Germany is considering introducing conscription for all 18-year-olds, as it looks to boost its troop numbers in the face of Russian military aggression.

Military planners in Berlin are in the final stages of discussing three options, two of which involve a form of conscription, according to leaked plans reported in the German media.

Boris Pistorius, the defence minister, is set to go public with the official plans by June.

In one of the options being discussed, Germany would bring back a compulsory military year for young men once they turn 18, which was suspended in 2011, and apply it to women as well. This would require a change to the German constitution, but is seen inside the ministry as most likely to receive societal approval.

Another option would only apply to 18-year-old men, but would not see everyone selected.

Israel and Hezbollah carried out tit-for-tat airstrikes throughout Wednesday. Scores of Hezbollah missiles were fired at northern Israel and a drone strike against a military site near Golani Junction hit some 21 miles from the border.

Israeli military reported damage but no injuries from the explosives-laden drone, but more noteworthy is the fact this is the deepest strike into Israeli territory since the current war began in October.

Most Hezbollah strikes against Israel have been to within 9.3 miles of the border. Showing a capacity to strike this much deeper into Israel means many sites, previously thought relatively safe, are within range of attack.

Israel responded to the drone strike with several strikes into northeastern Lebanon, hitting the towns of Nabi Chit and Brital in the Bekaa Valley. This too was a very deep strike, some 51 miles from the border itself.

Israel commonly attacks targets in and around the city of Baalbek in the northeast. The area, not far from the Syria-Lebanon border, is seen as having an active Hezbollah presence with an eye toward smuggling arms into the country.

CNN data analyst Harry Enten threw a snide remark at President Joe Biden this week after he rejected polls that show former President Donald Trump leading him in polls in several battleground states.

During an interview last week, Biden had told CNN host Erin Burnett, “The polling data has been wrong all along. You guys do a poll at CNN. How many folks you have to call to get one response?”

In response to Biden’s remarks during a conversation with Enten, Burnett said, “He doesn’t like the polls. Is he right or is it wishful thinking?”

Enten then said, “He loved the polls four years ago when they showed him ahead. These are the same polls now.”

Despite the subtle mockery of Biden, Enten noted that polls can see a drastic change before the November election.
