The latest crude oil purchase that the Department of Energy made as part of refill plans for the strategic petroleum reserve cost an average of over $81 per barrel, exceeding the $79 ceiling set by the federal government.

Per an Argus report, the DoE declined to comment on why it had bought the oil despite the higher price hinting at more news to come later today.

Back in 2022, to arrest an inexorable climb in retail fuel prices, the White House announced a release of 180 million barrels of crude oil from the strategic petroleum reserve. Critics warned the move would have a limited effect on prices but compromise the energy security of the country by reducing the level of crude in the SPR.

The final amount of oil released from the SPR ended up exceeding 180 million barrels with the DoE pledging to replenish the reserve in a timely fashion but only when prices were favorable. The SPR is currently close to a 40-year low as a result of the massive release.

The replenishing effort has been going on slowly, with three million barrels bought there and another three bought here as the very news of a planned purchase led to an uptick in prices

Ted Snider asks:

Is America a Rogue Superpower?

“Unipolar” used to mean that the United States was, at least in theory, alone in leading the world. Now “unipolar” means that the United States is alone and isolated in opposition to the world.

Snider refers to the recent UN Security Council resolution 2728 which "demands" a ceasefire in Gaza and "demands" a release of hostages and "demands" the unhindered supply of food and other items to Gaza.

The U.S. has claimed, falsely, that the resolution is not binding.

As Snider writes:

On March 25, the U.S. went one step further and took a step toward becoming a rogue state who has supplanted international law with its rules-based order. International law is grounded in the charter system and the United Nations and is universally applicable. The rules-based order is composed of unwritten laws whose source, consent, and legitimacy are unknown. To the global majority, those unwritten laws have the appearance of being invoked when they benefit the U.S. and its partners and not being invoked when they don’t.

On March 25, the Security Council passed a resolution demanding “an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire.” The resolution was able to pass because the U.S. stood aside and let the other fourteen Security Council members pass it by abstaining instead of vetoing.

Palestinian banks could be cut off from the Israeli banking system starting next week following a decision by Israel’s finance minister to cease dealings between the two financial institutions, according to a report on Thursday by Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has two days to convene a cabinet meeting to discuss reversing plans by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to isolate Palestinian banks from both the Israeli and international banking systems.

Bank of Palestine ATM, via Associated Press

The Palestinian economy is based on the Israeli currency, the shekel, making it reliant on ties to Israel and its financial dealings with the rest of the world must go through the Bank of Israel and Israeli banks.

Earlier this month, the hardline minister Smotrich threatened to paralyze the Palestinian Authority's economy in response to the United States imposing sanctions on four West Bank extremist settlers accused of violence against Palestinians.

Israeli banks have heeded the sanctions despite calls by Smotrich not to comply. Two Israeli banks, Israel Discount Bank and Bank Hapoalim, currently maintain the connections of Palestinian banks with the banking system in Israel and globally

To protect them from lawsuits involving the Palestinian Authority for "transferring funds to terror groups", the Israeli government has been issuing a waiver of protection for the two banks on an annual basis, signed by the finance minister.

Smotrich is now refusing to renew the arrangement, which has been in place for years.  Without this protection, the PA will be stripped of immunity and the Israeli banks will be exposed to lawsuits and are expected to cut ties with Palestinian banks.

Claire's Observations:  The monied Palestinians, living far away from Gaza,  knew this was coming, and made appropriate arrangements; this will hit those who are among Gaza's poorest of the poor, who are barely making ends meet, if they have survived the Israeli genocide against them to date.

The United States stooped to outright rudeness by trying to publicly dictate to China what its government should do, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Izvestia in an interview.

"They got used to commanding others. They even resorted to outright rudeness by publicly dictating to China what it needs to do," the minister said.

Talk about Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s legitimacy may be moot after his term expires on May 20, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"As for the May 20 deadline and what will happen on May 21, let’s wait and see. Perhaps, we won’t need to recognize anything," he said in an interview with the Izvestia daily.

Lavrov also pointed to Zelensky’s decree banning him from holding talks with the Russian leadership. According to the top diplomat, Russian President Vladimir Putin "has made numerous statements on the matter, highlighting our readiness to engage in serious negotiations." "However, in order to make sure that this process is taken seriously or at least ensure that there is hope for it to be serious, he told Zelensky’s Western sponsors: let him first revoke the decree. This issue has been brought up before," Lavrov noted.

Moscow theater terrorists who killed 139 people and injured almost 200 others received their financial backing from Ukraine according to the ongoing investigation.  These funds and the funding mechanism could mean the US was involved.

Russia says they have arrested a suspect "involved in financing" the horrific attack that took place in Moscow last week.

The Russian Investigative Committee announced this afternoon that the suspects in last week’s attack were linked to Ukrainian nationalists, and had received “significant sums of money” from Ukraine.

Investigators have obtained “substantiated evidence” that the perpetrators of the attack received funding from Ukraine in the form of cryptocurrency, which was then used to prepare the attack.

Twenty-five years ago, the skies over Yugoslavia were ripped apart by relentless NATO bombing, scattering waves of contaminated dust infused with depleted uranium, a component found in armour-piercing munitions. However, it was the local civilians who suffered the brunt of the devastation, facing increased cancer-related deaths due to the toxic heavy metal.

“Bombs were raining down on Vranje. They were bombing non-stop. But not with conventional bombs! Instead of classical weapons, they used depleted uranium bombs,” recalls Gradimir, a survivor of NATO’s bombing in Serbia, his life forever marked by the scars of that tragic event.

For over three decades, the US Army has utilized depleted uranium shells in various conflicts, leaving behind a trail of devastation similar to that witnessed in Yugoslavia. The tragedy resounded tragically in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004, where Mouaid, among others, suffered unimaginable losses. “I’m one of the victims of the Americans. My eye is damaged. I also have traumas on my body, legs, and my back after the violent bombings. My brother and my niece died,” shares Mouaid.

Even in Italy, protests emerged from families of Italian soldiers who suffered as part of the ‘peacekeeping mission’ upon their return from Kosovo. Investigative journalists Jacopo Brogi and Alessandro Fanetti shed light on the concealed dangers of depleted uranium munitions, and the toll it exacted on soldiers deployed in conflict zones.

From the streets of Serbia to cemeteries in Iraq and Rome, this film serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of warfare and the pressing demand for accountability.

A controversy arose needlessly over the advisory issued by the American embassy in Moscow on March 7 to the effect that “extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts” and warning US citizens to “avoid large gatherings.” It took the form of a diplomatic spat and momentarily at least, the American claim that they shared the ‘information’ with the Russians hinted at the ineptness of the security agencies in Moscow while the latter hit back saying there was nothing specific or actionable that the Americans conveyed.

Clearly, Washington was in possession of some information which was at the very least credible enough in terms of its source but was not specific enough for Moscow. Interestingly, the UK embassy in Moscow also issued a similar advisory cautioning British citizens against visiting shopping centres. The US and British intelligence agencies work in tandem.

Why is it that the EU and the US are so adamant about who is behind the Crocus Concert Hall atrocity, that they will not wait out the investigation? Within 55 minutes of the attack, the US spokesperson said ‘Ukraine wasn’t involved’. Now the US is saying – definitively - that only ISIS was involved.

“No concrete advance warning - nothing was transferred to us”, Russia’s Washington Ambassador insists.

Why are Western states so certain?  It is most unusual for Intelligence services to pronounce within the hour. Though the actual perpetrators are now known, the key question remains: Who stands behind the attack? Things are not always as they seem.

At the moment, there is insufficient evidence to say -- let alone with absolute certainty -- that the attack committed in Moscow was planned, prepared and executed to some Islamic State master-plan.

The rift between the US and the British special services is growing, over the recent series of “Ukrainian” attacks on oil infrastructure in Russia.

Over the past months, the US leadership has repeatedly sent signals to its Ukrainian “partners” that it would be unhappy to see strikes on oil refineries inside Russia. These signals were silently ignored or even publicly rejected by Kyiv.

Most recent media reports suggest that these attacks are likely to become more common in the near future. There are reports that MI6 personnel have held a series of meetings with their little brothers from the SBU and the Main Directorate of Intelligence in Kyiv. These meetings were allegedly dedicated to the development of long-standing strategy and tactical plans for a campaign of attacks on oil refineries in western and central Russia. It is expected that such attacks would include not only drone and missile strikes, but also sabotage acts involving the existing network of saboteurs inside Russia. The supposed goal is to create a local crisis in Russia shortly before the sowing season. This crisis may be furthered by a coordinated campaign of attacks on the Russian border, media disinformation, and staged protests carried out by agents loyal to Kyiv and London within the Russian “opposition”.

Children ages 2-5 who received the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine faced an increased risk of febrile seizures immediately following vaccination, according to a new study led by researchers at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The preprint study found children who received the Moderna shot were 2.5 times more likely to have a febrile seizure within a day of being vaccinated than they were to have one between eight and 63 days following vaccination.

The incidence rate ratio was “significantly elevated,” the researchers wrote, but the “absolute risk” — the risk of having a seizure following vaccination, was low within the first day following vaccination.

Is the long awaited - and overdue - restart of the American nuclear age finally here?

In a move which may force the lunatic greens to storm the White House, on Wednesday the federal government announced that it would provide a $1.5 billion loan to restart a nuclear power plant in southwestern Michigan. NJ-based Holtec International acquired the 800-megawatt Palisades plant in 2022 with plans to dismantle it, but with support from the state of Michigan and the Biden administration, the emphasis has shifted to restarting the nuclear power plant by late 2025 instead.

What is remarkable is not that the US is throwing some money at a nuclear power plant - since the US sells $1 trillion in debt every 100 days, it may as well go full "Brewster's Millions" (or rather "Trillions") and spend it all asap; it is that this would be the first nuclear power plant to be reopened in the US, setting a precedent as atomic energy makes a triumphal comeback. Sure, it still faces hurdles, including inspections, testing and the blessing of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, but those are just formalities: watch as new NPPs start springing up across the country next.

“Nuclear power is our single largest source of carbon-free electricity, directly supporting 100,000 jobs across the country and hundreds of thousands more indirectly,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, a former Michigan governor, who in turn is repeating what nuclear advocates have been saying for decades. Restarting this particular plant will protect 600 union jobs and 1,100 throughout the community.

The Palisades plant is along Lake Michigan, a two-hour drive from Chicago. A Michigan utility, CMS Energy, owned it from 1971 until the plant was sold to Louisiana-based utility Entergy in 2007. It was shut down in 2022.

Crimean War was a conflict fought between 1853 and 1856, which pitted Russia against a coalition of states formed by Great Britain, France, the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia; The trigger for the war was control of the Balkan peninsula, the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The origins of the conflict must be identified in the great geopolitical upheaval triggered by the crisis of the Turkish empire, by Russia’s expansionist initiatives aimed at gaining access to the Mediterranean, and by the aspirations of France and Great Britain to exercise naval and land hegemony in the North African, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas.

Russia had taken advantage of the political and military weakness of the Ottoman Empire by settling in the Black Sea and exercising its influence throughout the Balkan area.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Russian pressure had led to victory in the war against Turkey of 1828-29 (see Russo-Turkish Wars) which ended with the treaty of Unkiàr-Skelessi (1833), with which Russia ensured control of the Bosphorus and imposed its presence in the region. France and Great Britain, alarmed by Russian expansion which they considered a threat to their interests in the Middle East and to the supremacy achieved over the seas, took a firm line against the Tsar; Austria also began to fear the Russian advance, which could clash with its ambitions in the Balkans.

The cause of the war was to be found in the possession of Palestine and therefore of the sacred places by the Orthodox and Catholics, at the time in possession of the Ottoman Empire.

President Joe Biden's appearance at a $25 million Radio City Music Hall fundraiser with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton descended into chaos as the trio of presidents being interviewed by Stephen Colbert got interrupted by protesters.

A handful of pro-Palestinian protesters shouted down the presidents, with one woman telling Biden 'you have blood on your hands,' as another loud guest warned of a nuclear war with Russia: 'you're out of your f***ing minds.'

The event was supposed to be a star-studded evening with major donors, with some tickets costing as much as $500,000.

Former President Donald Trump also traveled to New York Thursday, to pay his respects at a wake for slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller.

Colbert kicked the conversation off by noting how he was giving Obama and Clinton give minutes each to answer his questions - adding that Biden would get seven minutes.

Ethnic Russians are being targeted by nationalist governments in the Baltics, creating a potentially explosive dynamic.

Recent statements by French President and aspiring Emperor Emmanuel Macron have generated speculation the proxy war between Russia and the West could escalate to a new and dangerous phase.

To the consternation of other European leaders, Macron has repeatedly suggested France may send soldiers to the Donbass to avert the collapse of Ukraine’s diminished armed forces. Other countries would likely hesitate to join the French president in his quixotic endeavor, but analyst Scott Ritter speculates the increasingly anti-Russia Baltic States might be among the first to contribute troops.

Israeli troops shot dead two unarmed Palestinian men at close range in the Gaza Strip, then buried their bodies in sand and rubbish using a military bulldozer, video footage aired by Al Jazeera on March 27 has shown.

Before being shot, the two men were waving what appeared to be white fabric, in a sign of surrender and to show they were not armed.

According to Al Jazeera, the men were killed and buried close to the Nabulsi Roundabout, southwest of Gaza City. They were just trying to return to their homes in the north of the Strip via al-Rashid Street, the only possible route.
