The US Coast Guard said Friday that its forces intercepted a ship that was attempting to bring fuel to Cuba, as the US continues to enforce a ramped-up oil embargo on the country, which has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis.

The Coast Guard said that the incident occurred in early September, when a “Coast Guard tactical team” boarded the M/V Grace, a 300-foot-long container ship, in the Caribbean Sea.

From leaked reports showing the U.S. Army preparing potential options around Cuba to the U.S. Navy’s strategic tactical shift away from the Iranian blockade line, Murtaza Hussain and Sarmad Jawad analyze what’s driving these moves—and what Trump’s post-midterm foreign policy strategy could look like.

The U.S. Army Reserve is weighing how fast it can send police units, medics, and support teams to U.S. Southern Command, as Pentagon planning linked to Cuba advances on a four-month timeline.

On May 21, Marco Rubio stood on the tarmac at the Miami Homestead Airport and told reporters Cuba “has been one of the leading sponsors of terrorism in the entire region.” The Secretary of State insisted Cuba is a threat to the national security of the United States, although he did not provide evidence to support the claim.

President Trump told the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that the failed communist island nation of Cuba would see freedom, as the U.S. has not been shy about its intentions to kick the communist regime out of Havana. The U.S. has employed gunboat diplomacy through an oil blockade this year, as the failed state has seen its economy collapse even further.

Last March, when I traveled to Cuba on a reporting trip, I had a number of things I was trying to find out, but chief among them was the mystery of the ill-fated assault on Cuba launched from the Florida keys by a band of Cuban-Americans hoping to overthrow the government. The attack was a disaster—it got nicknamed the Bay of Piglets—and ended up with half the men dead and the other half in Cuban custody. Along with Reed Lindsay, a reporter at the great news outlet Belly of the Beast, we pressed the Cuban government for access to the survivors of the boat raid.

Cuba’s power grid collapsed once again this week, this time at a national level, leaving millions of people across the island without electricity.  This is the sixth time since the US cut off fuel sources to the island since January that the national grid has collapsed and it's the most utility shutdown events in the country's recent history.

On Sept. 8, 2026, a panel at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C., examined the national security threat posed by communist run Cuba.

The event took place near the corner of Church Street and 16th Street NW, several blocks from the White House, as reported by Fox News.

Christine Balling, a former advisor to U.S. Special Operations Command South, was leading the discussion when CodePink organizer Olivia DiNucci stood and interrupted.
