. At that point, however, Zelensky himself had not yet ruled out elections and American super hawk Senator Lindsey Graham was demanding them in his usual imperious tone.

Hussein said that the Jordanians are working to turn the positions of more countries against Israel, and defined it as a real "diplomatic and political battle."

The prince noted that the Jordanians viewed the Palestinian issue as a national interest and would continue to advocate for them. He said that the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has gone on for the last 25 years, but has become more public since October 7.

“The Israeli government is escalating the situation in the West Bank as well and trying to drag the region into a regional war,” he said. “We are dealing with a government controlled by an extremist agenda with ministers publicly inciting genocide against Palestinians.”

The crown prince also criticized the world's reaction to the Gaza war. “It is inconceivable that the entire world cannot stop this ongoing tragedy. We are all shocked by the international community’s inability to stop this massacre,” he said. “People in our region have lost trust in the international community and its credibility, and they are right.”

“To date, 35,000 people have been killed, 70% of whom are women and children. What number will move the world to act?” he asked.

A group of lawmakers from the UK Parliament, including the House of Lords, has written to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, demanding immediate recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over North Africa’s coastal Western Sahara region.

In a letter dated May 23, more than 30 MPs declared that a plan put forward by Rabat deserves Britain’s “unequivocal” support because it is the “only solution” to the ongoing conflict over the sparsely populated former Spanish colony, which Morocco annexed nearly five decades ago.

“Such support aligns with our principles and international commitments. It would not compromise our position in the British Overseas Territories, and it can contribute ultimately to peace in this vital region,” the group of parliamentarians stated.

The tent camps stretch for more than 16 kilometres along Gaza's coast, filling the beach and sprawling into empty lots, fields and town streets. Families dig trenches to use as toilets. Fathers search for food and water, while children scavenge in garbage and wrecked buildings for scraps of wood or cardboard for their mothers to burn for cooking.

Over the past three weeks, Israel's offensive in Rafah has sent nearly a million Palestinians fleeing the southern Gaza city and scattering across a wide area.

Most have already been displaced multiple times during Israel's nearly eight-month-old war in Gaza, which has devastated the territory and caused what the United Nations says is a near-famine.

The situation has been worsened by a dramatic plunge in the amount of food, fuel and other supplies reaching the UN and other aid groups to distribute to the population. Palestinians have largely been on their own to resettle their families and find the basics for survival.

The decision by Norway, Spain and Ireland to recognise Palestine as a separate state has rekindled hope among displaced Palestinians that one day they would be able to return to a country of their own and live there in peace.

Last week’s announcement by the European countries marked a diplomatic win for the Palestinians as Israel continues to carry out a brutal war on Gaza where more than 35,000 people, most of them women and children, have been killed.

But the impunity with which the Israeli military has bombed hospitals and schools and flattened entire cities leaves a big question mark on how quickly the international community can move on to create a separate state for the Palestinians.

For Xavier Abu Eid, a Palestinian political scientist, Norway, Spain, and Ireland's recognition of the Palestinian state marks a critical development in the struggle for Palestinian self-determination.

Mossad director Yossi Cohen personally involved in secret plot to pressure Fatou Bensouda to drop Palestine investigation, sources say

The former head of the Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, allegedly threatened a chief prosecutor of the international criminal court in a series of secret meetings in which he tried to pressure her into abandoning a war crimes investigation, the Guardian can reveal.

Yossi Cohen’s covert contacts with the ICC’s then prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, took place in the years leading up to her decision to open a formal investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in occupied Palestinian territories.

That investigation, launched in 2021, culminated last week when Bensouda’s successor, Karim Khan, announced that he was seeking an arrest warrant for the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, over the country’s conduct in its war in Gaza.

Weeks ago, two individuals in a box truck attempted to breach the gates at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Triangle, Virginia. Armed guards immediately stopped them, and the base's top brass quickly covered up the incident.

The reason for burying this incident? It's an election year for President Biden - and this type of news is politically explosive. The suspects were two Jordanian nationals, one reportedly on the FBI's terrorist watch list, raising suspicions that they entered illegally through the Biden administration's open southern border, as one report says, adding this could've been a dry run for a potential vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack.

Potomac Local News first reported the incident. Since then, the New York Post has exposed how the May 3 incident was potentially covered up, even for those on the base for two weeks.
