"Political parties exist to secure responsible government and to execute the will of the people. From these great staffs, both of the old parties have ganged aside. Instead of instruments to promote the general welfare they have become the tools of corrupt interests which use them in martialling [sic] to serve their selfish purposes. Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people." -- Theodore Roosevelt

The Biden administration has started chartering helicopters to evacuate Americans wanting to leave Haiti as gang violence continues to spread and the death toll rises.

Up to 1,600 U.S. citizens have asked the State Department for help with the airport closed and the carnage spreading to upscale neighborhoods around the capital Port-au-Prince.

Armed gangs have launched attacks on suburbs and bodies have been left in the streets as a result of heavy gunfire.

People in communities under fire called radio stations pleading for help from Haiti's national police force, which is outnumbered by the gangs.

Citizens dealing with the barbarity on the streets first hand have carried wooden coffins across roads strewn with debris and fires.

President Joe Biden announced even more student loan forgiveness on Thursday that will see 78,000 public service workers have their education debt wiped clean.

The nearly $6 billion in student loan relief applies to teachers, nurses and firefighters who, due to previous failures with the system, did not receive the forgiveness they were promised for going into public service.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) was created in 2007 and aimed to forgive student debt for Americans who entered jobs in public service – but most never received their promised relief.

Webmaster addition:  Biden is trying to buy the students' votes.

Three cybersecurity researchers discovered close to 19 million plaintext passwords exposed on the public internet by misconfigured instances of Firebase, a Google platform for hosting databases, cloud computing, and app development. The trio scanned more than five million domains and found 916 websites from organizations that either had no security rules enabled or had set them up incorrectly. More than 125 million sensitive user records were found, including emails, names, passwords, phone numbers, and billing information with bank details.

Canada has not approved new arms export permits to Israel since Jan. 8 and the freeze will continue until Ottawa can ensure the weapons are used in accordance with Canadian law, the government said on Wednesday.

Export permits that were approved before Jan. 8 remain in effect, the office of Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in an emailed statement.

The political survival of Canada's minority Liberal government depends on support from the left-leaning New Democrats, who are calling for a tougher line with Israel over the Gaza conflict.

U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake has made another legal move in her effort to have electronic vote tabulating machines banned in Arizona by filing a petition for certiorari with the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday along with 2022 Secretary of State candidate Mark Finchem, who is now running for a state Senate seat.

The pair “filed a 210-page petition with the nation’s top court last week, asking it to consider their case. The duo challenges the use of electronic machines that count votes, alleging they are hackable and not properly tested,” USA Today reported.

Julian Assange is said to be in talks with the Department of Justice to plead guilty to a lesser offense and avoid extradition to the US, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Unnamed sources cited by the Journal on Wednesday say the guilty plea would apply to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information.

The five years he has spent at Belmarsh Prison in the UK would count as time served, the sources said, and Assange would likely be freed shortly after the deal was finalized.

Such a deal is yet to be approved, and would require the highest levels of approval in the DoJ.

US firm TerraPower has thrown its hat into the ring of the global nuclear energy market in competition with Russia and China.

The company claims its Natrium sodium-cooled fast reactors are safer, cheaper and more energy efficient than water-cooled power plants.

Belonging to the class of small modular reactors (SMRs), Natrium is reportedly capable of producing 345 megawatts (MW) and could be boosted to 500 MW for over five-and-a-half hours if needed.

Webmaster addition: There are some serious problems using Sodium as a coolant. Sodium is a solid below 208 degrees F and must be kept hot even when the reactor is not running, or else the reactor is ruined. If the sodium comes into contact with air it spontaneously combusts and if it is allowed to come into contact with water it will explode!  There was a very nasty accident at a test reactor in Scotland, and the US Navy's Seawolf submarine was initially built with a sodium cooled reactor, but has since replaced it with a more conventional water system.

Over the past several years, the cost of living has been rising significantly faster than paychecks have. As a result, U.S. consumers have reached a breaking point. Delinquency rates are spiking and bankruptcies have risen to a very dangerous level. I have been hearing from so many people that are struggling to survive in this suffocating economic environment. It has become increasingly difficult just to pay for the basics, and so many Americans have very little or no discretionary income to spend these days. If you want evidence that this is having a major economic impact, just consider the fact that 1,000 dollar stores are going to be shut down. If U.S. consumers were in good shape, that wouldn’t be happening.

Russia's Defense Ministry has released footage of special forces scouts inspecting a knocked out Ukrainian Abrams abandoned in no man’s land in the settlement of Berdychi, about 3 km northeast of Avdeyevka. Sputnik asked veteran military observer Alexey Leonkov what Russia could get out inspecting the vaunted American main battle tank more closely.

Battlegroup Tsentr scouts have completed a risky operation to inspect a damaged Abrams MBT, collecting evidence for analysis by command.

“The mission was to inspect the tank to determine whether it was intact, whether or not it had burned up, to determine its weaponry and equipment. Everything that could be captured to the maximum possible extent,” a sapper scout with the call sign "Leshy," who was involved in the operation, told Sputnik.

NATO’s European members have poured tens of billions of euros-worth of weaponry and ammunition into Ukraine to fuel a US-led proxy war against Russia, with little to show for it besides economic crises and soaring budget deficits at home and the loss of their cheapest and most dependable source of energy.

The Western alliance’s European members would have to shell out an additional €56 billion (US$60.8 billion) in cash to meet NATO’s 2 percent of GDP defense spending target, according to research by Germany’s ifo Institute.

The Munich-based think tank has found that many of NATO’s biggest spending loafers are drowning in domestic debt topping 100 percent of GDP, and posting record budget deficits amid the economic crunch pummeling the Eurozone. Germany, for example, expects its budget deficit to hit €17 billion ($18.45 billion) in 2024, with Spain, Italy and Belgium following suit with €11 billion, €10.8 billion and €4.6 billion ($11.94 billion, $11.73 billion and $4.99 billion), respectively. Rome expects its 7.2 percent deficit to raise interest costs for government borrowing to a whopping 9 percent of all revenues this year.

By 2100 this could even rise to 97 per cent of all nations, following current trends. Researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) warned the global fertility rate - the number of children born per woman - is plummeting, leaving the world at risk of economic collapse. The problem is particularly acute in wealthy nations. In the UK, the birth rate is predicted to fall to 1.3 children per woman of childbearing age by 2100, well below the replacement level of 2.1 children - the number each woman would need to have, on average, to replace both parents.

Anonymous, a decentralized international hacktivist group known for cyberattacks against governments, claims to have infiltrated computers controlling Israel's nuclear infrastructure in the southern town of Dimona and stealing documents,

"First step of our operations was successful," they wrote. "As we promised before This operations was high risk but as we are not as like as the bloodthirsty Netanyahu and his terrorist army we carried out the operation in such a way that no civilians were harmed. We have targeted some servers of the baby killer regime's nuclear organisations. In this operation, while wiping and destroying the data, we saved a part of it which includes 7GB data that we will disclose to the people of the world."

Yemen's Houthis have claimed responsibility for a cruise missile launched from the Red Sea which landed near Eilat, in what marks the first time a projectile fired from the Iranian-backed group has struck Israel's territory.

The Iran-aligned militants have repeatedly launched drones and missiles at international commercial shipping in the region since November, in what they say is in solidarity with Palestinians against Israel's military assault in Gaza.

Previously, missiles and drones fired from Yemen had hit neighboring countries or were intercepted by air defenses.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Tuesday it had tracked a "suspicious aerial target" which it confirmed was a cruise missile, The Times of Israel reported. No damage or injuries were caused and Newsweek has contacted the IDF for comment.

Taiwan has officially confirmed the presence of US troops stationed on its islands in the Taiwan Strait permanently, a development that could further escalate mounting tensions with China.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed in 2023 facilitated the deployment of these troops to conduct training programs for Taiwanese frontline forces.

The move comes as China continues to assert its disputed claim over Taiwan, viewing it as a renegade province despite never having ruled it. The heightened military activities by China in and around the Taiwan Strait have prompted Taiwan to bolster its defense capabilities.

President Trump just notched a legal win that may shed some light on the bizarre decision made by the judge in the Big Fani dismissal case. In a moment that felt suggestive in a “wink and a nod” kind of way, Judge McAfee not only granted Trump a substantial triumph but also opened the door for rectifying his own unjust ruling by approving Trump’s appeal request in Georgia. It appears as if McAfee wanted to wash his hands clean and defer to a higher court, almost as if he was encouraging Trump’s team to seek an appeal and give Big Fani the bum rush right out the door.

45 years after the United States withdrew its forces from Taiwan following the normalization of diplomatic relations with China, it is now revealed that the ‘Green Beret’ forces are permanently stationed on islands in the Taiwan Strait near the Chinese border.

Taiwanese Defense Chief Chiu Kuo-cheng officially confirmed it when asked about the presence of the US Army Special Forces.

This revelation has the potential to escalate tensions with China.
