The BBC has chosen a “racially diverse cast” to play the characters in its upcoming historical drama about the Battle of Hastings, which occurred in 1066, leading one historian to decry the “bizarre notion that there were black earls in Anglo-Saxon England.”

The eight-part series King and Conqueror, which is a CBS Studios co-production, will feature numerous non-white characters, including one taking the role of a real 11th-century leader.

Black actor Jason Forbes will play the fictional character Thane Thomas, “with the “thanes” being a layer of nobility in the ethnically homogeneous society of Anglo-Saxon England,” reports the Telegraph.“(Elander) Moore, of Trinidadian descent, will play the real historical figure of Morcar, an Earl of Northumbria who fought against Viking and Norman invaders, before being subdued by William after the battle of Hastings.”

Historian Dr Zareer Masani, who has worked with the BBC, lambasted the decision, asserting, “Some of us, including people of colour, grew up thinking actors ought to look like characters they played.”

He warned that the BBC’s approach is “hugely confusing and downright misleading,” adding that it was “absolutely crazy that they’ve applied this colour-blindness to a period when Britain was at its least multicultural, before even the Norman Conquest.”

While it’s acceptable to depict Anglo-Saxons as black or mixed race, apparently it’s no longer politically correct to even acknowledge that white Anglo-Saxons existed, given a recent decision by The Cambridge University Press to change the name of its ‘Anglo-Saxon England’ journal to ‘Early Medieval England and its Neighbours.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Warsaw on Monday, where he signed a new security agreement with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Given that the sought-after admission into NATO has been on hold, Zelensky has been inking separate defense pacts with individual G7 and NATO countries, including Germany, the US, UK, France, and the EU. But there's a key and unprecedented provision in this newest pact with Poland, centered on authorization for Polish forces to intercept inbound Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory

According to the agreement, Ukraine has formally given its permission for such anti-air intercepts in the scenario where Warsaw believes a Russian rocket is headed toward Polish territory.

Ukraine and Poland agreed to further develop political, military, and economic cooperation, and "cooperate closely in the reconstruction of Ukraine as a sovereign and democratic state."

During the joint press conference with Tusk, Zelensky thanked Poland for the "special agreements" in the document.

Claire's Observations:  Poland is a NATO member.  And in fact, in March of this year, the following article appeared: https://www.armscontrol.org/act/2024-03/news-briefs/missile-defense-system-poland-could-be-operational-summer. The article stated the following;

"The U.S. Navy has taken official control of the Aegis Ashore missile defense system in Poland with the aim of making the system fully functional under NATO command as early as this spring.

U.S. Navy and other personnel at the Aegis Ashore missile defense system facility construction outside the town of Redzikowo, Poland, in June 2019. The facility could become fully operational this spring.

The Aegis system was deployed to the Redzikowo Air Base in the north of Poland, about 93 miles from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, and transferred to the control of the Navy on Dec. 15. The base originally was intended to begin operating in 2018, but the project experienced delays.

The acceptance of the Aegis Ashore site in Poland, like its sister site in Romania, is an important step in our efforts to get [the system] ready to protect against the growing threat posed by ballistic missiles launched from Iran,” U.S. Naval Forces in Europe said in a Dec. 18 statement.

The system represents a significant development in NATO's missile defense capabilities. It is part of the structure to protect NATO allies from ballistic missile threats called the European Phased Adaptive Approach, which was conceived during the Obama administration."

"... ballistic missiles launched from Iran"?!?!?!?!?!  Are these people serious?!?

Why in the name of sanity, would leadership of Iran do this, when they know the NATO response would be to do its best to obliterate their country into seas of radioactive glass?!?

The short answer is, they would not.  The Iranian leadership is many things, but stupid .... is not one of them.  They have more pressing problems closer to home, like the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, and its coming incursion into Lebanon, "scheduled" to start the middle of this month.

OK, having looked at this, let's consider the NATO Charter.  It states that an attack against one NATO country, is an attack against them all.  IF Poland's interceptors do NOT work as hoped against Russian rockets, and a Russian bomb actually lands inside Poland, rather than in Ukraine, we're off and running in a major, and dangerous escalation of this conflict.

Neither NATO or the US has the weaponry; the troop strength; the manufacturing, or the money necessary to win a war against Russia right now, no matter how much many Neocons are feverishly hoping to get this conflict inflamed before the US elections in November (because according to historical numbers, US voters NEVER have left the party in power for the other party during a war).

Perhaps they see their chances escalating with these agreements.

What I see from these agreements, is a pretty wretched outcome for the people living in those countries with which such agreements have been signed to protect Ukraine.

And please remember: these leaders have their bunkers; a full stash of medical supplies;  their caviar, and their champagne, while the rest of their citizens may well rot in a thermonuclear hell.

The United States unemployment rate has risen to 4.1%, the highest in three years, which is also significantly higher than the level seen in 2019. In June, a 70,000 increase in government jobs boosted payroll employment by 206,000. One-third of job creation is public sector jobs paid with more debt. Both the employment-to-population ratio and the labour force participation ratio are below the pre-pandemic level and immigrants account for all the labour force growth since the pandemic, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Ned Davis Research.

We live in a world where 97% of peoples income is not keeping up with inflation. Yet were constantly being told daily that this is the greatest economy ever. I guess maybe only for 3% of people whose wages are actually outpacing inflation. What about the rest of us? Once again is this a sign of a strong economy? I don't think so...

The insurgent right-wing party won 14 per cent of the votes but gained just five MPs, due to the even spread of its support. Meanwhile, the Conservatives won just 19 per cent but gained 121 seats under the first-past-the-post voting system. While Labour’s average votes per seat won was 23,600, Reform’s average was 820,745 per seat, the number-crunching shows. And Reform was second in 98 constituencies, meaning that if enough voters had switched from the winning party, it could have leapfrogged the Tories to become the official opposition based on Thursday’s results. In order to overtake the Conservatives, Reform would have needed 672,947 votes in the seats where they came second, The Telegraph calculated. It would have required just 336,474 people to switch from the winning party to Reform, less than 1 per cent of the total electorate, to make Mr Farage leader of the opposition.

A Labour cabinet minister has ruled out the introduction of digital ID cards after Tony Blair called for their use to help control migration. Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds initially said the government would be “looking at all sorts of things” and he did not want to pre-empt that work. But in an interview nearly two hours later he said: "I can rule out ID cards for you. That’s not something which is part of our plans."
