                              CEC Improvements
in Track Accuracy, Continuity, and ID Consistency

                               Track Accuracy

Because radar resolution is inherently more accurate in range than
bearing, combing radar measurements from different angles through the
CEC composite tracking process increases track accuracy significantly.

                              Track Continuity

Because each radar suffers fades resulting from atmospherics, target
maneuvers, and ECM, a single ship loses detections on a target within
a zone. CEC combines radar measurements from different radars at
different frequencies to greatly increase track continuity by
maintaining detection as the target passes through the zones. [INLINE]

                               ID Consistency
     _________________________________________________________________

The CEC improvements in track accuracy and continuity provide greater
ID consistency in situations where no radar could have maintained a
single coherent picture. Typically, units observing this complex
dogfight independently, without CEC, would experience track drops,
forcing the search radars to reacquire and the operators to restart
the ID process, or track swaps, where the tracks emerge with incorrect
IDs, forcing the operators to detect the swap and assign the correct
   ID manually. [INLINE]

CEC composite tracking is able to maintain ID on both friendlies and
hostiles during close quarter maneuvers, allowing engagement of a
hostile in the immediate area of friendlies. USS Anzio is shown
conducting several local simulated engagements and providing data to
USS Cape St. George for a CEC remote simulated engagement of hostile
attackers during the All Services Combat Identification Evaluation
   exercise in September 1995.

Solid lines connect the firing ship with the targets; the dotted line
connects the ship providing data for a remote engagement with the
target. This scenario is representative of the complex air picture
encountered in the littoral environment, with friendly, neutral, and
   hostile aircraft in close proximity.
