"Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day. I really look with commiseration over the great body of my fellow citizens, who, reading newspapers, live and die in the belief that they have known something of what has been passing in the world." -- Thomas Jefferson

Lara Merchan, the wife of the judge presiding over former President Donald Trump’s “hush money” case in Manhattan, once worked for New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the massive $350 million civil fraud case against the former president, with the revelation reviving claims of bias and calls for the judge’s recusal.

Records reviewed by The Epoch Times show that Ms. Merchan worked for 21 years as a Special Assistant to the AG in New York, including three years under Ms. James. She changed jobs over two years ago.

Ms. James is a Democrat who fixated on President Trump as she campaigned for New York attorney general, calling him a “con man” and vowing to shine a “bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings.”

Is America as we know it over? Are we in the middle - or perhaps the end - of the transition from a national republic to a single-party regime that rules by fiat instead of law?

If we look at what’s happening to two, high-profile cases, the answer is less than comforting. It is becoming difficult to argue that the U.S. judicial system has not become a political arm of the Democratic Party.

The Left Waging Political Lawfare

Nations are either based on the rule of law or the rules dictated by the powerful. The former is meant to restrain, or better said, eliminate the possibility of the latter. But, as we’ve witnessed with the relentless political persecution of former President Donald Trump and, lately, of Elon Musk, laws only work when they’re fairly applied and enforced.

Seventy five years ago today – April 4, 1949 — foreign ministers of the United States, Canada, and 10 West European countries concluded the Treaty of Washington, creating what became the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The treaty committed U.S. (and Canadian) power and purpose to Western Europe to contain the Soviet Union. In the subsequent four decades, NATO was critical in ending the Cold War and Soviet suzerainty over Central and European Europe, and playing a role in the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Today the alliance has declared a new challenge, that of Vladimir Putin’s Russia and its encroachment from the East. Many observers and even some Western governments say Putin’s aggression in the 21st Century was inevitable: that he had always contrived to put the old Russian (Soviet) empire back together and to push Moscow’s influence Westward, perhaps even beyond Ukraine.

She began investigating the former president soon after taking office, eventually suing him for allegedly misleading banks and others about the value of his assets.

Ms. James eventually won the case on Feb. 16, with New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron ordering President Trump and Trump Organization executives to pay $350 million in damages, and barring the former president from doing business in the state for three years.

Judge Juan Merchan is presiding over a separate criminal trial involving President Trump in New York, in which the former president is accused of falsifying business records in order to conceal a $130,000 “hush money” payoff to an adult performer to stay quiet about their alleged affair.

President Trump on his Truth Social platform accused Judge Merchan of bias and corruption, while labeling the case against him “election interference” and also demanding the judge’s recusal.

The former president has also alleged that the judge’s daughter, Loren Merchan, has a partisan interest in the case because she leads a political marketing firm and has represented President Trump’s political opponents, receiving millions from them.

Claims of Conflict of Interest

Judge Merchan imposed a gag order against President Trump in the case and, on April 1, expanded it to include family members of the judge and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The judge wrote in the order that President Trump’s speech “injects fear in those assigned or called to participate in the proceedings that not only they, but their family members as well, as ‘fair game’ for Defendant’s vitriol.”

Laura Loomer, an independent journalist and popular conservative commentator who on social media shared records that Judge Merchan’s wife worked for Ms. James, wrote in a post on X that this fact represents “another major conflict of interest!”

Various conservative accounts reacted to Ms. Loomer’s post, arguing that the revelation adds to evidence that the judge should recuse himself from the case.

And this is why they expanded the gag order on Trump,” Paul A. Szypula, a popular conservative commentator on X with over 140,000 followers, said in a post. “It’s even more obvious how biased Judge Merchan is. He has to recuse himself now. There’s clearly at least an appearance of a conflict here. That’s enough in itself.”

Another popular account with over 46,000 followers called “The doppelgängers” argued in a post that, “everyone knows this is all connected and they are all connected to same sources to take down Trump.”

By contrast, Brian Krassenstein, a left-wing political commentator with a similar size following on X, pushed back on Ms. Loomer, saying the fact Judge Merchan’s wife once worked for Ms. James is not evidence of bias or conflict of interest.

“The New York State Attorney General’s office employs more than 700 Assistant Attorneys General. It’s not as if she was Letitia James’ right-hand woman,” he wrote in a post on X. “Literally 40% of all of the staff working in the Office of the AG in NY are ‘Special Assistants.’”

“Loomer is trying to somehow say that since the Judge in Trump’s Manhattan case was or is married to a woman who once worked in an office with 700 other people under the AG, who already won a civil suit against Trump, that Judge Merchan now has a conflict of interest,” he continued.Wife Of Judge In Trump 'Hush Money' Trial Worked For AG Letitia James

The Israeli airforce struck a convoy of aid workers overnight on Tuesday in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, killing seven members of the US-based World Central Kitchen charity.

The “team was traveling in a deconflicted zone in two armored cars branded with the WCK logo and a soft skin vehicle,” WCK said.

Local media circulated footage depicting the aftermath of the strike on the vehicle. The footage reveals a hole from the missile impact piercing through a large banner affixed to the roof, prominently displaying the organization’s name and logo for identification.

Authored by Charles Hugh Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

The harder the authorities and pundits push the "inflation is under control" narrative, the faster they erode public trust and confidence in the future value of labor and "money."

Image removed.

YOLO spending--grabbing what you can right now because You Only Live Once--is now embedded in the zeitgeist. The original narrative--that the pandemic shutdown awakened a broad cultural awareness of the fragility of life and security, and so it's wiser to buy experiences now rather than later--may be expanding into the complex realm of inflation and inflation expectations.

Covid changed how we spend: More YOLO splurging but less saving

The possibility that the human herd senses trend changes before statistics and the economic punditry comes under the capacious category of the wisdom of crowds: in this line of thinking, YOLO spending may be a reflection not just of a pandemic-instigated change of priorities, but of a growing sense that inflation is now embedded, and so it's better to spend earnings now before they lose value.

This is the core behavioral response to embedded inflation: borrow and spend now, as savings will only lose purchasing power as time goes on. In hyper-inflationary economies, this leads to wage earners finding something to buy the day they're paid, as their wages will lose value literally overnight.

Put another way, embedded inflation is systemic financial insecurity: the future value of labor and savings is unknown and unknowable, and could be much lower than we expect. To trust that labor and "money" will retain their current purchasing power is a fool's game, as the crowd intuitively grasps the runaway-feedback nature of inflation: once it gets going, every increase in inflation fuels further increases.

Once this feedback is embedded in our expectations, it becomes extremely difficult to rebuild trust in future valuations of labor and "money." In other words, there is a psychological element in inflation that is completely real and completely outside actual material causes of inflation such as scarcity and the relentless expansion of the money supply / credit.

Once expectations of inflation become embedded, enterprises raise prices and workers demand higher wages regardless of actual inflationary pressures. The gaslighting manipulation of inflation statistics pours gasoline on the fire of the expectations of inflation, as being told costs only rose 2% when we know they rose 20% destroys confidence in official assurances that "inflation is falling."

The human herd also intuits that prices never fall back to pre-inflationary-spiral levels. If inflation moderates after a 20% spike, costs across the entire spectrum don't drop 20%; they simply rise at a slower pace.

Unlike a direct tax, inflation's indirect tax is difficult to calculate. Income and sales taxes are visible and can be estimated / calculated. The indirect tax of inflation is inherently difficult to estimate, as costs rise at different rates across goods and services, some are stickier than others, etc.

The ravages wrought by future inflation are known unknowns: we know inflation is built into our debt-based economy, but we have no way of knowing its future impact.

The safest approach is to spend cash now before it loses more value. This insecurity feeds back into our confidence in the entire economic status quo: our confidence in our future earnings and job security also decays, strengthening the impetus to spend now because we understand we might not be able to afford the travel, experiences, etc. in the future.

To the authorities and pundits tasked with gaslighting inflation to limit inflationary expectations, the wisdom of crowds looks like the madness of crowds: with trust and confidence in the future value of labor and "money" both declining, the sense of insecurity increases, generating demands for higher wages and prices now rather than later. This feedback loop generates its own inflationary pressure, which then feeds back into itself as everyone grasps the potential for an inflationary spiral that gets out of control.

To the authorities and pundits tasked with reassuring us that inflation is receding, this mob-generated expansion of inflationary feedback is madness. If only everyone believed us that inflation was near-zero, inflation would be near-zero. This is the end result of the idea that if we control expectations, beliefs and perceptions, we can control the real-world economy.

The problem with this idea is all the efforts to control the narrative generate their own feedback: a loss of trust and confidence in the system and its statistics.

The University of Texas at Austin has been forced to lay off 60 employees focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) following the passage of Senate Bill 17 earlier this year.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that after State Sen. Brandon Creighton warned Texas universities about the state’s expectations for higher education institutions to comply with the new law, the University of Texas has made a brutal series of layoffs:

UT has not confirmed to the American-Statesman the number of staff positions that have been eliminated or how many employees will be laid off, but on Tuesday afternoon, a person with knowledge of the terminations said at least 60 people have lost their jobs, 40 of them in the Division of Campus and Community Engagement alone. The layoffs are effective in 90 days or more, people familiar with the terminations told the Statesman. UT did not respond to a Statesman request for comment.

The lead ship in a new class of guided-missile frigates for the U.S. Navy may be up to three years late, USNI News has learned.
Constellation (FFG-62), under construction at Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Wisconsin, may not deliver to the fleet until 2029, three years later than the original 2026 delivery goal, according to a service shipbuilding review.

The program’s delay came to light as part of the 45-day shipbuilding review that Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro ordered earlier this year. In addition to the frigate delay, the Navy confirmed delays in delivering aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVN-80), the lead boat for the Columbia-class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, and the Virginia-class attack boats.

In a one-page summary of the review, the service cited lead ship problems like design maturation, supply chain issues, and difficulty finding skilled workers as factors in the program delays.

The Biden administration has finalized its move to slash Medicare Advantage as the 46th president has claimed former President Donald Trump seeks to slash entitlement programs.

The Biden administration on Monday will cut base payments for Medicare Advantage plans by an average of .16 percent despite pressure from Republicans and healthcare experts. This follows Biden making controversial moves in the risk adjusting coding system to allegedly make Medicare Advantage payments more accurate.

Biden’s move would impact more than half of Medicare enrollees, as many American seniors now look to Medicare Advantage for their healthcare needs. American seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage could see their supplemental benefits reduced or cost-sharing increased by $33 a month in 2025, according to experts.

Chris Meekins, an analyst, said, “President Biden’s team is gambling that MA beneficiaries won’t realize before the election the benefits Biden’s team is causing them to lose come January 2025.”

Biden’s move to slash Medicare Advantage comes as Trump told Breitbart News he will never touch Social Security or Medicare. This runs contrary to claims from Biden and Democrats that he would cut entitlement programs.

Claire's Observations:  Of course, Biden is doing this; he's running out of money for the care and feeding of illegal aliens, who don't deserve a penny of monies originally set aside to help our more "seasoned citizens" in their "golden years" hang on to their health.

On Monday, Iran said that Israeli warplanes struck the Iranian embassy in Syria, killing seven military advisers, including two generals. On Tuesday, Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed revenge.

As the US and its allies have continuously allowed Israel to "cross all red lines" in the past, it should be no surprise that it attacked an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Dr. Seyed Mohammad Marandi told Sputnik’s The Critical Hour on Tuesday.

“The Israeli regime is only able to carry out these attacks because the United States, the Europeans, the Canadians, the British, the Australians allow them to cross all red lines. When they’re allowed to commit a genocide, when they’re allowed to carry out a Holocaust, in the words of the president of Brazil, then, obviously, attacking an embassy shouldn’t be unexpected.”

The diamond industry is vital to the Israeli occupation's economy since diamonds are Israel's biggest export product.

In fact, the Zionist entity ranks in the top five countries in the world for diamond exports, despite Israel not having a single diamond mine; so where does Israel get its diamonds? And how does this industry contribute to Palestinian dispossession?

The diamond industry in Israel goes back to before the Nakba in 1948. Israeli diamond tycoons have long been involved in exploiting resource rich African countries.

Extracting their rough diamonds in corrupt deals, the diamonds are then sent to the Zionist entity where they are cut and polished before being sold to markets in Europe, the United States, and Hong Kong and beyond.

Dan Gertler, who has become a billionaire through his deals in the Congo, is one of the most prolific and notorious Israeli diamond tycoons. Gertler comes from one of Israel's long established diamond families. His grandfather, Moshe Schnitzer, was a founding member and the first president of the Israel Diamond Exchange in 1947.

From the remove of my relatively safe suburban town, I’ve watched the demise of my once-beloved New York City with a combination of horror and bemusement. Its descent into third-world s**thole status was foreseeable, but it’s still sad. And while the erstwhile greatest city on Earth has phoenixed itself from the ashes more than once, it seems ever more likely that perhaps the damage is too devastating to recover from this time.

On Sunday, Michael Stuhlbarg, a fairly well-known actor, was taking in the evening air on the Upper East Side near Central Park when a troglodyte whacked him in the back of the neck with a rock. (A varying report says the Neanderthal flung the rock in the actor’s direction.) Stuhlbarg chased his assailant until police were able to arrest 27-year-old Xavier Israel, a homeless man who — all together now — has been arrested before, including for assault and robbery.

Stuhlbarg refused treatment at the scene. Opening Night of his new Broadway play “Patriots” was scheduled for the following evening, so he probably didn’t have time for the NYC emergency department rigamarole. Israel, who was out on parole, was charged with assault and harassment and — shockingly — held on $50,000 cash bail — at least, as of this writing.

Mere hours after the rock attack, a woman who was minding her own business in Midtown was whacked in the back. No mere rock was good enough for her attacker though; he had a hammer with him, presumably in case the opportunity arose to batter someone.

Although President Joe Biden claims to be against the mass killing of Gazans, his administration has provided Israel with most of the weapons that are being used in the war there.

According to the Washington Post, the Biden administration has “quietly approved and delivered more than 100 separate foreign military sales to Israel” since the beginning of the conflict that was spurred by the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas. Among the shipments were thousands of small arms, small-diameter bombs, precision-guided munitions, bunker busters and other lethal weapons.

However, just two of those sales have been publicly reported: $147.5 million worth of components used for making 155mm shells and $106 million in tank ammunition. The others slipped under the radar because their amounts were below the minimum required for the White House to notify Congress.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has begun to take defensive measures in anticipation of a direct Iranian strike against Israeli territory in response to the April 1 Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

At least 13 people were killed in the strike in which, according to Tehran’s ambassador, Israeli F-35 stealth fighter jets fired six missiles that leveled the five-story consular building adjacent to the embassy.

The attack claimed the lives of seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including two senior commanders of the Quds Force, Brigadier Generals Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi.

Iran’s top officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi, vowed a harsh response to the Israeli attack.

On April 3, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the country was on high alert for a potential Iranian response to the attack in Syria and that a retaliatory strike originating from Iranian territory -as opposed to from one of its proxies- would require a more significant IDF response.

Did you know there was a mass shooting in Indianapolis over the weekend? I briefly saw it on a news crawl, but didn’t hear another word about it, so, by Monday, I assumed I had dreamt it.

Nope. There was a real mass shooting, sending seven kids aged 12 to 17 to the hospital, one in critical condition. The gunfire came from a group of juveniles gathered outside a shopping mall in downtown Indianapolis Saturday night.

The New York Times didn’t report the shooting, which I found odd, because the gunmen were almost certainly black, meaning it was the gun’s fault.

I say "almost certainly black" because kids as young as 12 were out on a downtown city street, unsupervised, at 11:36 p.m. the night before Easter; a Google search of "Indianapolis mugshots shootings" looks like Gemini’s artificial intelligence version of a “Founding Father”; and also—the Times didn’t mention it.

For years Russia was handicapped by its pro-Western intellectuals, but the West’s demonization of Russia has forced them to change their spots or to leave. Free of the former influence of these Russian traitors, everyone of whom Stalin or Lenin would have shot, Russia has emerged as the leader of the world majority that is tired of Western bullying.

The fools in Washington, instead of undermining Russia in the interest of US hegemony, have created their replacement by Russia as world leader.

Have we reached peak DEI stupidity?

Yes, we are well past the peak. As we explained in early March, "Both the DEI and ESG gravy trains on Wall Street are finally coming to an unceremonious end."

The unraveling of "diversity, equity, and inclusion" initiatives was seen on the state level, as Red states rushed to ban DEI programs in 2023. Google, Facebook, and other tech companies slashed DEI staff by late last year. Early this year, universities began rolling back diversity programs, while Harvard President Claudine Gay was demoted.

DEI was doomed to fail, and corporations have been quickly scrambling to abandon mindless and profitless diversity programs with Marxist roots. The latest earnings call data shows that "DEI" mentions have collapsed from their peak in 2021, according to Axios, citing data from AlphaSense.
