"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." -- Harry S. Truman

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), an outspoken critic of former President Trump, warned of the emergence of a “Putin wing” of the Republican party and stressed the importance of preventing its return to the White House.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Cheney sharply criticized Trump’s recent comments suggesting he would not defend NATO allies in the wake of an attack from Russia and his recent silence following the death of the anti-corruption, pro-democracy opposition leader in Russia, Alexei Navalny.

“I think that we have to take Donald Trump very seriously,” Cheney said Sunday. “We have to take seriously the extent to which you have now got a Putin wing of the Republican Party.”

“I believe the issue this election cycle is making sure the Putin wing of the Republican Party does not take over the West Wing of the White House,” she continued.

I saw a comment from an Israel defender saying “You just lack the intellect to comprehend the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict!”

Just in the last few days we learned that Israeli snipers have been deliberately picking off children in Gaza by shooting them in the head, that Israeli troops summarily executed a prisoner in handcuffs after sending him into a hospital to deliver a message to evacuate, and that Egypt has begun constructing refugee camps in the Sinai Desert to facilitate the ethnic cleansing of Gazans.

“Complexities”. This isn’t complex.

Al-Zaghari told Al Jazeera that testimonies from released prisoners reveal beatings, insults, and threats of rape.

He added that the arrest of Palestinian women and girls has increased and that they face torture, ill-treatment, and intentional neglect.

Beaten brutally

Jaafar Obayat, who recently left Megiddo Prison after 17 years, told Al Jazeera that in the days after October 7, prisoners were assaulted and clothes, necessities, food, blankets, TVs, radios, tables and chairs were confiscated.

That prisoners had such items in their cells in the first place was the fruit of struggles by prisoners over decades.

In Negev Prison, prisoner Thaer Abu Asab was killed simply for asking a guard if there was a ceasefire, a released prisoner, who requested anonymity, told Al Jazeera. He added that prisoners were beaten in their cells near-daily.

When Abu Asab asked his question, the response was an ominous “I’ll show you,” then the guard called a whole unit into Abu Asab’s cell. They beat him with iron rods all over, including his face, and left him lying there.

The prisoners were afraid to ask for medical attention, but eventually, unable to watch him suffer, they shouted until a nurse came to examine him. Two days later, they were told he had died.

Everyone in Abu Asab’s cell, the anonymous prisoner said, was beaten with iron rods after that.

The PPS has recorded thousands of injuries – fractures, bruises and worse – among imprisoned Palestinians who get no treatment. Eight prisoners have died in the last four months after being beaten and not treated, like Mohammed al-Sabar, who died in Ofer prison on February 8

Claire's Observations:  Somewhere in the deepest bowels of hell, Josef Mengele is laughing and applauding this behaviour, on the part of IDF prison guards. Torture is a war crime, by any civilized societal standards; and that fact this this behaviour is not only allowed by Israeli government, but encouraged by it, proves the obvious;  Israel is an horrifically uncivilized country.

A new bill has been filed to give state attorneys general greater authority and legal standing to sue the federal government when it fails to enforce federal immigration law established by Congress.

Republican U.S. Reps. Chip Roy of Texas and Dan Bishop of North Carolina introduced the Standing Up to the Executive Branch for Immigration Enforcement Act, or “SUE for Immigration Enforcement Act,” on Wednesday. The six-page bill is being marked up by the House Judiciary Committee.

It was filed in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last July that held that Texas and Louisiana did not have standing to challenge a policy implemented by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which effectively ended most deportations of illegal foreign nationals.

British Labour leader Keir Starmer said on Sunday a lasting ceasefire is needed between Israel and Hamas, his first such statement since the start of the war in October.

The comments appeared to be a change of position for Starmer, who had previously resisted pressure within his Labour party to call for a ceasefire, backing Israel’s right to fight Hamas after the atrocities of October 7.

With Labour well ahead in the polls before an election later this year, Starmer is keen to present a united front to voters, but the conflict in Gaza has tested that unity.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sided on Sunday with far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, endorsing restrictions on Arab Israelis’ access to Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount during Ramadan, according to multiple reports.

Channels 12, 13, Haaretz, and other outlets reported that the decision diverged from the recommendations of parts of the security establishment.

A governmental source told Channel 12 news that the decision was not final, and was still being considered.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Saturday that the current international system leaves countries with the choice of being either at the table or on the menu, in a comment on the global impact of the US-China rivalry.

"If you are not at the table in the international system, you're gonna be on the menu," Blinken said at the annual Munich Security Conference.

Blinken also confirmed the ongoing strategic rivalry between China and the United States, adding that the US is trying to engage various countries in cooperation on a voluntary basis.

"What we don't need to do and what we're not doing is trying to somehow divide a world into rigid blocs," Blinken added.

People stand in line to get visas at the Thai embassy in Yangon after Myanmar's military government said it would impose military service

More than 1,000 people lined up at the Thai embassy in Yangon on Friday as young people sought to leave Myanmar after the junta said it would impose military service.

The military said last weekend it would enforce a law allowing it to call up all men aged 18-35 and women aged 18-27 to serve for at least two years, as it struggles to quell opposition to its 2021 coup.

The junta faces widespread armed opposition to its rule three years after seizing power from an elected civilian government and recently suffered a series of stunning losses to an armed alliance of ethnic minority groups.

The Thai embassy in Yangon has been swamped with young men and women seeking visas to get out of Myanmar since the announcement last Saturday that the "People's Military Service Law" would be brought into force.

Claire's Observations:  This "Brain Drain" is going to hurt the government of Myanmar not only militarily, but also  economically as well.    These kids who are "voting with their feet" understand that this conscription law is far more about suppressing domestic dissent, than it is about fight wars against "enemies du jour"

Ursula von der Leyen will formally announce her candidacy for a second term as president of the European Commission on Monday, German tabloid Bild has reported. Von der Leyen has already hinted that she seeks a second term, promising on Saturday to appoint a dedicated “defense commissioner” if she holds on to her office.

To secure a second term, von der Leyen will first have to be nominated by her faction in the European Parliament, the centrist European People’s Party (EPP). Speaking to Reuters last month, EPP lawmaker Daniel Caspary said the party would nominate von der Leyen at a congress in March, “if that’s what she wants.”

Should the EPP emerge as the largest party in June’s European elections, which it is projected to do, von der Leyen’s candidacy would then be put before the European Council. From there, a majority vote by the council’s 27 members followed by the parliament’s final approval would see the German installed for another five-year term at the helm of the commission.

Fighting between Russian and NATO-backed Ukrainian forces in the Black Sea and the US campaign against drone-armed Houthis in the Red Sea has shown the growing importance of naval drones in modern warfare. Russian designers have gone a step further, creating a heavy unmanned underwater vehicle that can act as a decoy to fool enemy warships.

Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation has teased new details on a promising autonomous underwater drone known as the Surrogat-V (lit. "Surrogate-V"), with the "V" standing for Vedomiy ("Wingman" or "Slave").

“The Surrogat-V will support the operations of manned submarines, primarily in maintaining and restoring stealth. The ‘Wingman’ will take on tasks which would otherwise give away [the manned sub], including communication, the use of active search tools, etc.,” the holding company, owners of the St. Petersburg-based Rubin Design Bureau developing the new unmanned underwater vehicle, said in a press release this week.

Unless Ukraine receives full NATO membership, it will have no other choice but to develop or somehow obtain an arsenal of nuclear weapons, according to MP Aleksey Goncharenko.

The Ukrainian lawmaker pressed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the issue at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, asking what other options Ukraine has against Russia besides becoming a member of NATO, allying with a nuclear power, or “restoring our nuclear potential.” Blinken, however, dodged the question.

“Once again I will say directly and openly: I support the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine. And I believe that this is our only option for survival,” Goncharenko wrote in a Telegram post on Sunday evening, noting that Blinken did not answer his question.

Webmaster addition:  Israel tried to sell a nuke to South Africa a while back. Might they sell one to Kiev?

LEPOSAVIC, Kosovo (Reuters) - U.S. peacekeeping troops in Kosovo are well equipped and stand ready to prevent violence in the country's ethnically divided north, often the scene of armed clashes in which most recently a policeman was killed, a commander told Reuters.

NATO has reinforced its presence with another 1,000 troops after violence last September during which the policeman was killed in a shootout between Kosovo police and gunmen who entered from Serbia.

More than 570 U.S. soldiers serve under the NATO-led mission, which in total has around 4,500 troops deployed.

"We are well prepared, well trained and equipped to react to anything that could happen here right now," Colonel Ross Walker, commander of U.S. soldiers from the Texas Army National Guard, told Reuters in an interview

Claire's Observations:  Kosovo continues to be a powder-keg of ethnic outrage.  If the excrement hits the ventilation system here, it is only a matter of time before all efforts of "Peacekeepers"  go" mammary glands vertical.", unfortunately.

Millions of demonstrators have gathered in over 120 cities around the world in response to a call out of London for a second International Day of Solidarity with Gaza.

The protests are aimed at halting Israel's attempts at  "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing", Palestinian Forum in Britain (PFB) said in a statement.

Protests were held on Saturday in Istanbul, Washington, Sydney, Dublin, Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Brasilia, Cape Town, Rabat and Baghdad, among others.

Adnan Hmidan, Vice President of the PFB and a representative of the coalition behind the initiative, said the vast turnout was a testament to sustained global support for Gaza that countered "official Western expectations of waning interest overtime".

"In London, Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff, and major cities worldwide, we witness a resounding movement aimed at halting the genocidal crimes perpetrated by the occupation, evident just days after a YouGov poll revealed that 66 percent of Britons advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza, with support for Palestine in Britain rising to 22 percent compared to 16 percent for Israel," Hmidan said.

European Broadcasting Union said it had conducted a review and decided late last year that Israel could participate [GETTY]

Israel can compete in this year's Eurovision Song Contest, organisers confirmed on Thursday, again rejecting calls for it to be excluded over the Gaza war like Russia was after invading Ukraine.

On Wednesday, a group of 400 celebrities including British actress Helen Mirren, British singer Boy George and former Kiss frontman Gene Simmons published an open letter supporting Eurovision's decision to maintain Israel's participation.

The letter was issued in response to petitions calling for Israel to be kicked out of the world's biggest live music event, which is being held in Malmo, Sweden, in May.

Claire's Observations:  Hey, I have some GREAT lyric concepts, that speak to just what  Israel is doing right now; why don't the Israeli participants create a groove to a hook titled "Assassination Nation", or "Yeah, We're the Genocidal Maniacs, Deal with It!"   And of course, who can forget that incredible T-shirt, sported by the IDF members, stating "One Shot; Two Kills" about shooting pregnant Palestinian women?  That just about sums it up!!

War on Gaza: Indian union refuses to load ships with arms headed for Israel

The move comes days after Israel received 20 Indian-made Hermes 900 drones, routinely used in attacks on Gaza

An Indian trade union operating at several ports across the country have vowed not to load or offload ships carrying weapons to Israel, the general secretary of the Water Transport Workers Federation of India has said, just days after news broke that Indian-made combat drones had made their way to Israel.

In an interview with Middle East Eye on Sunday, T. Narendra Rao, general secretary of the Water Transport Workers Federation of India, said the union refused to be involved in any action that would add to the further suffering of Palestinians

"We decided, if any vessel or any ship is carrying the arms or ammunitions or weaponised cargo to Israel, we decided to boycott. We will not cooperate with that," Rao told MEE.

Last week, the union released a statement announcing its decision to boycott all ships carrying arms to Israel. It added the decision also applied to any ship with military cargo headed to Israel.

Scores of Palestinian civilians have been killed over the last few hours as Israel continues its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip for the 135th day.

Scores of civilians, including many children and women, were killed and others wounded in Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling in central Gaza.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that approximately 40 civilians were killed, while dozens sustained various injuries as Israeli forces targeted several homes in the town of Al-Zawayda, the city of Deir al-Balah, and the Nuseirat refugee camp.

In Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza, at least 20 Palestinians were killed in a series of Israeli strikes that targeted civilian homes in and around the city.

Finding shelter in the Gaza Strip, whether in a basic tent on the street or in an overcrowded classroom, has become a luxury for hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians.

Israel's offensive has rendered Gaza almost uninhabitable in just four months.

The Israeli army has destroyed or damaged more than half of the buildings in Gaza and continues to steadily shrink safe or liveable spaces across the besieged enclave.

It also forced Palestinians out of their homes in northern and central Gaza towards the south, displacing 85 percent of Gaza's 2.3 million residents.

Around 1.5 million people have sought refuge in Rafah, an area spanning just 64 sqkm, and are now struggling to find enough space to even put up a tent due to extreme overcrowding

A group of Israeli soldiers in the elite Givati Brigade have refused to take part in military operations in the Gaza Strip, accusing the army of neglecting their psychological and physical well-being, Haaretz reported on Wednesday.

Since the Israeli army began its ground invasion of in Gaza at the end of October 2023, the Givati Brigade, which includes elite fighters, has participated in the most difficult battles in the enclave and lost many of its leaders and members, forcing the army leadership to “temporarily” withdraw them from the battlefield.

Palestinian Resistance groups have repeatedly defeated Givati and other elite forces in Gaza, pushing them to withdraw from certain areas after costing them many soldiers between dead and wounded.

Claire's Observations:  Although this will get little to no mention  by the US press, this is a significant development, and not a welcome one, for the IDF.

I stopped keeping track of how many new orphans I had operated on. After surgery they would be filed somewhere in the hospital, I’m unsure of who will take care of them or how they will survive. On one occasion, a handful of children, all about ages 5 to 8, were carried to the emergency room by their parents. All had single sniper shots to the head. These families were returning to their homes in Khan Yunis, about 2.5 miles away from the hospital, after Israeli tanks had withdrawn. But the snipers apparently stayed behind. None of these children survived.

On my last day, as I returned to the guest house where locals knew foreigners were staying, a young boy ran up and handed me a small gift. It was a rock from the beach, with an Arabic inscription written with a marker: “From Gaza, With Love, Despite the Pain.” As I stood on the balcony looking out at Rafah for the last time, we could hear the drones, bombings and bursts of machine-gun fire, but something was different this time: The sounds were louder, the explosions were closer.

This week, Israeli forces raided another large hospital in Gaza, and they’re planning a ground offensive in Rafah. I feel incredibly guilty that I was able to leave while millions are forced to endure the nightmare in Gaza. As an American, I think of our tax dollars paying for the weapons that likely injured my patients there. Already driven from their homes, these people have nowhere else to turn.

As U.S. House members grapple with whether to give $60 billion more to Ukraine, they must also grapple with the checkered nature of the intelligence they’ve been fed.

On July 13, 2023, President Joe Biden announced Russian President Vladimir Putin “has already lost the war.” That was six days after C.I.A. Director William Burns, normally a sane voice, had called the war a “strategic failure” for Russia with its “military weaknesses laid bare.”

Earlier, in December 2022, National Intelligence Director Avril Haines reported that the Russians were experiencing “shortages of ammunition” and were “not capable of indigenously producing what they are expending.”

We advise caution, as these same people now say that Ukraine can prevail if the U.S. provides $60 billion more. Do they think they can change geography, overcome Russian industrial might, and persuade the Russians that Ukraine should not be a core interest of theirs

Israel was behind attacks on natural gas pipelines that occurred inside Iran last week, The New York Times has reported, marking an escalation of Israel’s covert operations.

The Times report cited two unnamed Western officials and a military strategist affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). They said the attack, which hit two pipelines in the provinces of Fars and Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari, required deep knowledge of Iran’s energy infrastructure.

The Western officials said the attack was meant as a symbolic move and didn’t cause much damage, but Iranian officials said the attack caused disruptions in at least five provinces across Iran. According to the Times, energy experts estimate the sabotage knocked out about 15 percent of Iran’s daily natural gas production.

Iran has called the attack a “sabotage and terrorist” attack but has not yet blamed Israel. The military strategist affiliated with the IRGC said the Iranian government was aware that it was carried out by Israel. After previous Israeli covert attacks inside Iran, Iranian officials have usually waited a few days to assess the situation before formally blaming Israel.

Claire's Observations:  It appears that Israel is "softening up" Iran's infrastructure as a prelude to a much larger attack.  The question now is not if, but when.

And when this happens, how many American troops will be deployed, please?!?  And do not think, for a second, that Israel hasn't asked for, and been assured by the Bidenistas, that US troops will come to their aid, for such an attack.

But there is a question I hope (and pray) is keeping US and Israeli leadership awake at night; what if Russia and China come to the aid of Iran, should such an attack happens?!?

Would we be facing World War III, and the potential for nuclear annihilation, should this happen?!?
