Friday marks the second anniversary of the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol by an enraged mob convinced the 2020 presidential election was “stolen” from Donald Trump. Democrats have milked the event for political purposes for two straight years, with President Biden characterizing it as the “worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”
Two years since the 2021 unrest outside the Capitol complex, Democrats have failed to provide any rock-solid evidence of Donald Trump’s planning of an “insurrection” in Washington to try to remain in power; still, the governing party may just prove brazen enough to try to prosecute the former president, notwithstanding the tremendous political risks involved, observers have told Sputnik.
On December 22, the House January 6 Committee Investigating the Attack on the Capitol released its final report, charging Donald Trump with a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the 2020 election and “block the transfer of power,” and accusing him of orchestrating the spectacular riot at the seat of US legislative power.
Several days prior, the nine-member committee voted to refer Donald Trump and several of his allies to the Justice Department on criminal charges including insurrection, obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States government, and making false statements to the United States government. If an investigation proceeds and Trump is tried, convicted, and locked up, he could spend the rest of his life in jail, and be permanently barred from ever running for office again.
Salesforce and Amazon announced major layoffs on Wednesday, beginning 2023 with significant cuts during what has already been a brutal period for the tech sector.
Amazon announced that its layoffs will impact more than 18,000 employees - the highest number so far at a major tech company.
Salesforce will lay off 10 percent of its workforce - or about 8,000 workers - after a period of over-hiring, according to its Co-CEO Marc Benioff, who said he took 'full responsibility' for the decision.
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed again to secure enough votes to win the speaker’s gavel in the first ballot on Thursday.
With this defeat, members-elect are expected to participate in another vote, and they will continue to do so until a nominee reaches a majority. There have been seven ballots in three days as of press time.
Nineteen of the 20 GOP defectors voted for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL). In a first since ballots started Tuesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) cast his vote for former President Donald Trump. Gaetz was sitting next to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who appeared to be amused by his decision.
Progressive megadonor George Soros has ramped up donations to a group dedicated to packing the Supreme Court, signaling progressives' determination to reshape the judiciary even after a string of defeats.
Demand Justice raked in $4.5 million from Soros's Open Society Foundations to "support policy advocacy on court reform," 2021 fiscal year tax filings show. That's nearly double the $2.5 million Soros gave the group in 2018, when it formed to oppose Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation.
Soros's increased donations could buoy Demand Justice as the group fights to regain ground. The past two years saw the group suffer major setbacks, including the confirmation of two conservative justices and centrist Democrats' cooling on efforts to end the Senate filibuster and pack the Court.
Demand Justice does not seem willing to back down, an attitude that was signaled by the group's calls to intensify protests during the Court's last term as its conservative wing delivered historic victories on abortion and Second Amendment rights.

The January 6th Committee failed to mention 3 of the 4 Trump supporters who were killed by Capitol Police that day.
And they only mention Ashli Babbitt in their report in passing. They do not include any details on how the unarmed Trump supporter was shot dead in cold blood by Officer Mike Byrd without warning.
There are five mentions of Ashli Babbitt only to say she was killed that day.
Here is one from page 665:
“Members of Congress can be seen evacuating through the Speaker’s Lobby when a USCP officer fatally shot Ashli Babbitt at 2:44 p.m.”
The January 6 Committee of serial liars. They do not mention the most important detail – That four Trump supporters were killed by Capitol Police that day.
Two of the doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center treating Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin held a press conference Thursday to give an update on Hamlin’s health after the 24-year-old athlete went into cardiac arrest during an NFL game earlier this week.
Dr. Timothy A. Pritts and Dr. William Knight told reporters that Hamlin has shown “substantial improvement” in his recovery over the last couple of days.
The doctors said that Hamlin was able to move his hands and feet and was able to communicate through writing, but they said it was too early to know if he would make a full recovery.
“When he asked did we win, the answer is, yes, you know, Damar, you won, you’ve won the game of life,” Pritts said.
“We know that he’s home and that appears that all cylinders are firing within his brain,” Pritts said. “Which is greatly gratifying for all of us, for the nurses and respiratory therapists and caregivers as for his family and for everybody else beyond.”
When the doctors were asked about what caused Hamlin to go into cardiac arrest, they said that they do not know, but that answers could emerge in the future.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has allegedly called for a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine on Thursday.
The Russian Orthodox Bishop had urged Vladimir Putin to call a truce over Orthodox Christmas so that “Orthodox people can attend services on Christmas Eve and on the day of the Nativity of Christ.”
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has also backed the Bishop’s request in a call with Putin, urging the Russian president to also find a “vision for a fair solution.”
President Joe Biden said Thursday that he will visit the southern border Sunday.
The announcement came in a speech on illegal immigration, where Biden promised more border security and pushed for increased legal immigration.
Biden said he would visit the border in El Paso, where the mayor declared a state of emergency in December because of the thousands of migrants flowing through the city.
