ANALYSIS | 04/05/2024 08:03:47 GMT

Risk appetite got a hit yesterday as an army of Federal Reserve (Fed) speakers sounded cautious about the timing of the first rate cut and as the barrel of Brent spiked past the $90pb level on rising tensions between Iran and Israel after Israel bombed the Iranian embassy in Damascus earlier this week.

The latest spike in oil prices will be reflected in the upcoming inflation reads and may derail the Fed from its ‘three rate cuts’ plan for this year.

Today, all eyes are on the US jobs data, that should distinguish between those expecting that the Fed will cut interest rates three times this year and those who bet that the Fed will barely cut the rates with strong growth and rising inflation. Another higher-than-expected NFP and hotter-than-expected wages growth could lead to a further pullback in dovish Fed expectations, weigh on stock and bond valuations and boost the US dollar.

Elsewhere, the European Central Bank (ECB) minutes hint at upcoming rate cut, while falling Swiss inflation backs further Swiss National Bank (SNB) easing, convincing carry traders to move from the yen to Swiss francs for funding their trades.

Update(1831ET): With Israel's embassies around the world on a heightened state of alert, and extra IDF reservists called up, and home and weekend leave for all combat troops having been abruptly canceled Thursday, the Israeli population is anxiously awaiting a response - with some reports saying residents are already seeking the safety of bomb shelters.

Tehran has vowed that vengeance is coming soon for the Monday Israeli airstrike on its embassy in Damascus. Most pundits believe this will take the form of ballistic missiles raining down on Israeli cities. But Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly vowing that if the Islamic Republic launches missiles from its soil it will ensure "a strong response" from Israel.

Israeli officials have told Axios late in the day that such an act would "take the current conflict to another level" — which most certainly would involve a direct Israel-Iran war and thus the eruption of a broader regional conflict. Axios adds the following observations:

  • Iranian proxies in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Gaza have attacked Israel but there hasn't been an attack from Iranian soil.
  • A direct Iranian strike on Israel would be unprecedented and could lead to a regional war in the Middle East.

Netanyahu informed his security cabinet Thursday that Israel's forces have already been engaged with Iran "both directly and via its proxies, and therefore Israel is operating against Iran and its proxies, both defensively and offensively."

A statement issued by the prime minister's office laid out: "We will know how to defend ourselves and will operate according to the basic principle of whoever is harming or planning to harm us — we will harm him." The White House has meanwhile issued a statement shortly after Biden and Netanyahu discussed the Gaza crisis, saying "President Biden made clear that the United States strongly supports Israel in the face of those [Iranian] threats."

There have meanwhile been unverified reports to emerge saying that the CIA has warned Israel to expect an attack from Iran within the next 48 hours, which has also been picked up in Israeli press.

Massive retrospective alterations have been made to surface air temperatures by GISS, one of the main global databases run by the U.S. space agency NASA. Professor Ole Humlum has discovered that in the period January 1915 to January 2000, GISS changed past warming from 0.45°C to 0.67°C. This was a massive increase of 49%, which meant that almost half of the apparent warming in most of the 20th century was due to administrative changes made years after the initial measurements. On such evidence is the need for a global Net Zero collectivisation being promoted.

A study published in the Nature Portfolio Journal warns that Australia’s soil is becoming a net carbon emitter and threatens to ruin the country’s net zero goals. “They claim that over the next 80 years, Australian soil … will release up to 100 megatons of CO2 into the atmosphere,” Sky News host James Macpherson said. “There you have it … dirt is now a major threat to the future of planet Earth. “I reckon some greenie councillor is going to make you concrete everything now that they know dirt is a climate criminal.”

Secretary of State Tony Blinken says that Ukraine will be joining NATO. Ukraine is a corrupt, non-democratic, authoritarian republic known as the most corrupt country in Europe. Under Article 5, this means that an attack on Ukraine will be considered an attack on the United States. As David Sachs says, “If you want nuclear war, vote Joe Biden in November.”
